>What is /awg/?
A thread to talk about minis and games which fall between the cracks, or peoples' homebrew wargames.
The >>>/tg/hwg thread doesn't entertain fantasy (for good reason) and the other threads are locked to more specific games.
This thread isn't tied to a game, a publisher, or a genre, let's just talk about fun wargames. Any scale, any company, any miniatures.

>Examples of games that qualify.
A Song of Ice and Fire, Argatoria, Batman Miniature Game, Carnevale, Conquest: The Last Argument of Kings,
Deadzone, Dropfleet and Dropzone Commander, Freebooter's Fate, Frostgrave, Gaslands, Judge Dredd, HeroClix,
Kings of War, Maelstrom's Edge, Malifaux, Marvel Crisis Protocol, Masters of the Universe: Battleground, Moonstone,
Oathmark, OnePageRules, RelicBlade, Rumbleslam, Stargrave, Sludge, Urban War, Void, Warcaster, Warmachine, Xenotactics...
...and anything else that doesn't necessarily have a dedicated thread.

>Examples of companies providing rules and/or miniatures for alternative wargames.
Archon Studio, Atomic Mass Games, Black Site Studios, CMON, Mantic, North Star Military Figures,
OnePageRules, Osprey, Para Bellum, Seb Games, Spellcrow, TTCombat, Victrix, Wargames Atlantic, Warlord Games...
...and many other publishers.

While this does look excellent, and I shall be looking into it, it's not quite what I've been looking for, and it's perhaps on me for not fleshing out what Broken Legions is in my initial post.

Broken Legions is a decidedly small scale skirmish game that typically has less than 15 miniatures on the table at any given time in my experience. It's very narrative driven and designed for people with some imagination to lend the events a more serious tone.

But again, thank you for the Midgard suggestion, Rank and Flank isn't really my thing but this looks fascinating.

if you like the game and want something for the particular setting, why not just modify the game with your own homebrew rules? It's unlikely you're going to find a better fit for that niche setting than that very niche set of rules.

>If someone knows of a game that let's you pit Fantasy Romans vs Mummies, Minotaurs, Barbarians, Dacians, the Argonauts, Parthians etc please let me know.
Brutality Skirmish and En Garde both work if you're into 5-10 models per side or a couple larger monsters. En Garde doesn't handle anything bigger than an ogre well, Brutality has a "beastiary" supplement that lets you go into mid-sized dragon territory.
>other considerations
Brutality's big gimmick is letting you play pretty much any time period. You can mix them up or take it straight. That said it puts hard limits on your character archetypes. So you'd only have a couple hard melee hitters (Legionaries) before you need to add in stuff like a support spellcaster, fast skirmishers, tanky dudes (maybe cavalry?) etc. It's still doable. Has an excellent one-player mode as well as two-player with neutral enemies. Combat system is pretty normal diceoffs with no frills. Has an okay campaign system with sanity rules and an overall theme of keeping the gods happy that could all work nicely with Romans in a horror setting.
En Garde is more of a swashbuckler, theoretically Early Modern/Renaissance but quite functional as far back as Bronze Age with a little list-building. It works very well for asymmetric combat, you need to use coordinated attacks from several weaker fighters to pull down stronger enemies. Supports cavalry, missile troops, etc.. Campaign mode is very rudimentary and it doesn't work well for solo. The combat system has a unique bluffing/resource mechanic that looks complicated but isn't. As someone who's done a lot of HEMA it flows very quickly and a lot like a sword fight - you choose how defensive or offensive you're going to be at the start of a fight, then have to predict your opponent's choices and react appropriately
Both games have very similar scales, rule density (light, <50ppg), number/quality of published scenarios, and price, so those are a wash on all accounts.

Unironically OPR but only with core rules. Pick unit that have next to no special rules or simply alter profiles by removing some and call it a day. OPR is extremely modular, even the core rules can have some layers stripped off still to make it even more simple.

I can't force myself to buy into Warmachine because of the ridiculous inconsistency of materials used for manufacturing and how releases are planned.
I find Orgoth Graveborn simply amazing in terms of design and sculpts but I won't ever be able to expand them into a proper army since all the other kits are 3D printed slop and there is no way in the world I will put my trust in SFG printing quality. If I could buy STLs and ask one of the local proonters to print them for me that would be somewhat fine but of course it's not possible. Dark Operations are 100% STLs but they are an army of legend so that's a no as well.
I wish SFG committed to Warmachine and release hard plastic expansions for the hard plastic starter boxes at least.

You should be able to use bigger models alongside HG, but infantry is too small. They need to be something like half a time again as tall to work. Unless you count them as hobbits.

>I can convince them

You dont need to convince them, you just give them (enough) money, and they make any set you want. And you'd even get a percentage of every sold box, which is why those commissioned sets are always a bit more expensive than their inhouse sets. (see Spacenam, Quar etc).

You mean the HG infantry are too small or the EW infantry are too small? I've heard the EW minis are tall but thin while the HG infantry are short but chunky.
15mm minis are probably right out though, unless you want tiny aliens.

>What do you need to get started with frostgrave other than a warband or two
It depends. You can get by with a pretty small collection. My recommendations (this will get you a reasonably complete setup for <$100)-
>Frostgrave Undead packs from Mantic
These are just a couple sprues of skeletons, and one each of Ghouls and Zombies. Very, very cheap for what you get. Next cheapest is buying a sprue each of Zeds and Skellies from a Wargames Atlantic reseller like Recreational Conflict
>Reaper Animal Companions 5, wolf pack, and Giant Rats
Gets you a bear, a leopard, multiple wolves, and a wolverine you can use as a Frost Toad plus six cheap rats for ~$25
>Your choice of two trolls/ogres from Ral Partha Europe or Reaper
Can substitute for any of the Big Guys
>Wargames Atlantic Dark Age Irish (1 sprue)
Gets you a small pack of wild or tame dogs and Barbarians (you can also use the Barbarians as Beastmen/Gnolls, Rangifer, etc. as you move through modules). North Star Tribals are another good choice here. They just don't have the extra dogs
>Any manufacturer (Nolzurs will be cheapest)
A Vampire, Mummy, or similarly powerful Undead model, a large Genie/demon, some man-sized demons, a werewolf, and a couple of Imps or cherubs.
For one of the scenarios you need six Constructs; the easiest way is painting up minis you don't want as statues. All of mine came out of the broken/missing parts bin at my LGS for $1.

That gets you a nice spread of Animals, Constructs, Humanoids, Demons, Undead, and all the Companion models the average warband will want to summon if they get the relevant spells. There's more stuff on the list, theoretically, but it doesn't really matter.

>You mean the HG infantry are too small or the EW infantry are too small?
EW are too small. For HG you need infantry models in around 14-17 mm range for infantry and power armor.
EW infantry is around 10-11 mm. Those that are taller and heavier units can work, but straight infantry is too small.

The simplest rule - infantry should be around half the height of the small gear.

Any given 40k knockoff - as a Marine with Heavy Bolter proxy
As a combat mech in most 15mm games
Stargrave - combat 'borg, although the gun will be disappointing

So does anyone have an opinion on Dracula's america/Dead Man's Hand/Fistfull of lead reloaded?
I'm thinking of getting the Dead Man's Hand starter, but I sorta like the idea of doing a weird west thing with zombies, as a co-operative experience/campaign. Dracula's America's factions all look really cool so I like that angle, but the starter for DMH is too good to pass up in terms of the terrain and minis you get. So worst case I but that one month and get the Dracula's America gangs after.
Basically my buddy I play with wants to do a more campagin focused thing, in carnevale, but we have other games that do campaigns better, fallout factions. But I want something that is more flexable, I only have 100 ducat gangs for carnevale so a campaign would cost me money as it is so doing something weird/wild west isn't too much of a concern.
Also Blaster #5 is an option for the game mechanics as well.

Yeah they look fine. You get plenty of non-alien/fully hooded heads, and all the weapons are a mishmash of vaguely-Soviet ballistic weapons - perfectly fine for Stalkers. You also get 2 sets of zombie arms and heads per sprue so you can turn leftovers into zombified stalkers too, which is neat. You could pick up a sprue of mercenaries or crew for some extra human heads if you need, mercs for helmeted and crew for uncovered, but the box itself is fine as is if you're okay with mostly hooded heads.

How can you say they are to small for their scale, when they are pretty much exactly 1/56 scale, as indicated on their box? Same as rubicon, and countless other companies that sell 1/56 vehicles for wargaming.

Now if you would say, 1/56 is too small in itself, thats an entirely different statement, and up for debate, but Warlords vehicles are 1/56, and you might think that the wrong scale, but they are not "noticeably smaller than they should be at that scale".
Anonymous No.96539702 [Report] >>96539722
>>96539589
I use 1/48 scale for Bolt Action myself, for two reasons:
Tamiya kits are nicer than both, Warlord and Rubicon, and i enjoy the modelling aspect too. i also dont like to bring big tanks to an infantry focused game anyway. And for smaller vehicles, like a Jeep or Kübelwagen, 1/48 just looks better. Small to mid-sized tanks too. (T-34/Pz 4 etc), but anything bigger than that looks completely oversized, if you have the slightest idea of how big these vehicles were in RL.
Pic related Elefant, or any other Tiger/Panther based vehicle is just too tall 1/48 compared to your average (even if they are chunky) 28mm soldiers. KV-2 too.
The reason for this is the miniatures gain more width, but not enough height by their heroic proportions, while vehicle scale increases evenly in all directions.

1/50 plastic kits would be ideal, but since they dont exist, 1/48 remains a compromise that looks wrong, but for the smaller trucks and light tanks of the early war era it just looks a little bit better.

100% false, 1/56 Warlord vehicles are entirely too small, and every single historical player knows this. Look at any picture of a bolt action vehicle next to a soldier, and then look up a real picture of that vehicle next to a real person. You will see that the Bolt Action vehicle is comically undersized.
One of the main problems is that 28mm troops are NOT actually 1/56. Maybe 25mm troops were back in the day, but 28mm troops are not. Look at this pic of the 28mm Warlord infantry compared to the 1/56 Warlord tank crewman made by Rubicon.

I played two campaigns of Five Parsecs so far, and i like the light ruleset a lot, because when playing by myself, i dont need a sweaty or deep ruleset, the immersion comes from my imagination. But i could do with less bookkeeping. On the other hand, making up little stories for all the results from rolls on the after battle/in between mission tables is great.

I want to play Five Leagues from the Borderlands next, because i've read its campaigns play a bit differently from the "Space"-Version, with way more narrative elements and the game apparently encourages you to draw a map while playing and exploring. It sounds like something i would enjoy to do, and currently i'm building a variety of fantasy minis so i can play a few missions without having to fight my Oathmark Goblins every time.

I came from Kings of War which kind of died near me, and am happy how elegant Conquest is. The game not having deployment zones or a deployment phase is great. You just put your models down the first time they activate and still get the experience of trying to maneuver your dudes over to your opponents. I'd say it's intuitive, I didn't find that any rules threw me off. It's expensive though.

>Is the game worth learning?
Absolutely. It's very easy to learn and it's hard to forget because it's pretty damn simple, so coming back to it after some time away is simple.
>Is it fun?
Personally I find it to be a tremendous amount of fun. It's pulpy and oldschool, by design, and really straightforward.
>Is it easy to learn and teach curious players?
Very. It's a D10 roll under system. If you roll equal to or over, the test is a failure. Skills are separated into five categories: Agility, Fighting, Shooting, Awareness and Psyche. It's alternating activation, based on Agility rankings.
"In a turn each character may make 2 actions. Rather than one player acting with all their characters first, both players activate characters according to their Agility score. Starting with the highest (A) and working down, players perform actions with their characters until all characters have had a chance to act."
>What sets it apart from other skirmish games?
The use of polyhedral dice and the overt focus on making your own custom units using the games myriad character creation tables and vehicle creation tables. There is campaign play if that appeals to you, and there are "off table" games where you heal characters, buy new equipment and inject narrative into your ongoing games.
>Is acquiring a physical copy a difficult task?
A digital copy can be obtained for free from WargameVault for the grand price of free, thanks to the "pay what you want" option. A physical copy can be obtained from the makers store page, https://www.mammothminiatures.com/product/planet-28-second-edition, but some people have said they had problems getting their order. Converting to standard since I'm a burgerfat, that's .433". Are you measuring from their feet or the bottom of the base (if the STLs have them)?
Taking my calipers to my HG minis, I'm getting:
AST Infantry:
>.515" from the top of the helmet to the bottom base,
>.045" thick base
>.47" tall from head to toe.
Norf Infantry:
>.505" overall
>.038" base
>.467" head to toe
Achillus Power Armor:
>.545" overall
>.030" base
>.515" head to toe.
Flail (Metal):
>.71" top of main body to bottom of foot

Overall I think they're close enough to work together. I don't think it'll be all that noticeable from a few feet away on the tabletop.

Looks like a 2k army runs $500-$700? That's not horrible, in line with ToW and the sculpts aren't nearing 20 years old. It's definitely more expensive than KoW though.
Have you tried the skirmish version?

I haven't played the skirmish version, it's probably too late for me as I've glued most of my current guys to their square bases. Skirmish doesn't look bad. Models have different profiles and sometimes different roles than their mass battle equivalents from what I've gleaned of the rules.

You might be able to get a cheaper army via Yoroni. They are the equivalent of ogres sort of with how all of their models are high points cost and on big bases. I definitely think that the line overall is higher quality and much more modern than the competitors as you've mentioned. It's all hard plastics from Archon Studios with a few resin characters and monsters which is nice.

They talked about Kings of War 4th edition at Clash of Kings UK. End of November. I'm glad that all the armies are still around, I will genuinely paint Ratkin Slaves if they are telling the truth.

Cultists 3 sprue, I really like the 2-handed weapons and polearms on this sprue. Not so sure about the heads, but those are always the easiest to change. I hope the human heavy infantry will be previewed soon.

I found a load of 1/72 figures in a biscuit tin that I owned as a kid, so now I am painting them up to use for WW2 wargames. I have almost finished off the british troops, next to do are the germans, yanks and soviets.

I quit like the 1/72 scale, the stuff is cheap as dirt and using larger scale wargame rules, the weapon ranges seem more realistic than the usual 1/48 that games like Bolt Action uses.

Does anyone know anything of Warmachine MK4? I'm curious if I can run mono fire tongue warriors (including mercs I guess). Trollbloods look terrible to me

I need you to suggest solo games to me. I've tried Parsecs, I've tried Stargrave and Frosgrave, tried Rangers of Shadowdeep I've tried all the typically recommended titles and NONE of them engage me. Give me requests that don't typically come up or try and sell me on a regular game where I can play both sides. The last game I solo played that was GOOD was Renegade Scout 2.

You can't over estimate the cultural impact of the western, the first western film was made in 1899 (by the Brits!) and genre dominated cinema until the 1970s. Boomers love it.

Ah gotcha. It's still a decent game but the type and scale (10mm airships) is probably too niche for most people to have ready models on hand.

Neat. I picked up the old starter and a decent amount of the broken infantry a while ago but hadn't really intended to use them for the in-house-rules.
New faction looks like it could have some fun parts.

Sure, you could. It'd be limited to the cadre box, but it covers every unit type you need for scenarios and can hold its own.
Though you're the first person I've seen not like the pirate trollbloods.

The biggest problem Sector AL-IX has, other than being a niche 3d print-only game, is that it is scaled at 12mm. It combine the worst of 10mm and 15mm and the benefits of neither. That's why I upscale to 15mm and it works great. Gun game, fun concept, works fairly well, even as a solo game.

You end up pretty light on points if the goal is to play 100 points (standard game size).

Max allowance of the warbeasts, the units, and the character solo, 2/3 of the non character solo and 4 of the totems (basically just buying the cadre box twice) is only 64 points. 70 if you buy an extra fugue walker and the last 2 totems.
