One of the big things that bugs me about Frieren is that it doesn't really feel "fantastical" oh sure there's swords and magic and stuff but then you get people eating parfaits in pretty modern looking settings with people dressed in what looks like fairly modern clothes. And while I don't expect full historical accuracy in my fantasy I'd like it if at least a better attempt was made.

Frieren is a huge mess design wise and it comes down to the artist simply being bad. Characters are seen wearing everything between 14th (town guards) and 20th century (Ubel). The architecture is a mess by itself where you have towns that look something between your typical mmoslop fantasytown to rural german european village from 17th century. Don't even get me started on design choices for individual characters. It becomes so bad later in the manga that you can't even differentiate the new characters from each other.

Does anyone have experience running aquatic elves? I know they're a bit underrepresented but I figured this was the thread to ask.

I would 100% appreciate artwork depicting them with a good blend of aquatic characteristics rather than blue elves with gills but beggars cant be choosers.

Been working on a science fiction setting and my "elves" are basically just slightly modified humans. It's low-scifi at the heart of it, and you have all sorts of weird stuff on the table. It's a fashion trend that sometimes border on a civilizational LARP. Still working out all the details. Very early on with everything, and I've been feeling a pressure lately to enact some whiplash to get away with everything I want to do with it.

I'd say they do if the temperature is drastic enough. Especially if they're the type adapted to a certain environment (dense woods, very cold/very hot environments and underground). I'd also say wood elven skin adapts faster while highelven and darkelven skin adapts slowest

I actually plan on doing pic related, though to a less coomer level. Nationality plays a big part in my setting, so I'm running with the idea that the western dark elf nations tend to be like old school drow, and eastern dark elves tend to be more outgoing (but still have that dominant streak).

good idea. There's always space for more nations and ethnic groups in fantasy settings since they have a tendency to turn into monolithic racial blocks that are both boring and breaks immersion.

I had an idea that all types of elves in a sci-fi settings are descendants of an extremely old elven civilization that spread in waves of colonization across the galaxy and over the millennia mutated to adapt to local conditions and turned into different elf races. By the "contemporary" era the elves are therefor widespread, but highly fragmented since their old civilization collapsed thousands of years ago

Elves are supposed to be an Elder culture, and the link from humans to archaic beings like dragons, etc. There is often a link to world-creators or the creation itself.
Drizzt is about a Drow, they are one dark type of Elf specifically. Elves in D&D are a far broader category. The series is considered a classic regardless.
