Mudcore thread
This underrated and overlooked era (17th century) is ideal for mudcore.

> baroque art
> plenty of wars
> knights with guns
> age of sail & colonialism
> Spanish Inquisition
> mercenary companies
> merchants

Literally the reverse of mudcore

I know, romanesque feels more like mudcore. But it is an interesting feature of the time and it does contrast very well with bleakness; grandeur, monumental scale, dramatic scenes, optical illusions, choral chants and harpsichords. Dark Fantasy games like Dark Souls, WH40k or Blasphemous combined baroque art with dark fantasy.

30 years' war really must've felt like some apocalyptic shit to the people affected. Really good setting IMO.

Does Conan count as mudcore?
What about whatever a mythological active Ancient Greece?

I agree, helluva war. There are plenty of systems to run games in this period; 17th Century Gothic, Honor + Intrigue, LOTFP has some modules set in this Tudor England and the Civil war (in fact the default setting is England around that era), Alatrists (set mostly in Spain), 7th Sea to some extent, En Garde!, Regime Diabolique, etc. And of course you can adapt other systems to that.

>>96860685

I don't think it does. Mudcore is about grimdark settings that have a pessimistic outlook; wicked aristocrats, weak protagonists, high lethality, chances of infected wounds or dismemberment, moral greyness, etc.

Conan didn't feel like that to me. Ancient Greece is not mudcore by any means, it even has an optimistic allure at times.

Rather than mud, Bronze age/Classical Antiquity is sand. Check out the Peplum/Sword & Sandal genre for adventures in Greece and Rome (Jason & the Argonauts, The Illiad/Odyssey, Troy, 300, Gladiator, HBO Rome, Sword & Sandals, Mazes & Minotaurs, Clash of the Titans, God of War, Maciste saga, Quo Vadis?, Ben Hur, Shakespeare's Julius Caesar, Cleopatra, Bayvblon on which fame and glory are bestowed, Blood & Bronze, Let us build a tower, Mythic Vistas Testament, Total war bronze age, etc.)

I would really be interested in a game about civilians trying to survive that setting, say in central Germany 1630s. Too bad there aren't enough autists in my region to set that up.

What do you have in mind? What exactly are they trying to survive? Might wnna check out Darklands, set in Holy Roman Empire, 15th century IIRC

That sounds interesting, need to check it out. The scenario I have in mind is a bunch of civilians trying to survive in an area contested by protestants and catholics, with internal tensions within the group one might expect in such a setting. Combat would be last resort, but definitely an option, as long as the group works together and gangs up on one or two soldiers. They would have no real chance fighting a squad of hardened soldiers, for example.
Anonymous No.96861356 [Report] >>96861420
>>96861311

Which side would the characters be in and what is their goal apart from surviving?

I'd advise you to go for a more swashbuckling kind of adventure with courtly intrigue, wars make bad rpg sessions

Devil's advocate:
The higher the idealism, the greater the contrast with the 'reality'. Having brightly colored infantry and shining armored knights before battle, and then dump a whole bunch of mud on them during the battle isn't a contradiction. It's a feature.

I'm leaning more into survival horror-type of play, with encounters that migh end up really bad if the players aren't careful. The group has a starting point and a place they want to go, but need to navigate the political and religious landscape in order to survive and get there.

My inspiration is that civilians did live between the frontlines and a lot of Swedish soldiers, for example, married German women and founded families in the region, only for the soldiers to die or return to their families back home, while the ones who stayed had to find a way to blend in. A lot of nobodies made their fortunes, while a lot of noble houses faded away. The world was upended for people of the era, but they still managed to live afterwards. It really is an interesting setting to navigate.

I think you're still too abstract for a game, players need concrete, specific goals and stories to relate and develop, otherwise they'll lose interest.

>This underrated and overlooked era
As an American it's only overlooked because the British colonies were still learning how to farm corn at the time, when I was in Germany it was one of the biggest deals in their history. The Thirty Years War only defined what a country was to them, and defined which German states had sustainable futures. There's a reason that was the basis for the de-facto main characters in WHFB lore and RPGs.

The last battle of the English Civil War took place in America; Battle of the Severn. Both the 30 Years War and 80 Years War had battles that took place in the Americas. There was a decent chunk of war and skirmishes that took place in the Americas at the time.
