I don't use magic items or named characters so I don't care. I'd like to see more hero options for Bretonnia though. Maybe a Questing Knight on Questing Beast, Grail Knight or Hermit Knight Loner duelist on foot, or a sneaky Herrimault bandit character who can lead Squires, Bowmen, or Brigands.

I'm not attacking you, I'm trying to make you think about what you just said.
Real originality is a misnomer, there's nothing new under the sun, only ways to mix them.
Expecting someone to imagine something that bears no traces of anything else he's seen or heard about would be like asking them to imagine a new color beyond the visible spectrum.
>Have burgeoning community
>Elect to play Expeditionary Force because I love Dwarfs and that was my preferred playstyle in Total War, figuring I'll expand into Royal Clans and such after
>BTFO most of my opponents doing what EF does (softening them up, destroying exposed large monsters, opponent sighs in relief when they finally reach me only to be lol parried and lose in combat res)
>Opponents nice enough about it, but can tell they're frustrated and getting concerned people might start avoiding games with me
>Start intentionally nerfing myself. Working on more miners, another cart, and kitbashing another gyro to make slightly weaker/more interactive lists before working on more melee units for royal clans
I regret doing Xforce first rather than the other way around- I would've reached 2K points way faster focusing on elite and 90% easy to paint metal ironbreakers and such and probably wouldn't have had as many miffed opponents.
Any advice on nerfing myself in the meantime? Or any good missions that might kneecap me? I played King of the Hill with Wood Elves and just parked my giant thunderer block on it, so unless I intentionally sabotage myself that's out.

The 3 I mainly play against run Tomb Kings, Wood Elves, and WoC.
I recently played and lost against a different TK player, an Empire player, and a Lizardman player, but unfortunately they're all old fantasy players so they're super busy with families and shit and only play once a month or so.
Personally I prefer competitive games where I get my ass handed to me than casual games were I win, but I understand that's not everyone's thing.
>Unless you are bringing 3+ bits of artillery
Guilty. I guess I stop doing that if my opponent isn't super experienced with dealing with them.
I don't know if it's competitive, but a block of 20+ thunderers with shields, expeditionary marksmen, Burlock, a Runesmith, and a BsB with a +1 combat res and 5+ ward save rune has been pretty effective, particularly against large targets. I can throw a sapper in there for extra defense too

95% of wargame players are garbage. You're going to encounter that problem no matter what army you play. That's why tournaments exist, constantly playing with ridiculously gimped armies because most people can't even put together basic synergies gets old very quickly.

I didnt build one, but for a large decal youre going to want a decal softener like microsol and a soft brush to squeegee the bubbles out from underneath it during application.
Also dont remove the backing and then use tweezers like you would with smaller decals, keep it on the paper and slide it into position from it
Do you consider the new AoS chorfs useful towards chorfs in TOW?
>>96500562
The robot is usable, the bull statue is usable, the bull centaurs are usable, the hobgrots are usable.
Anything else is complete garbage to the point even mantic stuff is better, since that's also in plastic.
And even then you're very much encouraged to look for non plastic solutions even for your basic troops, printing went a long way and you don't need one to get some units printed.
But as a general conclusion: these aren't chaos dwarfs, as in dwarfs with the chaos warrior reskin, nor dawi zharr, as in the discreet culture and aesthetic of the classic ones, they are dark duardin in the same way dark elves aren't strictly speaking chaos elves.
It's a big difference.

I getit. Your opponents aren't equipped to play TOW: Trench Warfare simulation and perhaps are more mixed forces. That said you are playing dwarfs so you're doing best you can and, ironically, the optimal play style.
I'd go back to my previous suggestion, swap out a ranged block or piece of artillery or two for melee infantry.

To keep it on topic - Throne of Chaos is so lovingly crafted and so much better than any of the Fantasy stuff that came after it. The glimpses we got of what might have come after make me sad. A book of the same quality as Tamurkhan built around the Khorne Dragon guy...maybe with a norscan horde theme raiding Bretonnian shores...resin Norscans sculpted by the SA guy. What happened to fantasy is so bleak and I cannot believe how popular AoS appears to be.

I sent my opponents Old World Rankings for list ideas, but how might they counter my gunlines? I'm not 100% sure how I'd keep a dragon safe from cannons and a bunch of rangers with 30' range. I guess I'd start by trying to end my deployment first so I get the +1 (as I do now,) and investing in a ton of magic.

My assumption in most fantasy is that
>They are more used to being outnumbered in tunnels
>Hammers and axes better reflect their daily activities (mining, crafting, forging)
Obviously it's really just a cool factor over the the practicality of making up for their reach
You do have Imperial Dwarfs though. Your dream is playable.
Do High Elves allow their women to fight for them?
Do they induct women into the militia levy or are they exempt from military service? Would a regiment of Silver Helms include any noble daughters?
I know that the models are exclusively male outside of the Sisters and Handmaidens, but I'm wondering if this is ever directly in the lore? Both Dark and Wood Elves are explicitly stated to include women in front-line combat roles.

yes
Every military organisation besides Sisters/Handmaidens and Phoenix Guard/annotated by Asuyan, are in the lore fully egalitarian and equal opportunity.
With the two exceptions due to the high elves' very gender based movement system of the Phoenix King and the Everqueen were, in theory, the Phoenix King decides all temporal matters of government, and the Everqueen decides all spiritual matters, which the wood elves have with Orion and Ariel, and Brettonia does similarly with the King and the fay enchantress.

It's honestly criminal that we don't see organized dwarf tunnel fighting more often.
>Hit and run ambush tactics by younger, more lightly armoured dwarf skirmishers using secret passages.
>Dwarf sappers cutting off retreats, dividing and isolating enemy forces, or flat out crushing them with collapsing tunnels.
>Heavily armoured dwarf veterans with tower shields and thrusting spears creating impossible choke points in low-ceiled, narrow passages where their enemies can't even stand up straight.

Need advice what to do next /tg/.
Currently I have a 1k army for WoC, 1250 if I change a few things or upgrade units to represent others. However it has become stale.
I realised most of my army just isn't that effective where my entire plan is based around my general and heavy cavalry hard carrying the entire game.
To this end, it has become extremely boring. Should I look to expand my army or start building a new one? Or just take a break?
As an example, there was a game where all my army broke upon crashing into a dwarf line and only till my knights and general flanked, suddenly was I winning.

I'd say go with whatever resonates with you in terms of aesthetics, lore, etc. rather than gameplay, unless the gameplay is truly unbearable. I'd also argue WoC is "two-note" (pretty good magic and elite melee units.) If the melee's getting boring, you could try to lean more into magic, then mix up the two for variety.
>Basically if you got into WoC because it appeals to your tastes lore/aesthetics-wise, I'd see if you couldn't look a bit more and see if there's a playstyle that appeals to you
>If you either got into it because it is the easiest faction or randomly, and/or find the gameplay truly boring, then maybe do some research and figure out what appeals to you the most.
Personally I got into Old World more because a pure Dwarf faction appealed to me rather than the other way around. They're pretty one-note, having little in variety but various levels of melee/gunlines, but the grinding down my opponent hasn't really gotten old for me because I love my little guys so much

Another army is fairly expensive. My only real choice is expansion. Don't get me wrong, it is satisfying when the knights RIP AND TEAR. What sucks is they're the only thing in my army besides my leader who seems to do their job consistently well.
However it also feels my other units are just fodder until the chosen knights and champion go to town. Which in practice, they certainly are.
I did consider Orcs but not sure if that's risking the same issue of one dimensional play or having a crutch unit where the rest are just there to bloat points.
>>96507324
You the other chaos bloke here? I'd thought their simplicity was a major appeal but now I am finding it a bit repetitive. Charge forward. If I reach with the cav, i win. If I do not, I lose.
Dude pulled a maneuver this weekend that feels wrong. He might be right but something feels off. He's playing lizards against my buds first vampire list.
His skirmish skinks were charged by his knights and they choose to flee. He had one of those stegadon beasts standing 4 inches behind the skinks, and stated that since one of the skinks touched the model while fleeing the entire unit runs past the monster, effectively giving them a flee of like 8 inches.
I can see why this can work, but this also seems really abusive when you could just leave 1-2 skinks in a chain leading towards friendly units so you can flee like 12+ inches.
>>96507812
With skirmishers, yes that is correct and yes it could be abused. But omce a member of a unit touches a friendly, they flee through it.

In this particular case I'd argue that the unit doesn't move to the back of the stegadon
the rule for fleeing is clearly written with units in formation in mind, while skirmishers are fluid, for this reason I'd have only the models directly on top of the intervening unit to move, to the back if possible, or to the smallest distance to remain in coherence with the rest of the unit
anything else feels like abusing the rules to get an unfair, and frankly often unnecessary advantage, so it's to be discarded as against the spirit of the game and the clear intent of the rules

Rieksgaurd is a good short book. a lot of warhammer books are pretty throw away, but I remember reading it a few years ago and found ot really solid. It showed both the noble and dark sides of the empire, along with some interesting intrigue, enjoyable combat, and catharsis. I think it is nearly the only reason why the rieksgaurd as a faction are interesting, because thier boilerplate intro as "the default knightly order" kind of makes them seem boring. But the book makes them interesting as the lifegaurd of the emperor and all the political machinations that come along with that position.

For what it's worth, I've also been feeling pretty burnt out on Chaos in TOW. The army rules for this edition are just not very fun. Sure, the army is strong if you play by the meta and collect specific units, but it's still just boring. Every sorcerer has to be on daemonology (and don't get me started on the absolute state of the chaos lores), every character has to have one or two favours of the gods (and that stupid d6 table is just awful too), there's zero incentive to experiment with magic items when the quasi-totality of them are just straight trash, marks are either actively harmful (Khorne), largely mediocre outside of niche cases (Nurgle on dragon lords, Slaanesh on "objective holding" units, which is a disgustingly 40k-like concept, but I digress), or conditionally excellent but incredibly lame (Tzeentch). By the way, to the anon I had a huge argument with about the mark of Tzeentch, you were right, it's significantly stronger now and has a place, but I still don't like how it's designed. And I haven't even started talking about individual units! I've decided to take a break from playing for a while so I can paint up some more regiments, but I'm really just hoping my community starts playing 6th again. Say what you will about the HoC army book, at least it had a ton of variety. Anyway, I don't really have any advice for you. Collect the models you want to collect, give older editions a try, and try to shake things up. Chaos is what you make of it and if GW is going to fuck the dog by writing boring rules, you may as well leave them to it.

We actually don't know anymore, the white dwarf article suggested that, but the actual aos lore is written with multiple layers of unreliability.
For now we only know that hashut CLAIMS to have been an ancestor god, and not only that, that he was the oldest amongst the ancestor gods, the first king.
Which is a very bold claim so it might all be bullshit.
Especially because aos lore also suggests that hashut only started dabbling in demon binding after a certain point in their age of myth, so is whatever he did in the old world is to be considered noncanon by aos? is it simply not remembered? was hashut given a pardon for that? were the old chaos dwarfs not actually following the real hashut? or is hashut lying?
It's all a mess, so the least we think about how it all fits together, the better, but the simplest answers to your question are that regardless of whether he was intended by the old ones to dabble in demonsmithing, he did, probably during the catastrophe, and that definitely gave him an edge over the other ancestor gods and allowed him to rise to a status akin to a chaos god.
If you want a schizotheory regarding the old ones planning for at least one chaos god, I have one that involves an ancestor god, but not hashut.

Huh? What are you even talking about?

The little lore blub left it fairly ambiguous actually. There's even the possibility that some random demon is larping as an ancestor god to gain worshippers among the aos dwarfs. It's basically what morathi did with khaine, so it's an established thing in aos.
>>96511002
>>96511172
I read the article and by itself it already clearly sets itself as non-canon to Fantasy beyond any speculation, because the whole myth of the ancestor simply can't happen in a timeline where WHF existed.
>Ancestor gods walk among the living at the beginning of duardin civilization (in the mortal realms)
>Hashut is apparently clean of any demon dealings during this early period
>The whole conflict starts because the ancestor gods+Hashut are splitting the mortal realms among themselves. No mention of previous enmity.
For the whole thing to happen as told in the myth you need to assume Warhammer Fantasy never existed, and since it did, given AoS is a literal sequel, then the entire myth loses all credibility from the get go. It's just a bunch of chuardin (who have absolutely no connection with chorfs) coping hard with their demon worship.
>>96511473
>For the whole thing to happen as told in the myth you need to assume Warhammer Fantasy never existed
Or hashut and the ancestor gods turned over a new leaf, just like nagash and malekith restarted as allies with a clean slate of whatever they did in the past, all for the greater good of building back shit.

Nta, I do think it's just unreliable narrator chorf cope but to be fair a lot of the incarnates/gods got fucked up during the end times->aos transition. Nagash got his memory wiped (for a bit), and then got his mind shattered in a million little schizo personalities.
>>96511496
>>96511525
In this particular case I just don't think there's a way to justify the story happening as told. It sound dumber than usual when told step by step.
>WHB ancestors predate Hashut by a few millennia
>After ET Hashut allegedly not only turns over a new leaf, but is fully forgiven for his bullshit and welcomed with open arms as a fucking brother to the ancestor gods
>Not only THAT, he assumes the role of a respected ELDEST brother
>Apparently, Hashut swore off daemonology and slavery in the transition, only to retrace the exact same steps just so the writers can justify Chaos dwarves sprouting out of nowhere once again in some convoluted form of convergent evolution.
The story is 100% pure bullshit, and if there's even an inkling of truth to it then that's a sign of bad writing. That's all I have to say on the topic, and about AoS lore in the WHF thread.

He also makes the domains of Kingship and ruling as his spheres of godhood, which aren't really Dwarf traits, at least compared to mining, smithing, brewing and honourable battle that the other main ancestor gods have as their main Spheres, so it's another example of Hashut not telling the full truth at best

Wasn't hashut being a fallen ancestor god always one of the main theories surrounding him? I mighr be confusing things though. But yeah there's way too much fuckery going on to take it at face value, and gw put all the "claims to" in there to really drive the point home.
Honestly it's things like this that make me realise that aos would probably have been better off as its own IP instead of having to make sense of end times stuff. I don't think there's much of aos that strictly NEEDS whfb to happen, since they have their own apocalyptic event anyway with the whole age of chaos.

Speaking of which, I got this free mini of the month and plan to kitbash a Grudge Thrower by sticking it at the end of a Bloodthirster's fire stand thingy, putting a bunch of barrels and bombs from the miner kit around, and having the miner making the O face pointing up.
Thought I'd replace the head with a gyrocopter one (they're pretty much the same size.) Wondering if I should put this head on one of the ironbreakers or something, making her the sole woman in my army.

Basically Bloodthirsters come with two stands, and I have a few of these lying around from my Oops all bloodthirsters AoS army.
My plan is to stick the mini on the end of it, then put a bunch of barrels and pipe bombs towards the bottom of the fire. Then, instead of the girl head, I'm doing a gyro pilot head since they have goggles.
The idea is that, instead of a grudge thrower, we're just sticking a dwarf on a metal ball then detonating a bunch of explosives to launch him at the enemy.
I will have the female-dwarf head left over, so was thinking about putting it on a dude to meet diversity quotas

Question for the Warhammer RPG from someone that played a bit of 1e as a kid, a bit of 2e as a teen and is now coming back to 4e: what's the main point of getting money? Obviously you can't buy magical items in bulk like in other fantasy RPGs and even the heaviest of armor doesn't seem too expensive. Is it perhaps about the guns and a steady stream of gunpowder and bullets?

It's not supposed to be D&D where you spend your money to get even better equipment to loot more caves. Your character is supposed to spend it on food, housing, clothes, invest it into their next project, business, or just drink it away, gamble, fuck prostitutes and the lords daughter while you are it. If you have money, find creative and fun ways to spend it that make sense for your character, their station in society, their goals and business.
Or just make your weapons fancier and easier to use. The lightweight attribute is really worthwhile on heavy armor, if your character wears those.

Then if I'm reading it right that's just the minimum cause you can also choose to roll on the steeds patron Demon gift tables if you don't like the generic attribute roll so that's another 2 pages per Chaos God ... or you can make your own Demon from scratch with it's own gift table that can be rolled on so you could have literally anything.

It depends what edition you want to play, but generally, your going to play a fucked up and evil brettonia. Meaning hyper elite knights and beat stick heroes crashing into blocks of infantry tied up by your lowly canon fodder. if you are going to play the old world, I don't think this edition has the bloodlines from earlier editions, meaning your likely just going to play a standard vampire army. You can still have a cavalry majority force, but it'll be a little awkward since there's no lord abilities that benefit cavalry.

I think I can put up with that. As long as I can play around with vampiric cavalry of some variety I think that's good enough for me. I am going in with an attitude of that I will be suboptimal and likely not going to win a lot of games but at least enjoy the experience of playing on the board as well as seeing my units in formation. It sounds autistic, but old fantasy's board space always seemed far more interesting and compelling to look at with how armies are organised. That and I have grown distant with 40k as I have gotten older and how non-cohesive armies are now

Thematically a Blood Dragon army is supposed to be an elite army of grave guards, black knights and blood knights.
Grave Guards are the best infantry in the entire game. You can legit play a brick of 30 and another brick of 20 and have a bad ass army of heavy infantry.
Blood knights are one of the best unit in the roster and also some of the best cav in the game but in a 2k point you can play like 10 of them. They're very impactful though.
Vampires as characters on foot or horse are suboptimals (but still playable) because they're too expensive. That being said picking one as a your army standard bearer is a good option and have a vampire lord on a dragon is very strong.
Skeletons are totally playable even though zombies would probably be a better option (cheaper for the same role) but it's whatever.
Vampire Counts is literally one of the strongest faction in The Old World and almost everything in the roster is playable.

Okay its been a hot minute but i vaguely remember some WHFB novels from the 90's implying Cathay eventually falls to worship of Tzeentch, was that ever canon in the game or just "they are never getting there any time soon' filler in black library stuff?
Okay 40k fag getting into the square base game i have one question: whats the point of fillers? just OCD to fill a tray or a gameplay reason?

A filler is a model on a larger base that represents multiple infantry models in a unit. For example, a 50x75mm filler would count as six 25mm models. It's a way to have bigger units without buying quite as many models. It's also a fun way to make use of spare parts and build things you normally wouldn't have a reason to build.

You're welcome. I'd start by getting 20 grave guards, 20 skellies or zombies (your preference), 5 blood knights, 5 wolves and/or 3 fell bats and a wight lord, a vampire and a necro on foot.
That should be almost exactly 1000 points and will give you a well rounded and very good army to play the game with and see what you like and don't like.
Is it a bit cheeky to use an ogre to be a 4 unit filler for Jade Warriors? i have a few of those cursed city ogres that i feel you could kitbash for more variety and to add more ogres to the army overall.

Anyone managed to make miners work in Expeditionary Force?
I've been trying because I love the unit and the idea of it. I may just suck at using them, but my finding is
>80% of the time they come up at a time where there's nothing to threaten, so I either put them in the back lines to be shot to death/charged and pushed off the next term or use them as a very expensive screen
>20% things go according to keikaku and an opponents unit get's sandwiched between miners and another unit, leading to them getting charged from the rear regardless of what they do
I basically have just been using them to "debuff" my list for newer opponents, giving them something to destroy (probably) and taking up points from warmachines/gunlines

Similarly, a testudo formation with pikes or dwarven spears would stop cavalry charges rather effectively.

I like Cathay. The models are high quality too, just wish they released a full range rather than nothing but big centre piece models. I mean hell, they don't even have missile infantry!
I think it's a good idea because it gives us a tangible way to play on the other half of the Warhammer planet, for those of us who want to. I just wish GW would make Cathay a magical version of The Empire, where it should be formations of pole arm weidling mortals supported by magical creatures and inferior tech, like a Bizarro Empire.
They should have all the units from the Total Warhammer III, it infuriates me that the soldiers don't have crossbows wtf. Also where are the peasant levies?
Then again, I also think they should make a Bretonnia style Nippon army where it's Samurai that are basically full anime, in that you can kit them out to be one man blenders(not as crazy as vampires used to be, but a middle ground), supported by peasants. Maybe Yokai and gunpowder too?

The sprue for the model is massively over engineered (somthing that GW kits have been sliding towards for years now) and realistically the kit could have been made with far fewer parts and kept the same level of detail. This may have been done on purpose to make recasting it much harder.

I fucking won't, though I don't find TOW magic boring, just very barebones and not very fluffy. It's in a serviceable state, I can still play an insane pyromancer Outcast Wizard and a healslut Damsel so I'm satisfied.
>>96521470
Tow magic is great, you don't play the game.
>>96524131
We don't need to go from one extreme to another, anon. Personally, my issue with TOW's magic is that the spell lores just suck and casting magic isn't exciting at all. It's routine! Every turn, you cast the same spells, because why wouldn't you? Every game, you run the same lore, because why wouldn't you? There's no variety! You can't even make your wizard a specialist in a specific lore or kind of spell because the lores are all jumbled up. Even if some of the old lores weren't meta, they were still fun. Now everyone is just reduced to taking either battle magic, elementalism, or daemonology, with the other lores being almost entirely useless. Hell, even the good lores often have several spells that just suck and don't do anything. Tell me, how many times have you rolled daemonic familiars, daemonic vortex, summon elemental spirit, flaming sword, or curse of cowardly flight and had them actually do anything of value in a game? The lores are so lopsided that taking a lore familiar is almost mandatory because your wizard desperately needs specific spells to actually do anything. And how do you cast these spells? Two dice, that's it. Your wizard isn't channeling the winds of magic to imbue his casting with the raw power of chaos, risking his very soul in order to eke out just a little bit more arcane might, he's casting a spell the same way he'd make a break test.
>>96524676
But you can't really make a pyromancer outcast wizard, that's the problem. A battle mage only gets two fire spells (neither of which is guaranteed) and the other spells aren't fiery at all! A fire wizard used to be able to roll from 6 or, depending on the edition, 7 fire spells.

I'm getting tired of people saying that every time I talk about something I dislike in TOW. I've posted many battle reports before. You can disagree with me, but don't call me a liar. TOW's magic was designed for people who hated the magic phase and I think that's terrible.

You're a liar and a retard. Tow magic is great. It's impactful and varied without ruining the game. You suck ass.

Hes right, ToW magic is functional but has zero flavour, most of the lores are gone, and without winds of magic theres very little decision making or risk:reward, you just attempt to cast every spell you have, every time.

You're not right. Every lore has great spells and they're all different. There's plenty of decision making when you build your army, pick the lores, the items, when you roll the spells and when you use them in the game.
Not having a dice pool doesn't make the magic in tow boring, that's barely relevant at all. Only a braindead faggot who doesn't play would say that.

It wasn't even power gaming. Just show up with a wizard who can cast a vortex.

>Personally, my issue with TOW's magic is that the spell lores just suck and casting magic isn't exciting at all. It's routine!
The lores definitely don't suck. 1.5 nerfed magic so it isn't a question of magic sucking.
Is it "boring"? Maybe. But I'd prefer that lol so random spikes in effectiveness.
Whole 2 hour games not mattering because one player got randomly rolled his buttrape spell and randomly irresistible cast it isn't fun to me.

I disagree.
Both I and my opponent remember and laugh about the time I blew up an entire block of Lothern Sea Guard with rancid visitation and he couldnt pass his toughness test for shit, or when he popped my unit of chaos knights AND my lord with Gehennas Golden Globe.
Neither of us remember that time I cast phantasmagoria and it was tactically useful.

Like I said, very barebones, but magic is still good and you can still do interesting things with it
