Anyone knows some good instructional video on glazing? I'm trying to figure out what I'm doing wrong but just entering "glazing" in YT search mostly shows "influencers" stuff with memes, "talking heads" (aka not showing actual work, just talking about it) and actual painting on 2-3x speed.

Thank you kind bastard.

Do you prefer TTC or Citadel paints? In the past I've noticed metallics don't always mix well with other metallics (I was probably using older Citadel formula paints at that time). Your recipe calls for mixing metallics. Does either TTC/Citadel have better mixing qualities (or other factors you prefer)?

Any significant difference in using satin varnish instead of gloss varnish to prep a model for oil weathering?
Anonymous No.96867289 [Report] >>96867469

If satin is all you have, by all means use satin.
Anonymous No.96867366 [Report] >>96867469
>>96867256
The oils will tend to stain a bit more, but in return you'll have less headaches about beading up and such. Gloss is really more if you're only interested in panel lining and maybe a pin wash, with satin otherwise being the default "base" for weathering. Or at leats that's how it seems to be over on the scale model side of things.

TTC, they're a bit pricier though. Citadel metallics are fine too honestly, I wouldn't get new paints if you still have some of these. Duncan's just cover a bit better and have a somewhat nicer finish I feel. Plus they don't come in those awful pots. Dragon's Gold and Platinum Crown look VERY similar to Retributor Armor and Canoptek Alloy, just a bit better quality. I've never owned Liberator Gold, judging by Stahlys chart Glistening Gold is a bit warmer but it shouldn't make much of a difference really. Don't know what you were using but I've mixed these two brands with no issues.

as a general rule, set the iso to the minimum, you already have a lot of light so adjust exposure by lowering shutter speed and use the timer, set quality and resolution to max and lowest jpg compression, or shoot raw and render with lightroom but that's too much work

I think it's reasonable realistic for a splash. Picrel is what a tank looks like driving through similar water for example vs your pic.

The biggest issue I think is that I came up with the idea and executed it without realizing this splash effect really only makes sense if it was on the forward foot landing, it makes less sense being on the back foot at the end of the stride. I think it still gets the point across but it's a little less natural than I want.

Was there a contrast slider you gave a good, hard kick into the stratosphere, or is your phone camera's dynamic range just that bad? Combined with the resolution I'm almost feeling nostalgic here, a callback to turn of the century webcams... At least depth of focus seems to cover the entire mini, but then again, given the sensor size in phone cameras that may have kinda given itself.
Now if this is the contrast as-shot then I guess contrast bracketing will be in order. Ie take photo that's bright enough that all the base rim and bolter aren't just pure, featureless black, and one that's dark enough that we actually see some shape in the face as such as well instead of it all washing out into mostly just white, maybe a few in between as well if necessary, and then find a program that adds it all together to an image that doesn’t go from black to white quite so abruptly as this one. Also, see if you can get at leats a few pixels more out of things. If moving closer to make that happens kills the depth of field then there's also focus bracketing...
Or at leats this is what I'm thinking based on just the photo alone. If you have the aperture size, shutter speed, and some details on what exactly you did to the photo afterwards that might allow me or someone else to come up with some better advice.

I could get a number of them, but in the thirty or so years I've been painting I've never really seen the point. Just buy the specific paints you're going to use, instead of thinking you save money by buying some paints you'll use and some you probably won't make any real use of. And even as you build up to having perhaps just as many paints as one of those big boxes you probably won't want to have it all from one single maker anyway.

You mean like liquid mask? Yeah I have it and used it a few times. It does exactly what it sounds like it does. Just make sure that the surface you put it on is nice and dry and has good adhesion to its primer/material, so that when you remove the mask it doesn't take the paint layers under it with it. But besides that straight forward to use, just brush some on the surface and let it dry. Do you painting over/around it, then peel it off like you would tape. You will probably want tweezers to grab it with to make that easier but it should come off in a single piece if you applied it correctly. Smells horrible though before it dries.

First of all you definitely want to clean the model properly before painting, I can see some mold bits still attached, get ride of those with a hobby knife and a file.
Paint is quite thick in some areas, thin your paints. I know painting large flat areas with a brush is not easy at all but you could make it easier on yourself using stuff like egg sponges.

Once you correct those mistakes it's pretty much about getting better at shading, highlighting etc. The model as it is is perfectly fine for tabletop standards, but it's quite uninteresting, you said you still have to decal it which is fine, but you could give it more attention ex creating more contrast on the metallics with deeper washes and highlights, painting the rivets.

Again your model is more than fine for a beginner and you took a pic with some brutal lighting which is quite brave, just trying to give you some constructive criticism.

The one important thing for a proper grisaille is the tonal transitions, the mix of greys.
You only have a mid grey and white there, which gives the whole thing a very limited range of colour. I'd say, at a minimum, you'd need black, white and two grey midtones to get a more interesting look and better tonal contrast.
Now, dont' be discouraged, you're getting somewhere, but you also need to go darker as you go lighter in your tones.

You don't need a complete paint range sort of set box when starting out. Even as a veteran those sets are usually overkill and you won't use everything. Get one of the smaller general use starter sets with a basic range of colours and metallics in it. That should cover you enough for general use without being short some general colour, and a limited palette will push you to get use to mixing.

I'll add on to what a lot of anons have already said. I started with full sets of vallejo and citadel paints and I haven't really used most of them. You don't even need specifically branded miniature paints unless it's a color you're looking for you can just get liquitex or golden acrylics from the art supply store they are the same thing, come in bigger bottles and are cheaper

Pretty sure those are enamels if they were coming in glass bottles. Which generally are something you use for their durability on something that is going to get handled roughly or exposed to the elements. For the purposes of tabletop models acrylics or oils is generally what you want. Though there are some enamel based products which is usually for weathering or a similar effect.

Not the sort of durability that you use enamels for. As in it is completely overkill. And similar to oils enamels require their own sort of workflow and thinners etc. No one is saying you can't use them, just that acrylics will cover general tabletop use, has more options available, and will overall be easier to work with.

Stepping down to 15mm for the first time. Don't think it went too badly. Getting the camera to focus on multiple objects this small, on the other hand, is a nightmare; focus stacking didn't work, and getting the camera distant enough for it to "focus" normally covers it in AI smoothing bullshit even though OpenCamera allegedly disables that. So this was the best of a bad bunch.

The best I've managed so far is a q-tip applying a lot of pressure or scratching at it with a toothpick. Is there a better tool I can try or maybe a stronger solvent would loosen it more? Both are top tier, either way.

If you want to try a nicer synthetic than blick has two that I like. Blick scholastic wonder white are white taklon synthetics for about $2 - $3 a piece. Nice snap, softer than gold taklon, will hold a point for a good amount of time. I also like their princeton velvetouch synthetics, about $5 per brush and a little firmer than the white taklon, behaves closer to a natural hair brush and will last for a while with care and cleaning.

in a pinch even greenstuffworld silver line is good

What's your preferred brush type/size for getting down a decently fast base coat? Most of my "ok" synthetic brushes have fuck all for a belly, even the biggest ones I have. Would I be better off using a small flat or philbert style brush? Like the shape of a Citadel M base.

Really just move up to a higher quality synthetic set. Your skill level probably isn't at a point where you need to get a super nice sable brush, but I'm guessing you're being held back by dirt cheap brushes. I got this set a couple years ago and they're pretty good brushes and give you a good variety. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0C3R71SHZ
