i figured that might happen, i was around for its first death and they didnt learn any of the old lessons. they're still trying to sell people the same shitty models no one wanted to buy 20 years ago, now competing with ever more impressive modern sculpts. they really should have taken the time and resources to fully update the ranges with new models instead of pressing out the old moulds.

also i'm just gonna say it. for as much as i like rank and flank, its god damn industrial grade new player repellant, which also isnt helped by the fact that most local warhammer fantasy groups look and act like the surly band of greasy outlaws at a card table that glares at the doors of the saloon when they swing open and a newcomer walks into town.

TOW was poorly executed. They could just being back 8e units that exist in AOS but refuse to leading to a loss of a lot of army diversity (for example Chaos specific cavalry). Perhaps a bit of generalising going on here. My local group has written an introduction to old world post for the club members (and anyone browsing the club page) who haven't seen the game before, one of the members has run a 500 point warbands-style intro day, another local group a couple of towns over is running a 1000 point intro tournament weekender soon. I can't speak for all groups but I can say I'm yet to find a single one that acts like your 'most groups' description.

>its god damn industrial grade new player repellant
Good imo. Think about the calibre of new player we've seen over the last 5 years in 40k and AoS. If rank and flank causes the 'modern audience' to pass on by then so be it, nothing of value has been lost etc

I did.

It felt very.... bland? Not lorewise but in terms of rules.
It feels bureaucratic but bland, overly regulated and privy of soul.

It's not a bad game by any stretch, but it's clearly designed for/by and casters to a very specific type of players that enjoy the competitive aspect of the gaming hobby.

But I'll always be impressed by the effort its community put into it. I'm kind of saddened that GW basically steamrolled the whf community that had finally just started its resurgence; of which 9th age was one of the results.

Have any of you ever made any significant house rules to change how WHFB plays to suit you and your group?

I find the lack of friction really dull, so I'm considering having a couple games of TOW with command rolls added in - same as morale tests, including proximity to general etc., but to activate instead. If you match your leadership or beat it by 1 you get to make 1 move, if you beat it by 2 you get to make 2 moves, and if you beat it by 3 or more you get to make 3 moves. Charging is included in these moves, rather than being a separate test.

>How do caledor's spells of dragon taming work?
The wiki says that TRVE dragonsong works because it contains the true names of the dragons of ulthuan, but only imrik and other dragons know it, and even then it wasn't an automatic process for imrik to have the dragons answer him.
Possibly caledor came to know that true dragonsongs and true names are the basis for how he came to bind dragons, but since the other wizards don't know true dragonsong maybe what they get to use is only an extremely diluted version, that maybe contains some parts of a dragon's equivalent of a surname.

I think there are enough instances of elves trying to tame an old world dragon, or a wyvern, and fail badly, so it certainly wouldn't work against cathayan dragons either.

Tomb Kings are fantasy Bronze Age Egyptians, and *profoundly* conservative. Cavalry didn't exist in Bronze Age Egypt (at all).

I don't think the size of horses was the main issue- they could've bred for size easily enough. I think it was a matter of breeding for the right temperament to where a horse would be ok with having another creature on its back in a combat situation (animals tend to not like that sort of thing). Psychological traits tend to be more difficult to select for (especially if there's no precedent for horseback riding to begin with).

There might also be an issue with it being easier to instruct horses to take direction if they're pulling a cart/chariot, rather than from horseback,l but I'm not familiar enough.

Stirrups were introduced to Europe in the early middle ages, heavy cavalry fought fine without them for centuries. Stirrups aren't seen until circa 400 AD (among steppe peoples), and take centuries longer to be adopted by many others, even if they'd been exposed to stirrups. The earliest evidence for cavalry (fighting men on horseback, rather than simple horseback riding) goes back to around 900 BC.

could be a few ways of doing it. one is you have to pass the command test in order to do what you want with the unit - if failed, they have to charge if within max charge range, and get the full 3 moves (perhaps more appropriate for frenzy). Maybe distinguish it from impetuous by saying that if they're within max charge range, they still get a free move towards the unit on a failed command roll.

>stupidity
hmm, potentially more difficult to find a solution for. perhaps roll 3D6 and pick the highest 2 results?

Stirrups didn't arrive in the west until the Dark Ages, Alexander's companions, Iranian cataphracts, and the famous Parthian horse archers didn't use stirrups. The issue was almost entirely due to smaller, weaker horses.

Thoughts? (not a challenge, actually curious on the topic)

Yes, Bronze Age horses were smaller than in the 1st millennium BC and later, but breeding bigger animals is simple, and people of the time would have known about selective breeding. You can still ride a small horse, it just might not work as well (though Mongolian ponies are surprisingly small).

Speaking for myself I've never had any interest in a pre-modern warfare (in style) skirmish game. When there's squad tactics, sure 10 guardsmen vs 5 eldar or whatever is fine, but the idea of knights and stuff at the skirmish scale feels boringly low stakes. The guardsmen and eldar can be part of a wider battle while skirmishing for whfb would just be raiding or witch hunters.

You're wrong. Even historical art shows much shorter and smaller horses as do contemporary descriptions. A full-sized horse from ancient Egypt was like 4.5-5 feet tall at the shoulder, essentially a modern pony. Even if they could have bred them larger is debateable. If your natural population tends towards a certain size breeding beyond the extremes of that size without inbreeding is difficult especially without causing other health problems, a dog with hip dysplasia will have a shittier life, a horse with hip dysplasia will collapse and cripple the person riding it.

As I said, I'm aware horses were smaller pre-1,000 BC; this is shown in art and in skeletal evidence. And, Mongolian horses are also small, but can carry riders just fine. We also have archaeological evidence for horseback riding on the steppe a couple millennia earlier, but not in a combat role.

Breeding for size can have complications, but is pretty straightforward, and animal husbandry was an established practice by the 3rd and 2nd millennium. If it wasn't an issue of temperament, then it might have to do with something anatomical- maybe not size, but a feature of skeletal or connective structure. Carrying a rider could have been hazardous to the horse until some minor anatomical trait was produced, which made riding more viable.

Well from top to bottom (top being most important, bottom being least) the Lore I usually go is as follows:

-Tabletop Rulebooks (Armybooks, AJ and such).
-White Dwarf articles (& other officially published magazine material).
-Warhammer Community articles.
-TOW website.
-Black Library books.
-WHRPG books.
-Video Games.
-My own fluff.
-Author's opinions. (usually found on Reddit or interviews).

There are some specific cases that might make me change the order of fluff-importance, like disagreeing with the retconing of some locations by TOW material (like the interative map), by this is my usual Lore order of preference.

>Have any of you ever made any significant house rules to change how WHFB plays to suit you and your group?
Most I've been considering is an army of infamy for Blood Dragons. Gist is
Part 1

>Choose either Brets or Imperials (essentially just the source of knights whether an actual fallen order (eg. the OG Blood Dragons) or just a knight in Bretonnia or the Empire who would end up turning knights from said region)

Characters
>No strigoi or necromancers
>Vampires must take armour (magical or otherwise)
>Vampires may take plate armour (Imperials only)

Special
>May take one unit of blood knights per vampire count equipped with heavy or plate armour (including magical armour specifically classed as heavy or plate armour)
>May not take corpse carts (necromancers) or crypt horrors (why let some ghoul gain a fraction of your power?)

Rare
>May not take Varghulfs or Vargeists (vampires exist to prove martial supremacy through skill, not mindless strength)

Unit specific
>Blood knights and Black knights may use the Bretonnian lance formation (Bretonnians only)
>Blood knights may not take full plate armour (Bretonnians only)
>Black knights may take full plate armour for 5 points per model (Imperials only)

Special rule
All vampire counts and thralls gain the "Martial Supremacy" special rule. They must issue and accept challenges unless a vampire with a higher leadership is involved in the combat (in which case they obviously must accept). Additionally if they kill an opponent's character in a challenge they gain 50 VPs, 100 VPs if it's the enemy general and if they're killed in a challenge the opponent gains 50 VPs, 100 if the slain vampire is the general.

part 2

Magic Items
Flag of Blood Keep (50 points): 4+ ward save against shooting
Bloody Hauberk (45 points): Plate armor that can be worn by a wizard and still cast spells, has a 5+ ward save

Special Characters
Walach Harkon: WS 9, 4 wound, 5 attack vampire lord with wizard level 2 on a nightmare. Has heavy armour and a shield with the "Crimson Blade" and "Blood Chalice" magical items and can cast spells despite wearing armour
>Crimson Blade is an AP -2 magical sword with killing blow, anyone who suffers an unsaved wound has -1 attack for the rest of the game to a minimum of 1
>the Blood Chalice can be used during the controlling player's strategy phase giving one of the following benefits
>>Recover 1 wound
>>Gain +1 attack until your next strategy phase
>>Crimson Blade gains multiple wounds (2) until next strategy phase

5e Walach was powerful, and even toned down I have no idea what to price him at. My best guess is about 410 points (vampire lord with curse of revanent, shield, nightmare, flayed hauberk, sword of kings, and healing potion being kind of vaguely similar if illegal)

As a whole I'm inclined to think it's a huge downgrade in competitiveness but better matches the theme. Going pure vampire focus your vampires are more martially oriented and you have access to a lot more blood knights (four units at 2000 points), and going more generally martial focus you can still take wights and thus have one unit of black knights or grave guard as core and can give black knights and grave guard plate armour or give black knights the lance formation. As for comparatively between the two army options I'd say they're largely equal, Brets get better offense through lance formation and Imperials get better defense through plate armour.

As far as general unit mix/composition is good for 1k, as far as money goes.
Maybe the only thing is the bolt thrower. I liked it in 7th ed, but in TOW I can't find a good use for it. I would drop that in favour of an Engineer (for shooting buffs) or Runesmith (for magic defence), if you know what armies your local opponent have.

For the crunch: drop some warriors to save points, you probably won't need the full third rank bonus. Get some great weapons on them with those points, it makes up for the lack of killing power of ironbreakers.
I generally support adding great weapons and shields to shooting units, like >>96404367 suggested, but at 1k it might be harder to fit.
Master Rune of Hesitation might be overkill at this level, unless you know you are facing heavy cavalry, chariots or similar.

And to scale up to 1500 points you don't need much more. Put the thane on the shield, add bodies to the shooting units, play around with runes.
Personal favourite: Engineer with handgun, Master Rune of Bursting Flame, Rune of Rapid fire (aka the bazooka) is an absolute threat.

It's not about the scale itself, I don't care about whether my personal battle is ten random guardsmen fighting eight random orks as opposed to Robute Guilliman and his personal guard fighting Abbadon the Despoiler and his elites, I care about the fact that it's part of a bigger battle. As far as I view it fantasy/medieval skirmish games a glorified gang shootout while in more modern technology style games its more comparable to a squad of Americans in WW2 securing a block occupied by Germans. It isn't individually very important but it feels like it's actually part of a war.

Even then a skirmish between forward elements involves dozens if not hundreds of soldiers in its own right and generally in some form of cohesive or organized manner. Therein lies the issue with premodern warfare (and fantasy even with its tanks and magic is premodern in style) soldiers fought in semi-rigid formations. Even if you had some forward elements fighting it would be a "block" of men not just ten guys scattered through a village fighting a dozen other guys scattered through a village.

However, was there ever a 5th ed knight kit with a joined metal body and legs, as you can see in picrel? The metal helmet isn't a mystery at all, it's the one found in the metal command kit for the 5th ed warriors, but I can't seem to find any pictures or evidence that there was a version of the knight kit with fused bodies and legs like this. Is this fella a recast? I also have a metal version of one of the helmets the plastic warrior kit had, which is even stranger.

Because that's not how premodern warfare works. Ratmen only fight in a scattered group for the sake of the game, it makes no sense otherwise for a random group of ratmen to be fighting as a scattered group. The battle of Agincourt didn't entail a dozen Englishmen scattered through a village and forest fighting half a dozen scattered French knights until perhaps the battle was decided.

They're not fighting as a block of men. In premodern warfare the smallest units were purely organizational, a contubernium or lance didn't split off from their primary unit under any circumstances short of a complete rout. The squad of Americans supporting each other is mostly accurate even if they might be spread too thin depending on the board. A lance or two of men scattered across a city block makes zero sense short of a complete collapse of order within the wider army in which case the men shouldn't be fighting as a unit, they should be sprinting away or sprinting after the men fleeing.

Good idea

>Is the lance formation worth losing plate armour on everything? I know it's not meant to be a competitively balanced thing, but maybe buff the Bretonnian horses or something
I would have guessed the opposite honestly since there's two banners to make units more survivable against shooting (improve regen and blood keep) amd the lance improves killing power a lot. Combined with more access to blood knights I was thinking the lance was the better option.

>What can the army take as core troops? Probably put blood knights or some kind of cheap thrall cavalry there
I didn't want to go overboard with blood knights. Pretty much just listed changes so they can take all troop choices unchanged.

>You don't need to repeat the heavy/plate armour bit in the blood knight entry. Per the earlier restriction, all vampire nobles will have it anyway
Fair enough

>Why the bloody hauberk when it's basically just the flayed hauberk 2.0?
I based it on the old rules for the Bloody Hauberk (6e I think) in a bit of irony the flayed hauberk rules from the same edition would actually a more unique choice (unimproveable 2+ save).

>Does Watch count as an Imperial vampire knight, can he dip into both types, or does taking him make you give up the benefits of a dedicated army?
Since he was the grandmaster of the Order of the Blood Dragon I'd make him Imperial.

As an aside for some actual unique units I had in mind if you think Bretonnia is weaker
>Hellsteed mount for vampire characters
>Hellsteed Knights (blood knights on hellsteeds)
Just blood knights on hellsteeds as a 0-1 rare choice

Just so you're aware, those are PVC, not "regular" plastic.

This means that regular plastic glue won't work.

I have tried assembling PVC miniatures with PVC glue (the one for pipes) and while it works; it's VERY messy. So you'll likely have to resort to superglue.
Superglue is fine on larger joints but on more fiddly bits... it's an absolute bitch.

So I suggest you use something line E6000 or E6000 premium (which are somehow very different adhesives).
Other than that AoW makes excellent sculpts and often have great prices (if you can, wait until black Friday to get their plastic kit at 40-50% off directly from them)

Loctite superglue gel is amazing for any and all joint sizes. It has a squeeze mechanism and nozzle combo that allows for fine control, and the glue doesn't run at all. I swear by it and always have a spare pack in case the one I'm using runs out, because I'll no longer use whatever alternative superglue my local shops have in stock.

Look at picrelated ( PVC from AoW) I used PVC pipe glue on the torso/legs and arms/shoulders connections and those are effectively welded together.
But for the hand to wrist connection of the standard bearers, I had to use superglue.

It'll hold, but accidents do happen (models being knocked over, parts getting tangled together) and superglue does tend to brittle up and brake with time.

This jade fleet AoI has me fairly convinced that GW has decided each AoI must be tied to a specific grand army, and that any units from another army must be mercenaries. Looking back, even stuff like the border prince list took militia as mercenaries. The jade fleet would've been cooler (and worked better as a marketing tool) if it were an empire AoI with cathayan mercenaries.

I'm kinda disappointed by that, since I wanted some really mixed AoI lists. Stuff like a Sigmar list with priests of Ulric buffing marauder barbarians, or a Deachefels/Sauron style "dark lord" list with various evil minions. I guess the rumoured Dogs of War list will show whether GW is willing to do something like that. Hopefully it at least brings back Prince Ulther and other named mercenaries.

I get what you mean about superglue going brittle. I do find that happens more with regular superglue where it's so thin that it kind of cracks like a sheet of ice. The loctite stuff is so thick that it acts more like a caulk that just happens to be superglue, which means you can completely fill gaps with it if you so wish, so it behaves more like concrete than ice. >Would you like to see a playable faction that's solely about the Hobgoblin Khanates?
Nah, for a couple of reasons.
I'm already tired of gw milking weird and wonderful little factions or army lists (vespids being a prime example, they're literally called auxiliaries but gw chose to make them a whole independent list when they have like 1 unit type).
Hobgoblins are auxiliaries to the chorfs and I'd prefer them to remain as such. There's already a standalone goblin faction, I don't think there's enough separation between goblins and hobgoblins to make them their own faction, unless you massively expand their roster with loads of new units that have never been seen anywhere in the fluff before and are so unique that they differentiate themselves from similar goblin units, which means the new units would have to be weird and wacky. As the other anon says also, there's already a nomadic waaagh list, which further reduces the uniqueness that hobgoblins could have.
So in summary, and speaking respectfully as a fellow hobgoblin enjoyer, no, some things are perfectly fine being left alone exactly as they are. The game doesn't have to have everything everywhere all the time for everyone, at the cost of diluting down the core game so much that nobody knows what they're playing any more.

There might be an edge case there cause doesn't corner to corner count, so if the flank is lined up perfectly 1-1 (say skirmishers flank attack) then to the one closest to the front by being corner to corner might qualify as front arc? Also, a BSB being a character needs to move to be in combat so it might defacto be turned to face the flank?
Either way I agree with the other anon and house rule they can see it at minimum.

I always thought that rule was silly. You remove the command squad last anyway, so why does it matter where they're positioned? I place my champion in the middle and my standard bearer/musician to either side of him, wherever they can fit without causing issues for the rest of the unit. Hell, I put my standard bearers in the back rank sometimes when their banners are too big, as they almost always are. It doesn't matter! Do it the way you like, just communicate with your opponent and it won't be an issue.

The only other army green skins might get won't even be a full army just a new army comp with a new character: Forest goblins. Will get a few special rules like more ambush, all the ranged units getting access to different ranged weapons like blow guns, or adding poison attacks for +1 pts per model. Maybe one or two units that get poison on 5+ instead of 6. Moving arachnarok down to special. Since it would be from a AJ maybe a new larger spider/millipede/insect of some kind that all O&G can take as special but forest gobs could take as core. That sort of thing. Not a whole new army book for sure.

TK are pretty undercooked but they look cool and they have a more appealing baseline for their lore, which is why they can be developed into something interesting. Cathay have been setup to be as milquetoast as possible which is sort of future proofing them from being potentially interesting in any forseeable future.

>Please excuse the fact that they are all clearly a few centenaries less advanced than either of those armies.
>In real life the Chinese were still using matchlocks and spears when western armies had moved on to percussion cap rifles.

you don't even need to go to the 19th century to find examples of China not handling Gunpowder well
the Japenese had the tech advantage when it came to guns during the invasion of Korea and both Korea snd the Ming Dynasty were underdeveloped than importing Arquebuses designs from Europe. The Siege of Fort Zeelandia by the Ming in 1664 also showed that even an undermanned Dutch fort could hold out against China for years due to poor technological developments in warfare by China

Best part was that you could actually combine Mortals, Demons, and Beasts in 6th as well, and you could use the same magic items. It'd be really cool to be able to do something like that in ToW, requirements being having a character of that race to include that specific race. Getting a few options as core... Maybe if your general is X, then you get one unit of Y and Z as core per character of that race, and then all core of that race count as special, and all special as rare, like in 6th
