It hits pretty close to the Ghost Bear Alpha Galaxy scheme, though most painters go with slightly more saturated blues and greys. Otherwise there are a variety of units that use a blue or grey base with the other color as highlight, but not much in the way of camo. The two colors together are most often associated with the Bears, Coyotes, or Rasalhague, but blue is a pretty common color in Lyran and Fed parade schemes and grey shows up everywhere. If you want that scheme specifically say it's an OC mercenary unit or a specialist subcommand of a House unit, like the Fox's Teeth or Sorenson's Sabres. There is an existing merc regiment, Markson's Marauders, described as using light blue, grey, and white in an urban camo pattern. That's probably as close a match as you'll get for an canon IS unit.

What's the go-to best way to get the earlier Mechwarrior games running on modern windows 10? Is there a paste or infopic about them? With whatever quality of life mods might be out there. Specifically MW 2 through 4. I'm gonna try to slog through the x68000 version of the first.

If that won't work (the thing is about 10 years old) then your best bet is to find MW2 and MW3 preservation groups separately (like mechvm.org and unmech3.org).
Especially MW3 is notoriously picky has a page unmech3.org for running the old version and new fan-made unity version (work in progress).
Alternatively there is PCem so running the damn thing like it's 1999.

A while back a friend of mine's uncle passed and his hobby was ww2 scale models. He also had a rather time consuming but lucrative career so he had dozens of models still in boxes just sitting on the shelf, waiting for him to have time he ultimately never did. The “mektek files” on moddb works fine for the (I believe?) latest Mektek release of MW4 mercs, very minimal tweaking may be required but it runs fine on windows 11. Vanilla Vengeance and Black Knight are also easy to find, but I haven’t really bothered with them.

DOS versions of MW2 are easy to find, run them in dosbox.

Mechwarrior 3 is a bitch to get running on a modern machine, but you can install it then get the Unity remake of the game, unmech3, which as far as I know does run smoothly

Thank you. The regent is quite messy up close, but I was just fiddling around with colours. A lot of my minis I only spend one or two hours on so they tend to be pretty messy. Hellbringer was probably 6~7 hours over 3 days.

This (picrel) is my favourite new paint trick and I find it really saves a ton of time. Basically oil wash. I apply all over and let sit for 10~20 minutes and then poke at the mini with a makeup q-tip to remove it from the panels. good for greebling and adding some shading. The red version of the paint, Fire Breath I used on the red firefly in that picture and it only took one coat over a thin pink base, so definitely interesting and versatile paint.

Only issue is that if you wanna do multiple coats of it, you'll probably want a matte varnish between them. since they can reactivate. and you need a special thinner (I bought a large container of an odorless one instead of the smaller stinky expensive bottle AK sells).

basically... base coat gunmetal, lay in colours with markers and then use AK dark wash, then highlight with brush, do chrome, and then another final dark wash.

For certain factions and certain BV levels I find a lot of merit in bringing a succwar/introtech unit to a darkage/ilclan era game. Mechs like the Banshee 3S, Devastator 1D and Highlander 733 are a good fit for poverty Great House units or Periphery units. I miss the /btg MegaMek simulations in which everyone created characters and rolled for mechs. So I'm going to see about setting one up, but with a twist, I'll just use my own minis. So there won't be rolling on the RAT, but there will still be randomness. First things first however, we need to choose a scenario. There will be 2 rounds to this, first for determining tech level, then if necessary, the factions involved. So here they are.

After twenty years of absence, I got bit by the BattleTech bug abain, got myself pic related and now want to paint them.

Problem is, I don't know shit. I will, without a doubt, fuck something up. So I'm inclined to do some prep research.

So here are my two questions for you.
1) how can I strip these plastic minis without melting them, and
2) which paints work for that?

For plastic, use 90% Isopropyl Alcohol if you need to strip the paint. You'll wanna be careful because these are generally assembled with a kind of superglue, but they do them pretty tight to begin with and if they come apart they'll glue right back together without any damage.

For paints, the easiest choice is acrylic paints over an acrylic primer. Then you're best off sealing with a gloss polyurethane varnish for durability. Some people prefer matte or satin, but I've been told these can be less durable, so when I matte back up the non-shiny parts of the mech, I do so with a top coat of matte over the gloss.

Some other tips: A lot of the minis have a lot of greebles and recesses that will shade up very nicely if you use a shade/pin wash or panel liner/ink. Be careful if you decide on a panel liner because many of them are enamel: you will want to do them after a coat of the polyurethane to protect the paint and plastic beneath.

I also prime with a 'zenithal' prime of a white primer sprayed from above over a coat of black primer which makes the light-facing surfaces start white and the undersides/shadows start black. This can give your minis more depth especially if you're using rather transparent paints.

However you finally decide to paint, I at the very least strongly recommend the 'paint sandwich' of primer, paint and varnish to get the nicest looking, most durable play pieces you can make.

Ah, right, I nearly forgot to clarify something a little different about rolling for mechs this time around. Since this battle will be simulated on the tabletop and not in Megamek, the list of what's available is limited, mainly by the color schemes I gave them. Some mechs are in-line with their faction, others are not. What can I say, my brain thinks a Highlander should be purple.

So when you roll a mech, you're rolling for the mini. That means that duplicates aren't an option, except in some cases. For some of them, you'll notice that the mech is listed twice, such as Enforcer/Enforcer. That's because I have 2 available for that faction in its colors. So it can be duplicated once.

This next part will not affect the very first people that roll for a mech, but it's more likely to come up as more mechs get rolled. If you roll a mech that's already been claimed, instead of re-rolling, you take the next mech up the list. (The entry that is next lowest.)

Example. You want to roll a unit for the FWL. You roll a 784, a Rifleman. But someone has already rolled the Rifleman, so that means you go to the next up the list, the Quickdraw. If the Quickdraw has also already been taken, you get the Manticore Heavy Tank. And so on and so forth until you get an open one.

This is likely going to be a somewhat long endeavor as it is. I'm afraid that would just not be feasible. All I can say is that I promise to be unbiased. The skills and rules will be the same for both sides. I have not generated a pilot for myself precisely for this reason.

I had considered that. Believe me, I've put some thought into the length of this thing. With just a lance vs lance however, I figured it would not allow for enough people to be involved and as a result, would be less interesting.

My current plan for this is that once the game is started, I will try and do a turn or 2 everyday. I will take pictures of the battlefield and write up what happened each turn in a document. I'll be able to use the map sheets hex numbering to keep track of movement positions each turn, allowing myself to accurately resume from where I left off each day.
I fully expect this to take a while to finish. Likely an entire month as I work on it off and on. Maybe even longer. Maybe less if I get a full free day and devote extra time to getting more turns in. For all the participants, I personally recommend you forget about it for a bit. I'll give some advance warning of when its finally done and I plan to post it so people can be on the lookout for it. Just for visibility, I imagine I'll try to time it with the start of a new topic.
Anyway, for now we're still rolling the mechs and pilots. I'll update the roster later today, but at the moment it looks like the FWL had 3 more slots filled with the Phoenix Hawk, SRM Carrier, and a Raven.

So this is dumb and obvious, but I'm just asking for my peace of mind.

Played my first game of Alpha Strike with a friend, I brought the box set and talked him into trying it, and we played the introductory skirmish (Northwind Highlanders with a Phoenix Hawk, Blackjack, Locust and Wasp vs Clan Jade Falcon with a Nova and Pouncer). I let him pick a side; he went with the Highlanders so I took the Clannies.

It was short. He successfully landed only two attack rolls and the rest of his rolls were total squibs - terrible luck. Tabled him very quickly. The main point of consternation though was as follows:

>Zips his Locust around behind my Nova, pointing guns straight into its back in short range
>Because I won initiative, I move last, so I simply kick the Nova into reverse and move instantly behind the Locust instead before any shots are fired
>The locust can no longer fire at the Nova during firing phase, and the Nova fires straight into the Locust's back and blows it apart instantly
>Highlands player is upset that this feels like a "free kill" and that there may have been some mechanic missed where I needed to roll or something in order to Fist of the North Star him like that.

Did we play this out right or should I not have been able to do that to him? My intuition is that losing an initiative roll is a big deal and in a round where you don't have initiative you should be a lot cagier with mech movement, keep your distance to prevent getting lapped and flanked like that, but it does feel odd that this one coin toss will pretty much decide who "wins" a given round outright in a lot of cases.

You need infantry to load external cargo onto mechs or vehicles. Taking an APC and infantry to load up mech sized backpacks and cargo nets might make more sense than taking a bunch of big cargo trucks. External cargo slows things down, but raiders aren't looking for fights to begin with.

Tried out the playtest rules that got leaked here last week (the real ones)

Despite the buff to MRMs, my Catapult K5 missed every single shot with them and fell on her face twice. By turn 5 she had four pilot damage and had blacked out. I had cursed dice overall and couldn't even kill the Locust C that was running around.

New C3 is more interesting and I think better balanced.

The most common by far are the Invader, Merchant, and Scout classes. Pirates don't materialize from the aether, they were already large units with jumpship support before they became pirates. Also you don't have to own a jumpship to use one, the vast vast vast majority of dropship owning space travelers have zero ownership stake in jumpships. They rent out collar slots and owner-operators can throw their lot in with whoever they feel like.

The side facings turned out to be really intuitive and I like them. We only had one ammo explosion, my Panther CA's SRM ammo, which was CASE'd, so it didn't actually change much as the 10 damage was still enough to blow off the torso and one pilot hit vs two wasn't a huge difference.

Overall I prefer the changes.

I played a game (two actually) with the new rules this weekend. It was 3070, 10k BV per side, with one side running 4 lights and 4 mediums and the other 2 heavies and 2 assaults. We both made a list to play on each side and took turns playing as the small guys and the big guys on different days, same map, with the winner being determined as the first one to eliminate 50% of the opponent's mechs. Both times it was an absolute slaughter. With the frontloaded init, the lights frequently had to just keep their TMMs as high as possible (Kinda useless in the tcomp/pulse/prec era) and the change to ammo explosions made heavies/assaults MUCH harder to kill without being able to reliably backstab.

I don't know if sides are automatically better than rear. If you've already blasted away a lot of the armor on the side torso or arm it might be better, but on a relatively fresh target the toilet paper most mechs have instead of rear armor is still a very juicy target.

My LGS played with the playtest rules today. my first feelings after playing was that I quite like the hit chart change.


1) it makes shielding damaged parts of the mech possible. I had a heavily damaged right arm and right leg on my Cyclops and by keeping my right side turned away from the banshee it was engaged with.
2) The guy I played against had only been into the game was relatively new and sometimes struggles with the existing side charts
3) It makes fall damage much more interesting because if you fall on the left you will be taking fall damage there for sure.


The ammo explosion changes were more interesting. We had 3 tables playing games and all went about 6/7 turns. We intentionally all built forces with ammo that exploded and most of us brought mechs with no CASE. In those 3 games only 2 ammo explosions happened which I think goes to point out that they really are not actually that common. Ammo explosion 1 was on the table next to me where a T-bolt had the LRM Ammo go up, he confirmed a crit against himself on another ammo bin that killed the mech so effectively the same effect as current rules. 2nd was my opponent who had the banshee lose a full SRM ammo in a stripped arm. He lost the arm 14 points splashed into the torso and he got an engine crit against himself. Not great but still an assault mech capable of doing assault mech things


What I think is interesting is it meant the game wasn't immediately over. By that point on turn 5 I had shot the leg off his Marauder II and it was down behind a hill and effectively out of the game. I had 5 mechs to his 3 even if my Dervish and scorpion were in rough shape. Had he taken the 180 points of full damage from the SRM bin and the Banshee roman candled itself he said he would have conceded then and there but instead we still played another couple rounds and it was uphill but there was actually a game that continued to occur where otherwise we would have just packed up
