A small detail that's bothering me and I still have no answer to this day is why WotC decided to make the bottom of the cards black. I think they hade more personality when the entire frame was colored and not just the top and sides.

When I first started Magic I used to be obsessed with Creature tribals, and making tribal themed decks. I used to think Lord creatures with "Give your tribe +1/+1 (and maybe an ability)" used to be the greatest shit ever. I feel sad that such a style of deck (with tribals and lords) is completely unplayable these days.

My guesses:

Monoblack decks of all varieties become more common because it's the one color without a set specific mechanic which means they will make the cards more powerful to compensate (white gets airbending, blue-waterbending, green-earthbending, red-firebending)

Control decks with white in them get bigger because of a one mana white spell with airbend (exile, cast for 2 more) on it

Blue artifacts might get bigger because they can convoke this card with an artifact

Technically many tribes are still playable in standard via generic lords and tribe-based lands, that is if you don't mind getting shut down by a billion 1-mana removal (Torch the Tower, Into the Flood Maw, Intimidation Tactics, Seam Rip etc.). Honestly, that's how I've felt about the game ever since FIRE ramped the fuck out of the power scale. Was a part of /ccg/ for a while, and prior to the FIRE sets there was a clear power level that all cards from the Weatherlight saga forward generally adhered to, and could be clearly used as precedent for what new cards would look like. Nowadays, every new set is pushed a little more than the last one (while the ones that aren't are regarded as weak), and the game is steadily degenerating into a power spiral where every card is a bomb that could decide the game if it isn't handled immediately.

I am trying to use MTG to teach some ESL (english second language) middle school students English. They're advanced compared to the other kids in their ESL class, so I need something simple for them. I used to play the game from 2008-2017 but I left my collection of cards back in my parents' house, very far away.

I haven't played the game aside from a couple matches on Arena last year, and I noticed that the sets have become waaaay more complex and there are multiple variants of each product from each set. Half of the sets being UB makes them even more expensive and complicated for a new player who doesn't speak English as a native language.

let me get to the point: what is the best set that is readily available with the most BASIC creatures? Core sets like m10 and m12 were perfect for my purposes, but they've been done away with for some reason.

Do shops still get sent starter decks from WOTC? I need some basics lands, creatures that are mostly vanilla with a couple keywords and some spells akin to LAva axe, Divination, doom blade, rampant growth, etc. There are a couple shops in the big city a few hours away and I heard they take ship out orders, but I still need to check them out in person. But their websites seem to only have the latest sets back to bloomburrow

Lorwyn is perpetually stuck in a summer afternoon. Elves are only dicks on Lorwyn. During the "Aurora", lorwyn becomes shadowmoor and every race flips into a dark, ugly inversion of itself. Shadowmoor also has more "ugly" fantasy creatures like Ouphes, Gwyllions, Bogles, and that weird half donkey thing. idk if they're explained in the books but you can imagine shadowmoor as more dark fantasy with a Jim Henson look.

Look through the card gallery for lorwyn and morningtide, take in the art and flavor text. then do the same for shadowmoor and eventide and you'll notice the difference.

Originally both where the same, a "third plane" that had aspects of boths but after Oona (queen of the Fae) came to be (she could be a planeswalker but it is never explicit said) she started to manipulate the plane as to separate the aspects further and then after a while the plane started to differentiate into 2 aspects: one full of sun and "happy vibes" (Lorwyn) and one with no sun and everything is figuratively dark(shadowmoor). Those two started to switch every couple of years to the point that some people would sometimes only experience one side of the plane in their lifetime but after Time Spiral fucked up the system that Oona established there started to crumble with Shadowmoor coming soon than expected. In that shift a couple of characters kept memories or didn't change at all (bridgit, sappling of colfenor, etc). Also Faeries apparently didn't change during the planeshifts because of their connection to Oona.

MTG language is not very good to use for ESL as it is extremely coded and many of the words within it are game jargon.

I'd honestly recommend a simple tabletop RPG like FUDGE, with a simple scenario where they can use the language creatively in a practical scenario, devoid of a specific game's jargon.

Also, MTG just fucking sucks noawadays. No better way to ruin someone's excitement for a language than to introduce it to them with a shit product.

It's really just bigger sets = more cards = more to sell. Aftermath had no target audience because it was un-draftable, the cards were shit (apart from, like, one random Human) and it had nothing really going on. Assassin's Creed 'met expectations', but it was always gonna not do great for the simple fact that people don't like smaller booster packs. Draftability is ancillary, but they know people like drafting and there's no reason to try and kill it.
