I don't think that it would be truly impossible, but I would expect it to at least be more difficult to get started on a stage 10+ body refining method if you had previously just used energy gathering. By not taking it. Alternately with a contract via Mastermind you define a payment system in doing services that are specific to your stage, never above, of a limited amount, with defined goals that can be achieved within of specified duration with gaps in between jobs, and that the person you make the contract with proves they are able to accept full responsibility for your debt if there are any issues or faults on their end. Even with all of that it would be a complete pain in the ass if you can't get the person you make the contract with to break the contract somehow and be responsible for it.

Tremere of the usual capacity. Sire is a little unusual, since they’ve unlocked so much sorcery, but I’ll probably be odder with my Koldunic Sorcery. I have a few Old Tzimisce clan members who I’m on friendly terms with (for a Tremere), which might help in that regard.Not many goals beyond being competent and learning sorcery. I am suprised more people arent talking about that fated shot and temptous rifts are described to be used often by DIMA agents and that DIMA is a faction with strongest cultivators on earth currently. I prefer grand risk-reward over low risk-reward grinding. I have the capital to do it; I have mastered Auspex and many sorceries and have good relationships with many powerful beings.

If I don't take the risk of Powerplay+ and Master in the Shadows+, I'd be at Favor 7. My relationship with my Sire would be as different as night and day, I would have two less sorcery ranks, and I would not have the Major Boons of two very powerful beings and consequentially not have what they would have done for me—such great benefits, how can they be gained without risk? If one wishes to obtain them without the cyoa, one will have to take risks down the line and spend a lot of time anyway.

Normally a higher stage cultivator has less and less use of low level people, but with Stand Proud you can get a use out of them, that thing that villains do for no reason you can actually get something from. I literally can't make 1 choice without being bombarded with 20 different things that I have zero context for. It's like being told to pick from 5 opaque boxes without knowing what's inside. I arrived here suddenly, my sire chancing upon & Embracing me after first abducting me after the compulsion to do so overtook them. Updated build from v2.0 to have a few more disciplines, but couldn't afford to increase them. They’re all quite useful, especially Obfuscate; I could have gained the others but Vicissitude creeps me out and Ogham is too close to Blood Sorcery for my liking. A little more combat-oriented than might be needed, but more so for self-defense and intimidation purposes than anything; as a fledgeling low-gen, it very well might be necessary. Abilities and attributes were chosen to complement my sires. The Banu Haqim Bane is quite the annoyance, but not so bad compared to most, and if I’m feeding on the deserving then it’s not so much of a loss if an exsanguinating frenzy occurs. I’m also compelled to obey the Hierarchy of 4th Gen’s & above (especially if they know my True Name), and I’m rather tasty. These essentially aren’t weaknesses at all against 99% of the people I will ever encounter, so that’s fine, and I was planning on doing my sire’s bidding anyhow. The impairments are pretty costly, but they also give worthwhile benefits so I don’t mind much; Minerva can deal with the Monstrous Visage, as I have a Major Boon on her. It’s antiquity anyway, so there’s no Masquerade for me to accidentally breach. I’m glad my sire doesn’t mind, at least. I have no idea how sects worked in antiquity, but I already rolled for it so I'm keeping the Hook. I'll either be independent, or join up with the Camarilla once they form.

Amelia can handle my mortal networks, while Dick is useful for a finger in the underworld’s pie. Contacts are just who I like; I have always enjoyed the Tzimisce & Malkavians, and the rest are just good fun. A couple of the Dark Gifts might have something to do with my sire’s acquisition of Obtenebration. I don’t know how she managed to bind a Lasombra methuselah’s soul to its skull after she drained it dry, and I’m not sure I want to. My sire also maintains an old property within the Carpathian Mountains, and the ancient library within it, which I’ve been graciously provided. Aside from the painting vampire the Chronicles aren’t that interesting, whose heartsblood I will store away instead of diablerizing, as I could eventually trade that away. The thing in the woods is probably connected to Nemen & what he wants from me. I'll be spending the Hooks from missions on learning Vicissitude and Valeren. I can rely on my sire for support during my early nights, since wealth during antiquity doesn’t translate to much.

Sire is an ancient, obsessively possessive 4th Gen, a Blood God in her own right. She clearly focused on mastering a wide selection of disciplines, and has the skills & attributes you’d expect a methuselah of this calibre to have. She’s a master schemer & social genius, and most likely only uses Presence sparingly, not that she needs it. Aside from that, she’s an Elysium owner, as well as probably incredibly terrifying in-person. For whatever reason she’s been suspected of diablerie she did not commit, but I suspect my Embrace is to some degree a part of clearing up that issue… somehow. Or perhaps it's in service of deeper machinations. The only real downside is her controlling behaviour, but that’s manageable.

I was having a difficult time deciding between Repentance Of The Beast & Antiquity Beckons, but the chance to have a head start on 90% of Kindred is a lot better than dropping a Curse by a tier. Drawbacks are good, they allow creativity and intersting combos, they also require you to think what is worth it/you can reasonably deal with, in general they add to the enjoyment of a cyoa when made well. Loot drops are used in games like these to stop turtling, by forcing players to compete over resources of common knowledge
Also add zones where combat is impossible, like a break room or a church (Obviously make sure no one can stay in them)
Also also if you are doing area objectives make sure people can acsess the area in advance to add traps
(An example of an area objective would be that on day 10 a fruit in x area will bloom purple, and whoever consumes said fruit will be healed of all injuries. or that a great and terrible machine will rise and the heart of it can be used as a bomb. or that a tomb will open with a cool sword behind all the traps) (Make sure exactly where these are is hidden, but the area is known)

I think laws like (Missing any shots, punchs, or spells results in death) or (Making a noise over 20DB results in death) would be fun, alongside the regular animal and environmental hazards
Also add a boss to one part of the map with a big reward. People love that type of thing because they can assume no one else has it and fight it whenever they want to, but are also encouraged to fight it now, and to never fight it

They’re not that interesting most of the time and especially with multiplayer CYOAs you get a lot of shitters that just ignore the drawback downsides or claim that taking a drawback = autolose.

If I do implement drawbacks, they will be bundled with specific abilities rather than giving you points. Also, since this is a tournament CYOA, it’s all about battles. This means that drawbacks have to have immediate effects in battle, but can’t be too crippling. This further increases the difficulty of adding more content.
This also doesn’t really solve the problem of having few sections.

You could add optional teammate option that you can pick from pre-made list of "companions" that could potentially make up for your weaknesses or synergize with your abilities. This could come in form of optional 2v2 mode in arena or duo mode in battle royale.

You can add enviormental factors you could spend your points on. In arena you could add options like spawning some weak minion type troops at the start or enviormental hazards that do not harm you. In battle royal you could say there is a waypoint system that lets you teleport between locations, but only if you purchase said perk.

If you have no direct combat power, Cassian, you just have to stay away. If you have persistence good support skills, are skilled at communication, and are generally good, Marie Su, as if you can get past the enforced misunderstandings her being fairly normal means reconciliation could actually be lucky for her and should be possible. If you have good endurance and attack power, Alva, just crash her bones and persist until she flees, might be possible to reconcile eventually. Lyra is another where reconciliation may be possible with a proper build, so as to help her regain her human form, if you can get through misunderstandings that result in a dragon fist flying your way.

All of them will be annoying in their own ways though, but it's generally about who you counter and how. Though like in the case of Marie Su, even if you are prepared to deal with things through dialog, expect every interaction and conflict prior to that to go to her favor even if you win.

There is no real way to have no direct combat power unless you avoid cultivating. I was talking more about the absolute minimum level of combat power such as where you go for methods that don't gain direct combat power. Like Verdant and Akashic, where your methods aren't really offering the power to punch good, or much destructive power for a while. I know this completely breaks the balance of the cyoa, but nothing stops you from using mastermind to give other people your most annoying drawbacks. Because they can't actually do any of that. In theory, a powerful enough mage could turn the universe into tapioca. But every intelligent being in the WoD (literally) shapes the universe through their beliefs, and in practice, the weight of all those other minds in the universe radically restrict what a WoD mage can actually do.

In other words, a WoD mage isn't necessarily stronger than a D&D wizard. It's just that the constraints are different. A WoD mage always has to pay attention to what local beliefs say magic can do, and how such magic "should" be invoked. And if they try for something more than that, or try to use the "wrong" spell framework for the area (faith healing in a scientific lab, or pagan rune magic in a cathedral, or . . .), the backlash can brutal. And that's assuming the spell works at all.

So while a WoD mage doesn't have to worry about levels, it's a rare occasion when they can hurl fireballs, teleport, or summon elementals. Almost no one anywhere believes such magic is possible, so it isn't.

Personally I think that taking Auxiliary Master and not taking Lost Legacy or Stores of Wealth is potentially more fun to hunt for your own resources. However it would be really difficult to make much use of it if you don't take at least some of Essence Furnace, Spliced Tree, Market Ticket, and Hunting Grounds.

I'm not saying it's stronger to skip Lost Legacy, I just think it's more fun to have to hunt down resources rather than have them from the start. Personally I've reworked my build to replace Lost Legacy with Heavenly Conqueror Foundation, however I'm still undecided between Living Forge or Machine Transcendence. I'm kind of leaning towards Machine Transcendence because it seems to rely less on specifically rare materials. At least in the earlier stages.
