This is my favorite part in the game. You find the haemonculus who was involved with the kabal that kidnapped you and force him to tell you they have been stealing stars and kidnapping farseers for some plan. Then he says you would be crazy to destroy the safeguards because you would also be attacked by daemons. You can respond by shooting it and then murdering him. Then you can hunt him down back in the Kronos Expanse to permakill him and steal his cool mask. Why? Because fuck em that’s why

Varangian is definitely a good name that's better used for a proper combat cruiser. The funniest yet most bothersome thing to do is naming a ship, then realizing Star Wars did it first (like the Lancer Frigate and Carrack Cruiser), so a quick early google search will save headache later.

>>96793327
>>96793492
The original class name was the Turcopole, but I didn't think that was a very good name. Its meaning was too specific and wouldn't have made sense. So I went for other ranged cavalry, really making one think of cavalry skirmishers rushing in, taking their shots, and dipping back behind heavier line forces, which is what these ships are meant to do against strike craft. The bomb ketches, rocket ships, and whatnot will likely draw from a different source. Then of course there is eventually the Solarman, bringing one's thoughts to the old Indiaman. But yeah, a lot of these names are drawn from the Crusades (including the Reconquista) and the conquest of the Americas.

Using Total War and Age of Empires 2 as a reference, of course, does help...

How many ships are capable of launching an exterminatus on a world? Is it just the biggest ships that carry those weapons or only those with the authority to do so?
Anonymous No.96794117 [Report]
>>96794083
A cyclonic torpedo is a torpedo, and even a transport can launch one of those. The issue with putting exterminatus-grade weaponry on a transport is that it's a really good way to lose exterminatus-grade weaponry. Thus, they're generally only found on flagships.
They're treated a bit like nukes are treated in today's world - you need a fucking huge amount of authority to even sniff one, much less deploy it, and they're kept under armed guard or in vaults.

dark heresy, 1st ed

been away from a campaign for a while due to a new job, i've managed to get some time off for the next session however
asked the DM if I could control some enemy NPCs for this session instead of properly joining (as my PC was a psyker and was kinda broken) as it would fuck the narrative and combat balancing a bit and I don't know the current plot hook as (currently) I cannot make a regular appearance for the campaign (which should change in the new year), the DM agreed

so, how should I go about making the fight tough, but fair? I don't really want to kill anyone, accidentally or otherwise
just use actions beyond shoot/move/charge/fight? stuff like aiming, suppressive fire, parry etc

>How many ships are capable of launching an exterminatus on a world?
That depends on the method used. "Exterminatus" refers to any attack intended to eradicate all living things on a planet, rather than a specific way of a achieving that. In the 40K era, this usually means using Cyclonic Torpedoes. Any ship that with a torpedo launcher can theoretically do this, provided they can get Cyclonic torpedoes (unlikely for most factions like Rogue Traders). Other methods include Virus Bombing (popular during the Great Crusade; Virus bombs can be deployed by a variety of methods including attack craft, torpedoes, or macrocannon shells), or widespread use of Atomics (you probably don't have enough of these on your ship). For worlds that lack adequate defenses, any ship with macrocannons can theoretically carry out an Exterminatus through protracted bombardment, though this may be prohibitively time-consuming. Makeshift methods like towing asteroids onto collision courses are also possible (and also usually too time-consuming to bother with).

>shoot your macrocannons at the planet's power plant and it'll evaporate all the oxygen on the surface.
I'm not sure what kind of power plant you're referring to, but that sounds like one of those ersatz methods that only work on specific worlds with unusual conditions, which people resort to when they don't have proper Exterminatus weapons. I'd expect most planets with tech that powerful and volatile to have it protected by powerful void shields or something.

The imperial dating system is really cool and part of my beef with Indomitus is that it overwrites it with lame obnoxious bullshit. Essentially, dates begin with 'check numbers' which identify how accurate time is compared to Terra Standard, which has a check number of 0, then 'inside Sol system' is 1, then 2-5 are degrees of separation from Terra - 2 is 'direct psychic link to someone on Terra', 3 is 'connected to 2 source', up to 5 which is a connection to a connection to a connection to a connection, or four degrees of separation, from active psychic contact with Terra. 6, 7 and 8 are then non-referenced less than one year, less than ten years, and greater than ten years, respectively, while 9 is un-referenced.

So anyway, the answer is astropaths.

You can tell the time in Sector Fuckblasticus by checking for stellar drift in the Sector Fuckblasticus star charts. You cannot tell the time based on Fuckblasticus' stellar drift if you're not in Fuckblasticus.
>astropathic messages aren't instant or consistent
The imperial dating system was outlined in 3e, astropathic messages not being instant is from 5th edition. Pick the one you think ought to supersede the other and then unfuck the mess you just made. Here, I'll start:
>The Imperial dating system requires that Astropathic communication mandates an instantaneous two-way, 1:1 connection
>Astropathic communication now works like quantum entanglement comms
>Problem: this makes the setting too connected
>Solution: Astropaths can only reach so far before exploding

Not the anon you are arguing with (I'm the anon who posed the original question) but the Outcast Dead that gives astropaths a lot of screentime/attention makes it seems like an Astropathic messages aren't just etheric SMS but more ideograms coloured with all kinds of extra meaning (so much that Cryptaesthesians exist to sniff out the most subtle implications) so it would make sense if a message meant to convey a proper time/date would include how long ago it was sent.

Also we can assume the Imperium has completely accurate clocks that don't drift as long as the laws of physics still apply and they still are inside the realspace universe (not a guarantee in 40k).
Anonymous No.96803806 [Report] >>96803974

And you will compare the location of these stars to what, exactly, anon? The amount of thumbs you can shove up your ass?
In order to measure time based on stellar drift, you need a highly accurate star chart of your position, including the speed at which given stars move, and an accurate date on which it was charted which you then measure against. If you fuck off six hundred lightyears spinward, that chart is useless to you, because the chart is taken RELATIVE TO YOUR POSITION, and you have MOVED YOUR POSITION.
Not even mentioning the fact that stars move on the order of arcseconds per DECADE. Sure, I'll just set my alarm based on that, shall I?
Starmaps let you know where you are, not whether it's fucking teatime yet.
Now if you have a single iota of authenticity, examine and then address the lore implications of the imperial dating system being inherently flawed in the aforementioned manner, and if you don't, blow me.

I legitimately believe that with all the abhumans that are actually modified DAOT colonists that baseline humanity by the time of 40k doesn't really exist. The only truly 'pure' human stock is that which has either been in stasis or reverted to pre-spaceflight tech levels soon after colonization. Everyone else has been modified to either cosmetic or survival ends loooong before the Imperium came around, which is how you get shit like stupid feats of strength from ordinary humans, Catachans, the fact that random gutter women are inexplicably hot and why basically anyone named is generally attractive despite everything about the environment (radioactive, food shortages, chemical runoff) probably precluding it. One of the like actual serious problems with ship combat is that there is no way to know what you're getting into until it's too late. There's no difficulty indicator, number of ships, or anything in the world map other than a sprite of the faction you'll be fighting (and you basically have to be a 40k expert to know what those ships are from their silhouettes).

This >>96803406 is correct. In Rogue Trader mechanics terms that's probably either a Navigaton (Stellar) or a Scholastic Lore (Astromancy) test with difficulty varying based on circumstances (if you ended up about when and where you expected it's easier). You're referencing the positions and movements of known observable objects at various distances. Local stars if you're in good shape, predictable things in extremely distant places (where's the galactic core relative to this system we arrived in?) if not. You match objects with charts based on relative position and received em signatures (spectrum of light from a known star, for instance, or frequency of pulsars - things like that). If you're way off course it may take a lot of time to correctly match up what you can see with things you have charts for. In some cases it may be better to make another Warp jump and let the Navigator reorient you with the Astronomican (assuming you didn't jump to a time when it doesn't exist).

Shocking.
40k years of natural selection would lead to the same results.
But you're still wilfully ignoring the masses that are rarely shown. Vast majority of humanity is implied to be treated like shit by DAoT overlords even worse than the Imperium to waste time modifying them.

Lastly, with all the industrial and warp pollution, all it amounts to is keeping the current status quo. With the vastly reduced browns at the very best.

Fan Fire: This weapon may fire Full-Auto as a Half Action, and retains fire rate bonuses after performing a movement action. The weapon gains a +2 bonus to Ballistic Skill tests for every successful hit against a target until they are slain, and inflicts additional damage equal to the bearer's Ballistic Skill tests when scoring Righteous Fury. Yes, but it's a rare occurence. It depends strongly on the exact level of servitorization.

The top inquisitor in the Kronos Expanse was making deals with the Drukhari timesaver a c’tan shard although he dispensed of their deal when he had no use for them. You have a dangling modifier in your description of the Slaugth. As is, you're saying that the larger whole is referred to as "maggots".
Should be "...multitudes of smaller organisms, referred to as 'maggots', creating a larger whole".
Finally, "capable of regeneration" is fine (could use an enhancer, maybe), but "capable of resilience" sounds very strange to me. Consider changing to "resilient and capable of [rapid?] regeneration".

I don't use AI for my stuff. However, I have no issues with the tech itself. I am just too brainlet to learn how to use it, plus from what I've seen it doesn't have the fidelity I want. The way I do stuff differs from the base, so an AI can't make the stuff I like. So for now the kirkbride method, making up random crap, and stealing stuff from my favorite vidya is the way forward.

Yes, I've played it and no, you shouldn't. Psykers in IM don't really have many particularly impressive powers, and your action economy is shit unless you want perils 2-3 times a combat. If you absolutely must play IM for whatever reason, and worse, as a psyker, take Telekinesis and Abjure Mechanism and devote yourself to breaking weapons. If your GM lets weapons count as 'machines'. If not, take Telepathy and pick Compel, and spend your time sneaking up on people then ordering them to walk out of cover. Combustion as a minor power will do for setting most people's clothes on fire, and the range is pretty good.

To use another anon's phrasing, your 'mana bar' is tiny - most powers use 2-3 warp charge and you can hold at most your WpB. You'll generally be able to use one or two powers before you have to spend a turn purging or risk perils, and you can cop phenomena from a purge anyway. The purge is a roll on the phenomena chart with +10 per charge removed. You know how magic in fantasy 4e before the magic book was a bit rough and overcasting was stupid easy and magic darts anywhere? Well, psyker stuff in IM is as poorly considered but without the obvious exploits. You need a back up, and you need to be careful about using powers in public, because *you will be caught*. There is no sneaky psychic stuff, there is always something left behind by the retard psyker in question. Every purgation leads to a Phenomena roll that can last for something like ten minutes, and every phenomena roll can lead to a perils roll.

>If you absolutely must play IM for whatever reason,
yes, because the GM is a fucking consoomer who bought the book solely because it has just released (translated to spanish). If it was up to me I would play Dark Heresy with just a couple of fucking changes to the bad/unbalanced stuff. That said I believe that any game is fine as long as the people you play with are fine

Depressing to hear that psyker sucks so much shit compared to dark heresy. My plan was actually to play a very devout inquisitor exorcist (as in, a psyker from the inquisition) and mainly use a bolter if I need to kill, saving powers only for when its absolutely necessary.
If it gets atrocious though, is there any house rule to beg the GM to make the experience less miserable?

DH1, BC and Only War (..and a little, RT, but not really) is the only system that really did powers well. DH2 was especially bad for it, and that's what IM reminds me of. It's closer to a theme park than a talent tree. Oh, and if you're sanctioned you get double your WpB as your warp charge threshold. You still need to purge. Take Psychic Flood - you'll still have problems with warp charge, but you'll have available SL when you need them. It'll let you pump out single powers reliably and strongly. This is going to sound retarded, but try and get possessed and exorcised because tainted vessel is pretty important and that makes it free. It's almost certainly a typo, but I'm pretty sure you can also *buy* the talent. If you've played 4e, you know how rough corruption points can be and it makes you immune to mutation. Subtle Psyker's in the same book somewhere and will give you -10 to phenomena rolls.

As for homebrew: Not really. You could try a talent reducing warp charge by 1 for every turn you don't use or sustain a power, and have it not cause phenomena rolls.

As someone who is GMing IM (mainly because I wanted to get a feel for some of it's more questionable looking mechanics with actual play to see if they were as wonky as I thought) my experience with psykers has been very different. But it's only because my psyker player has gone the route of melee psyker.
As a result he's favored biomancy and divination for self-buff, and I have discovered that pretty much all buff powers have positive casting bonuses to help get enough SL to make them worth it. This has lead to him only really casting right before or at the start of combat then just using the buffs then purging out of combat which is safer. Only time we had a fucking with powers was when he tried to use I think seal wounds on a dying enemy so they could take them alive for interrogation, that resulted in a fumble and then a demon summoning, which was very funny.
I should probably try using enemy psykers more to get a better chance to test this shit and get the experiences everyone else is getting.

GM of melee psyker here, to give you an idea, while I don't have the book in front me. Iron limb(I think if not it's another biomancy power) is a +40 test, sets your str bonus to SL of the mastery test or natural whichever is better(so if you roll poorly you don't lose str bonus) and you get advantage on all WS based tests.
If your base psychic skill for this is 50 your rolling against a 90 so your probably going to get at least some str buff out of it under most rolls with the occasional low roll granting you space marine tier str bonus, but the advantage on WS is the big bonus here. While he has taken the most crits out of any party member, he also has the highest kill count.

A starting psyker isn't going to do anything but use their psychic stuff and very occasionally land a shot, and if you don't want to be hot garbage at using your powers you're going to be doing nothing but investing in it for a while. Minor powers ironically are some of the best because they average at like +10 and are pretty varied.

Biomancy averages +5 but swings between +40 and -20, divination is an avg of +17, pyromancy -8, Telekinesis +10, telepathy -7. You just don't have the willpower to do anything reliably if you don't quickly scream up the ranks of psychic mastery.

It might not matter much overall, but I will mention there is a line in the Psychic Powers chapter (specifically at the start of the minor powers section) that straight up says all psykers know the smite minor power.
I personally assumed this is another case of C7 changing stuff during development but then fucking up correcting them either in editing or some other step (I know for a fact something like this happened during development of the WFRP4 corebook such as edge case issues with ranged combat). You might be able to use that to convince your GM to let you have smite for free, freeing up the minor power options from mystic/psyker to get other stuff.

God I wish C7s proofreading/editing was better at catching this stuff, then again they probably were but then all got pulled to go work on wfrp's new corebook since that's the game line that gets all the love.

Obviously I'll have the scared pitiful voice pleading for help but players are getting so smart these days so I need a piece of bait so juicy they won't care about the hook. The voice offering a powerful/rare weapons would be preferable over PF/achievement stuff and archeotech ship parts even better (even though that makes zero fucking sense given the scenario and can't really be shoehorned in). Something completely unique and unquantifiable that you won't find in any splat book would also work but I can't think of anything.

brewfag here, something I wanna do for my in house ruleset (FFG) is make melee combat a bit more exciting and dynamic, and allow melee characters to specialise more rather than just all end up going down the lightning strike route.

My idea is to have talent trees that all represent different fighting styles, with each style having its own different skill requirements (something i do a lot in my brew is add skill requirements to various combat talents, aside from just WS/BS). Each tree will be a set of 3 main talents from T1 to T3, with maybe some sidegrade extra talents leading off them, giving the character bonuses in fighting a particular way and abilities they can use (which also come with their own downsides and risks)

I've drafted up my initial plans for what each tree will be, any ideas i can farm from you guys? Is there any similar systems or brews that are doing this?

Funny. I've been mulling a melee system for Squat brawlers and Sisters of Silence oblivion knights based on Devil May Cry combo system movesets, where you spend XP to get special moves across different styles like stinger, air trick, royal release, etc, and you link these moves together in combos (up to 3). Some moves may penalize the next move's WS test, others may boost it, some may add a quality to the next attack, and they'd all have different effects. I've tested the combo system out, and it works quite well. Now all that needs to be done is convert the moves.

I know that feel bro, its similar to piracy. Once you've gotten something that you wanted for free its extremely hard to pay for it

>slop on a real document
depends. Once again, if its a man's hobby, on a document he is releasing for free, his entire work being about writting the crunch and fluff, I'm not going to blame them for not wanting to waste time doing their own extremely bad illustrations nor paying an artist (nor for using another's art without permission). In any case its fundamental that they are honest about it, using it for stuff that's widely available (40k or D&D homebrew) and specially to also write the text is insulting

Uh... but the art wouldn't be free? I'd have to pay an artist to make it to replace the generated one? Honestly, it doesn't really scratch the itch that real art does in the same way for me, other than satisfying the part of my brain that wants to make little tweaks to things.
Honestly I think I'd agree with the other guy that I'd prefer bare text. How tf does daemonic work. Mark of the Xenos, bloodletters have 40 something toughness and 8 TB with no unnatural but daemonic (8 TB). By core daemonic is a multiplier of TB like unnatural but here it's just a fixed value. Except plaguebearers have 15 TB in the stats, with 55 toughness, unnatural x2 and daemonic (TB 10). It's not additive because bloodletters don't have TB10 and bearers would have 20, and not multiplicative, and if it was a fixed value against mundane weapons, they wouldn't have 15 TB but 10.

Afaik that's kind of like what the Eightbound are like in nu-lore but I don't read modern codexes.

Although I would add that with the Horus Heresy incarnation of the nails (i.e giving more detail than just it makes their brain crazy) those with butcher's nails are capable of agitated rest. The nails make them more like pitbulls where you wouldn't want to piss them off or engage their pray instinct rather than just lost to the nails kill crazy 24/7. They are capable of making complex plans even if they don't survive contact with the enemy and they can still give orders, regroup, rearm etc. when not already lost to the nails or between engagements. In actual combat the mental pressure builds so they have to kill usually in close combat or get lost in frenzy (or just get lost in frenzy generally) until the nails release their grip.

If you want you want to RP a world eater doing normal stuff outside of combat just have them constantly kneading their temples, suffering facial neuralgia or trying to focus their mind and visualise something to ground themselves in the moment. Occasionally or if you think they'd be more agitated than usual have them reflexively gun the motor in their chain weapon. grip something or make a comment about the nails ticking.

Khorne isn't just le crazy blood god. He is that, but he's also the god of War. He encourages martial heroism/valour/bravery as well as massacres and any kind of virtues found in battle. With that idea what I'm thinking is a more metaphysical/soteriological conception of Khornate worship which is Heraclitean, almost. Attaining a kind of dark gnosis and meta-realisation that the reality of the cosmos in 40k is War, and to embrace it and attain mastery over it is to ascend to absolute understanding.

Again that's a pretty out-there idea, but to be honest the whole 'le crazy killer' shit really sucks and gets tiring because it's so 2D. Yes there should be that for Chaos to remain a grimdark retarded nightmare, but I wish there was a bit more room also for more compelling concepts that make reasons for worshiping the Chaos gods to become more realistic.
