How helpful should NPCS be? Should they be helpful advisors or just give really cryptic useless shit? Is it okay to have NPCs give bad information just to fuck with the players or will that make them distrust NPCs too much?
>>96876165 (OP)
>TQ
It should reflect what the NPCs would reasonably know and would want to tell the party.
A friendly NPC in some random town should give good helpful info while a hostile NPC in enemy territory may give bad info.

Is 5e a good system to make a 1-10 adventure path for now? I originally made it for Pathfinder for my group and I realized my campaign would actually be a decent adventure path, with a timeline of events and I already ran it so I know what to change and adjust. But would it be better to convert it to 5e? I know 5e. I know Pathfinder 1e. I don't know Pathfinder 2e but if it's way better then it might be worth learning to convert this. I just want to publish my adventure and have it do as well as possible.

I'm thinking of ways to adapt/customise Lost Mine of Phandelver.
There is an old wall around the town, but some of the farms have grown beyond the remains of the wall. I had thought that Halia Thornton was sponsoring the repair of the wall, but if it's incomplete, would it be worth repairing?
The Redbrands don't hassle Halia, even though she's probably one of the wealthiest/most influential citizens in town. I guess she's likely to have a couple of guards with her, to discourage them? But she'd be reluctant to lend them to someone to help deal with the Redbrands as she needs them for security.
There is a smithy, but the blacksmith is not a key NPC. Should I make them a middle-aged human male/female dwarf/teenage female halfling/other?
What minor side-quest could the smith offer?
I suppose there would also be a small farrier's stable nearby where horses could be bought/rented?
How often would travelling merchants visit the town? (In case the PCs want anything that the local shops couldn't supply easily). What other kind of travellers (quest hooks) might turn up?
What about messenger services? Would there be a (semi)regular courier or would letters be entrusted to passing caravans?
What are your takes on the new Circle Casting rules?
I think they're cool thematically/narratively, but the Expand, Prolong, and occasionally the Distribute options seem really powerful and easily performed without much issue.

It's basically just copying Ritual casting from PF2E, but in a worse way. In PF2E, it's used to cast spells without using any spell slots and to be able to cast spells you might not normally have access to by using collective effort, and spending time instead of slots.

I hate the weird "sidegrade nerf" they did to Divine Smite.
Getting one free cast a day that never scales seems really doesnt feel like a fair trade for not being able to Smite as an Opportunity Attack, especially since you're a front liner.
Maybe the free Find Steed and Abjure Foes makes up for it in the end but that's so disappointing.

I think that 2014 divine smite put the paladin in your average group, who probably has 2-3 encounters between long rests, pretty solidly ahead of the other martials in damage output. It doesn't help that paladins already tend to rock high AC and have good saves as a product of their aura. At the end of the day, it feels more of not knowing what to do for the other martials to bring them closer to paladins, so they brought the paladins closer.

I initially thought that the secondary casters required concentration to assist in that Magic Action. Turns out that's only if the spell has a 1-minute or longer casting time. So with a Wizard and a Cleric, they could go:
>Wizard: I want to have a 1-hour-long Greater Invisibility spell. Cleric, you okay with expending a 1st-level spell slot to help me with that?
>Cleric: Sure, as long as you're okay with expending a 1st-level spell slot to prolong this 3rd-level Bless to the party for 1 hour.
>Wizard: Deal!
They can simply do this out of combat in like 12 seconds.

Very silly and senseless rules. If more magic = those effects, then why can none of that be achievable by up-casting? I'll happily let two players cast the same spell cooperatively, it'll result in the spell level increasing and doing whatever the fuck happens when you up-cast that particular spell. So much complexity for so little depth, horrible game design.

>2024, 5.5 Edition
Backstory time. Our table has had a long-time player ask to be the DM for the first time. They're brand new and running their own custom campaign. I’m not in love with their story telling but they’re trying and I’m all for it, but they suck at balancing combat. Both our normal DM and I have given advice, but they’re more stubborn than a Modron. Our fights are either a complete joke or a borderline TPK with no in between.
>FOURTEEN Giant Rats all at once when we were level one as a party of four.
>Not spaced out. All at once in a cramped room. There were more rats than empty tiles.
>Next fight was three Goblins for an entire adventuring day.
>Cakewalk or chaos.
They really don’t seem to get the multiple encounters per day mantra and have been dumping everything at us all at once. They’re trying to improve, but we’re now level 5 and my druid has become the victim of this pendulum of imbalance.
He’s actually trying to use a lot of custom lore so Intelligence skills aren’t completely useless and he’s added a decent bit of social challenges in urban environments. He’s using a mega city on a newly discovered continent and blah blah blah. He is keeping us massively gold and item starved. The party has about 2-3 magic items between the entire group.
We currently have have:
>Fiend Warlock playing decently optimized
>Bladesinger Wizard who is going extremely melee focused as a tank for some reason
>Thief Rogue played by a brand new player who is learning the ropes.
>My Druid’s incinerated corpse, after the Warlock was possessed and fireballed.
>>96881952
Our DM knew he fucked up with the fight and has been debating a free 'Your druid somehow survived' but myself and another player expressed we'd prefer to play ball and do something new. He's been waffling but finally made his decision. Now I've got about 3 hours before the session (he just decided) to finalize a build.
I now need to make a new character going off of 2024 core rules + most D&D Beyond content (They insist). 1 free general feat at level 1, multiclass restrictions apply.
But I’m at a loss for what to make. I want to make something that can survive his learning pains without being sadistic to him as a new DM. Any suggestions?
Otherwise I’m debating on Rogue (1) > Knowledge Cleric (X) and grabbing Rogue (2) after Cleric (5) for a combination of Spirit Guardian movement and skill monkey, but I’m also open to ideas.
I feel like I need to throw something AoE centric because the DM keeps adding too way too many enemy combatants and mooks who do decent damage but have low health.
DM has expressed he'd rather see a new class (Not Druid) and our Bladesinger doesn't want another Wizard in the party.

Knowledge Cleric already gives you expertise in two Int skills, and as long as you pick things that the Bladesinger Wizard doesn't already have, then it should be covered well enough in terms of lore.
You could take Thaumaturge to help with that more, although that means giving up Heavy Armor.
Spirit Guardians should do a decent job of helping against hordes of enemies. May want to grab War Caster or Resilient Con for the sake of concentration. Word of Radiance also might not be a bad cantrip in those contexts.
Taking Magic Initiate so you can get Shield could also be a strong choice, since then you can better weather an assault by all those rats and survive to ensure you get off a bigger AoE spell.
>>96882117
Our resident Bladesinger only picked up Arcana. Both our Thief and Warlock dumped Int, so it left Religion, History, and Nature open. I'll probably just settle for the Knowledge Cleric's base expertise and give up on Rogue though, so thanks for the advice.
>Thaumaturge
I had the same thought. It'll sting to give up Heavy Armor, but Dex is better anyway. I was already going to dump Str if I went Rogue (2).
>War Caster and Resilient
War Caster was going to be my free level 1 and I was considering +2 Wis or Resilient with my level 4.
>Magic Initiate Shield
Trust me, I planned on it. I had it on my Druid too.
Any other combinations you could think of for this party comp or suggestions? Otherwise it sounds like I'll just go Mono Knowledge Cleric.
>>96881952
>>96881973
If all you want is to survive, Barbarian is great at that, plus it looks like your party is missing some damage. Kalashtar is a great race (species now I guess) for that class since they get advantage on Wis saves which are well known to fuck barbarians up, but if you're PHB only for species then Gnome will do that same thing, but Gnomes are cringe. Halberd's cleave property will also get a lot of value if the DM is throwing way too much at you, so that's the weapon I would recommend you build toward, and don't worry, small character can use heavy weapons just fine in 2024e.
As for actually strategizing around way too many enemies, I recommend going Valor Bard. Hypnotic Pattern will shut down a lot of enemies at once and seriously eat into the DM's action economy, plus you'll have medium armor proficiency to keep yourself safe. For feats I recommend Resilient (CON) at first level to boost your HP and saves, War Caster is fine too but Resilient is the more defensive of that two and I would prioritize that heavily in this context. At 4th I would take Defensive Duelist for Temu Shield, same reasoning.
>>96882144
Not every skill need to be covered, the wizard will have lots of INT to get by with. Focus on making your character to their strengths, that will give you win conditions to play towards. Focusing on your party's weaknesses isn't always a bad thing, but having strengths is always more important than not having weaknesses.
>>96882202
Barbarian is great for soaking up damage but I'd have gone for Paladin for the party wide save bonuses. But I figured it would be better to either CC or AoE down the mobs they're overusing.
>Races
PHB only or I'd be using Satyr for the Magic Resistance.
>Valor Bard
This was actually an option I had considered before trying to include some Skill Monkey in the build. I was going to do Fighter (1) > Valor if I did it for the weapon masteries and Con proficiency if I did, though, but once again it slows down caster progression. Not only that but it pushes Extra Attack + Cantrip even further away.

You don't need weapon masteries on Valor bard, you're a full caster. What do you want weapon masteries for anyway? Vex on your rapier, when you're going to use your action to heal next turn anyway? Nick on your scimitar, when you should be using True Strike and it won't even activate? The only reason to ever dip on a full caster is for armor proficiency, but Valor bard already has that. If you're going to pick Bard or pick Cleric, either way, just go full class.

Wouldn't most be using their Bonus Action for this via Healing Word? Why not continue to attack?
>Nick, on your scimitar, when you should be using True Strike, and it won't even activate?
Valor Bards get to cast Cantrips with their Extra Attack, so they can use Nick alongside using True Strike. In fact, they might be one of the best classes at using Nick due to having access ti Conjure Minor Elementals or Spirit Shroud. More attacks boost those spells

Not at 5 they can't, and while that build will in fact do a lot of damage, being overwhelmed by low power mobs means defensive play is much better. Having +2 AC from a shield won't mean shit when a Giant with +16 to hit is swinging at you, but when 8 different things with +5 to hit are swinging at you that +2 to AC is going to significantly reduce your expected time to die.
Also, even if you were going for a CME focus build eventually, that is a high level spell and you would absolutely not want to delay it by multi-classing, just use your bonus action for the two-weapon fighting attack and call it good.

Just take the parts you like. The best game mode is whatever is the most fun. For the most part, I accept 5.5e's limitations, while also having a system for crafting, combat, and RP I like.
I offer my 2014 and 2024 players the following:
>**Paladin's Smite.** Once per turn when you hit a creature and do not cause the attack to deal additional damage from a "Smite" spell or effect, you can use your Divine Smite feature on that attack.
>You can use your Divine Smite feature without expending a spell slot as if you had expended a first-level slot. The effective level increases when you gain additional levels in this class to 2nd level at Paladin level 5, 3rd at Paladin level 9, 4th at Paladin level 13 and 5th at Paladin level 17.
>**Divine Smite.** (as 2014)
One smite per turn, doesn't cost a BA, doesn't stack with spells/Eldritch Smite, can use on opp. attack, free use which scales.

A 4th-level Earth Tremor with Augment is really funny. With 6 secondary casters (Who do not need to expend a spell slot), that's a 5280-foot grounded emanation. It doesn't damage objects or structures, but it does have a chance of harming creatures, so if you cast this in like a village or small town, you'd probably kill most people and animals there if you're lucky, while also causing massive difficult terrain.
Augment a Dimension Door to 1500 Feet! The secondary caster doesn't even have to expend a slot for it; they could just hitch a boosted teleport ride! I'm unsure how Distant Spell Metamagic works here. Idk if you double the spell's range after or before Augment is taken into effect. If it's before, that's a 2000-foot teleport, if it's after 3000-feet!
It's crazy that you can do this without having the secondary caster have to use concentration or expend a spell slot- you just gotta be able to get a turn before the primary caster loses concentration.

Distribute can be used with the Summon X spells out of combat to effectively have multiple Summons going at once. You can offset the concentration to another ally caster, then cast the Summon spell again for you/another ally to Concentrate on. I don't know if that's worth the cost, but since the spells last 1 Hour and doesn't cost the ally any spell slot, I could see it actually kinda working.

Way too powerful. I've got my own set of overhauled rules changes + Classes for 2024 and I took it and nerfed some of the more broken options. The Secondary Casters must also have the spell being cast prepared or in their spellbook, and use a slot of the same level as the Primary Caster's slot to participate, among other changes.
The concept? Great, fun, flavorful. The execution? Poor. I have no clue how this got out of playtesting in its current state.
But hey, the new UA glazes monks more so at least they're doing something right after gutting purple dragon knight into a dogshit useless subclass.
>WAHHH THAT ISNT WHAT A PURPLE DRAGON KNIGHT IS!

Irori, Master of Masters, is the god of enlightenment, self-perfection, knowledge, healing, and inner strength. His followers claim that he was once a mortal who achieved absolute physical and mental perfection and thus attained divinity of his own volition. He is one of the core gods of, if not the most powerful deity of, the Vudran pantheon but is also worshiped widely in Tian Xia and has a growing following in the Inner Sea region as well.

I tweaked it as follows:
>Starts at 2d8, +1d8 vs fiends/undead
>Increases by +1d8 at levels 5/9/13/17, when you get new spell levels
>2/3/4/5/6 Uses at levels 2/5/9/13/17, per long rest.
>Works on Unarmed Strikes or Melee Weapons
>Can be used Once per Round
>Table that lets you burn a spell slot of a certain level depending on your Paladin Level and the power of the smite at that level, from slots 1-5
Ranger had the same change to Hunter's mark.
>Starts at 1d6, increases to d8/d10/d12/2d8 at levels 5/9/13/17.
>2/3/4/5/6 Uses at levels 2/5/9/13/17, per long rest.
>Works on Unarmed Strikes or weapons
>Can be used Once per Round, damage can be applied once per round
>Bonus Action to apply, no concentration but can be applied to only one target at a time, if you would apply it to a new target it ends on the first.
>Keeps the advantage on checks against the target.
>10 minute duration
>Ends if 10 minutes pass, you end it for free, or target is reduced to 0 HP
>If it ends via 0 HP, you can pop a reaction to swap it to another target without burning another use
>Range 90 feet
>Table that lets you burn a spell slot of a certain level depending on your Ranger Level and the power of the smite at that level, from slots 1-5
Mind, these are part of a sweeping suite of other changes I've called my Unchained Rules/Classes, referencing older stuff from 3.PF1e in name. Progression is different, features are mostly different with lots of new ones (including Martial Strikes, which are just aoe powers from 4e for the most part tweaked to work in 5e).

What are some OP combos you can think up or have seen for Augment?
Dimension Door, Thunder Step, Vortex Warp, and Earth Tremor is all I can really think up. So many spells require line of sight and 1000+ feet if really big, it's unlikely you could take advantage of that. This is all out of combat, too. In combat, it's tricky to use this mechanic.
For the other options I got:
Distribute (Offset concentration to someone else): Doesn't require spell slots from Secondaries
-Out of Combat: Summon X (Such as Fey, Dragon, Celestial, Fiend, etc), Danse Macabre, and Pre-Combat Buff Spells.
-In Combat: Wall Spells and Damage over Time Spells
Expand (Increase radius, emanation, cube, or width of spell by 10 feet per secondary): Does require at least a 1st-level spell slot from Secondaries
-Out of Combat: Pre-Combat Emanation Spells
-In Combat: All Action cast time Emanation Spells and AOE Control Spells- Wall of Force?
Prolong (Increase the duration of the spell by 1 Hour with one secondary or 8 Hours with four secondaries, or 24 Hours with seven secondaries.): Does require at least a 1st-level spell slot from Secondaries
-Out of Combat: All Action cast time Single Target/Mass/Self 1 or 10 Minute buff/emanation spells (Bless, Blink, Blur, Fly, Giant Insect, Haste, Conjure Minor Elementals, Conjure Woodland Beings, Conjure Celestial, Aura of Vitality, Greater Invisibility, Spirit Guardians, Mirror Image, etc), Delayed Blast Fireball, Illusory Dragon
-In Combat: Prismatic Wall

This was just a failure in development, that's all. All three of the dropped ones are mostly ok and could even be used straight. The one with extra attack is probably a bit too good when combined with paladin (for a 5.0 game). More work would be needed to play them in 5.5.
As for fiendish and fey, I really do think these would be at cross paths with warlocks. They would certainly not be impossible though.

Could you not just re-flavor this feat into something else? Tie it to a different faction relevant to the setting you're playing in? Or even just rename both into generic names?
>Zhentarim Ruffian---> Ruffian
>Zhentarim Tactics---> Ruffian Tactics
Nothing stops a character from getting an Origin Feat as an ASI or from Lessons of the First Ones. So technically you don't have to have a background as a Zhentarim to get access to it!

Only no games care about subclasses. if you're in a game, you probably ALREADY have a subclass, and are looking for other options to customize your character or increase their power.
each book should be coming up with new FEATS to change how the game works and interactractions players can do.

No-games is not the same as caring about future games. You can desire more options than what you presently use in a game, especially if you aren't happy with the ones present. Plus, people like to make back-up characters.
Having more feats is important, but subclasses contribute more overall features to a character and are important for flavoring your options.

Am I reading that wrong, or does that theoretically give you unlimited opportunity attacks? It doesn't say you can make an opportunity attack as a reaction after being hit (which would limit it to one reaction per turn), but just that if they attack you, you get to opportunity attack them, no reaction spending needed.
Surely that is not the rule as intended?

The most insane campaign I was in had 2 blatant self inserts, 1 unforgivably evil murder hobo (one of the DM favorites), and a DM that was a massive control freak and told multiple people that if they wanted to be a "control freak" (i.e., suggest maybe killing players as a story death at level 4 is retarded) that they should DM their own campaign.
The self inserts were ironically some of the least bad parts. It's sort of expected every player WILL have a self insert in some form sooner or later, and every character will reflect the player in some way.

How would you guys characterize Acererak? I was unironically thinking of something like picrel. Currently running Tomb of Annihilation and I was thinking of having him be pretty nonchalant about his whole evil plan, in the sense that it's just one of 50+ others that he's managing at the same time. He'd throw almost comedic jabs and make fun of the whole absurdity of the party actually having survived the dungeon, considering how much of a power difference there is between him and the party. But I'm afraid that having the big climactic battle being against a guy who doesn't seem to give much of a fuck about what happens might be kinda deflating? I also didn't really wanna make him another stereotypical evil lich. Since there's two of those in the campaign already.

The way I tend to characterize entities on that level is brutal, direct, and efficient application of power. No pointless torture, no disproportionate punishment of subordinates, and no "sending progressively stronger mooks to deal with a problem that could have been solved if you just sent the strongest one in the first place". When he deems it worth his time to act, he does so to his utmost. But it may not always be worth it to him, even when it seems of utmost significance to those beneath him.
Que-sera-cerak has invested a certain degree of time and effort into his current plan and he'll defend that to an extent, but you have to know when to cut your losses and move on to the next scheme. He might even congratulate the heroes, noting that he'll factor in their particular strengths for next time, but he wouldn't stick around out of spite. After all, being able to execute on his other projects is more important than the loss of this one.
You are being made to create the shaman/spirit shaman as it's own unique class for 5e how do you do it?
>>96900649
Set it up with Warlock style casting with a Druid spell list, but in place of Invocations you've got Barbarian style totems that tend to offer more physical benefits instead of extra spells.
>>96900649
The two options are some type of fullcaster (
>>96900680 already pointed out warlock is a good match for this) or a half caster. Regardless, the base class spell list should be anemic and each subclass should fill it out very nicely.
>>96899878
>>96900105
Just to get this out of the way, no, they have virtually nothing to do with level 21+ (in the vein of D&D 4e's epic destinies, which offered features at 21, 24, 26, and 30, plus an immortality quest), and they are only tangentially related to epic boon feats.
The Adventures in Faerûn epic destiny rules are essentially just "Talk to your DM and figure out how to flavor your character background and feat progression in a cool way, and maybe even some magic items and other miscellaneous rewards."
Notably, the "heir to the throne" example has the character be coronated at level 11, but be convinced by a magical vision to abdicate at level 17. That seems like a letdown.
What do people here think of them?

definitely needs to have a totem mechanic and what
>>96900680 said is interesting. Maybe make them a half caster with a focus on melee so that its general gameplay idea is using totems to buff itself and any other allies to make dealing with you harder with AC or health increases, making you hit harder through adding things like prof. bonuses to damage, or making enemies weaker. Subclasses could lean into other aspects harder. A lightning based shaman where you add onto spell casting making you a blaster caster of sorts, like adding lightning blot and thunder wave and making them consistent or higher damage. Could also do things like chaining lighting melee attacks so it doesn't abandon melee entirely. Maybe one based on totem spamming with buffs and debuffs in AOEs, make the AOEs bigger, making it so you can place more then one totem at a time at later levels. Spell list could add obvious things like bane and bless, maybe barkskin if it isn't already there. and final one could lead into the taboo I guess you could call it and focus on melee by using tales of wendigos and maybe transforming into something wendigo like giving you melee buffs and protections. The warlock style casting idea is cool and could work really well while still keeping it a half caster though it would probably need to be tested with both versions to see what would fit best.

Including a few more clearly signaled targets of theft might be the better option. Instances where there's low risk of getting caught that you can put out there in order to let them do their thing.
That pairs with
>>96901118 though, where you want to have more immediate consequences for more high-risk thefts. To avoid derailing, make it so the consequence isn't that the town guard sends waves of men to capture a single pickpocket.
Having whoever they were stealing from (or a bodyguard) beat them up is the simplest, though there is a risk there that the rest of the party will decide to escalate.
Something you could probably do but will only work once is have the stolen item be cursed, or have the victim of the theft be a Hag or some other disguised monster that could hinder the thief in supernatural ways regardless of whether they were successful.
You could even work plot hooks into it, where stealing a pouch might have some job offer or a coded message or whatever other sinister object helps push things along.

The best part was that I managed to keep the game going with minimal interruption and kept the players engaged. I definitely fucked up a few things but I took notes and will prepare better for next time. As far as specific moments go, I decided to let my players Cleave through enemies on kills after my Fighter asked if he could throw his javelin through one rat into another. I told him he could, then described how he made the Rat version of Human Centipede as the momentum from the first rat carried its ass into the second rat's face.
To be honest, I've got enough on my plate without trying to play a character too. I think letting them spend some of the money they earned in the one shot on potions and gear before setting out is probably the best way to go.

talk frankly with the player about how to work this into the campaign without it derailing things, cause left unchecked it inevitably will. depends on your campaign of course but 'plotting to steal key item' sounds like it would be more fun for everyone than 'plotting to steal random tchotchke the dm mentioned in passing'. if they're not trying to be disruptive it should be fine, and gives you potential hooks for both complications and scenarios.

For all the players know he might have been in the bath or the lich equivalent to a bath when his necrophone beeped at him that his experiment had been interrupted.
The book also does say that if the party does beat him, he shrugs and moves on to something else once he respawns, wait for time to kill off his foes, and then ruins the lives for their descendants for all eternity just for shits and giggles and petty amusement/revenge.

>Last Stand. You have Advantage on attack rolls while Bloodied.
Found this feat in Heroes of Faerun. It's sort of locked behind an Origin feat but also not really since martial proficiency can replace the Rook origin one, but is it generally worth taking? Advantage on all attack rolls while bloodied, and a way to feed temporary hp to somebody.
Probably not that good for a Samurai Fighter (what I'm playing at the moment) because Fighting Spirit exists, but it doesn't look terrible either for some other builds. Just a fucking shame some of the other 4+ feats have the origin as a prerequisite and don't have an alternative prerequisite you can use.

As others have said, you can try and work thievery into story progression by making things that maybe you didn't originally intend to be thievable thievable. Some sort of corrective (getting beaten up) that doesn't derail the story might also cause them to second guess constant theft.
It also sounds like you're only on session 1 or 2? Hopefully they'll mellow out slightly. I think sometimes when people come into the game they have a chaotic or evil character in mind but then the act of playing calms them down because they see, consciously or not, that running around creating havoc will make it a bad time for the other people they're playing with (including the DM). If there's no sign of this happening on its own over time, then you'll need to talk to the player about how to productively channel their theiving impulses.

>Consequences for stealing
Yes, I mentioned this to them (which is why I think the ended up thinking twice before trying to steal stuff). Though I both understand & agree that setting up the right expectative is important, I don't want it to cost them the adventure because that will just derail too much stuff for me
Long story short, I will teach them a lesson if needed, but I rather not need to
>>96901342
>Including a few more clearly signaled targets of theft might be the better option
Definitely! I just wasn't prepared for it for session 1 (I didn't even know that player was rolling a rogue). I will try to keep that in mind... maybe more proactively mention targets worth of stealing (so far, the group is actively scanning for targets... but maybe if I take upon myself to point them out, they might stop looking for targets in places I don't want them to)
>Having whoever they were stealing from (or a bodyguard) beat them up is the simplest
Problem I got caught up in is that their first target in mind was the quest giver... which would do exactly what you said but would also retract the quest (thus, my whole session planning would go to waste)
>>96902052
>talk frankly with the player
Yeah I was thinking about it! I plan on telling her that stealing stuff in their (small) hometown is not that great of an idea, but it might be easier to get away in a capital, and also that I will keep that in mind during the planning for future sessions

I think this is a good enough sign that they won't get too crazy with it, since they clearly took the prospect of getting caught or reported seriously.
Introducing other more viable targets should be enough in that case, particularly those that have less consequence/risk. As long as they understand that they need to not piss off the people they're working for or land on a most wanted list.

Right now my plan is to make a list of 15~20 items (a good chunk of them consumable) to let them choose if they want to buy things, with the more permanent items costing almost the party's entire budget
They are level 1~2
>>96904574
Apologies I missed you on my reply! I hadn't reloaded the page in a while...
>you can try and work thievery into story progression
Definitely! I might try to weave that into the next quest or so. Too bad though that when I asked the to choose their quest giver, they went with the Merchant and not the Guild of Thieves (the latter would make it way easier to put her skill to take things away more useful for the plot)
>It also sounds like you're only on session 1 or 2?
Yes, that was session 1 (both for the campaign as well as for the player, her first time playing D&D)
I think you are right, this need to stealing everything will probably tone down as the party gets attached to the town/npcs and get more quest oriented. For instance, on session 1 the rogue herself rolled 20 on a charisma check with the owner of the tavern, and I mentioned she made a friend/ally, so that alone might thwart the party from trying to steal stuff in the tavern
I'm hoping the next quest will take them to the capital, so I might signal (or straightforwardly tell) her that a big city is easier to steal stuff from

If it's an one-shot, you may do what I did: Randomly roll an item per player as a pool for the entire group, then let them figure out who wants what and how they'll use it. You may want to reroll if it's inappropriate (I kept getting items with necrotic resistance when I knew there won't be any necrotic damage), but don't tailor-made it for them.

It depends if they're measuring skill floor or skill ceiling.
Wizard skill ceiling is one of the highest in the game. You can do astounding things with the wizard toolbelt. But you can also just get by throwing fireballs and occasionally popping a utility or a buff/debuff when the team asks. The worst wizard (assuming we're not talking intentional sandbagging like only taking noncombat rituals or something, which requires system knowledge and thus is not what the skill chart is for) basically just plays like a pregen warlock.
Monk, inversely, basically just is all one complexity, especially with 4elem reworked. The ceiling and the floor is just a single plane. But, inversely, means if you don't know what you're doing, you will *consistently* suck ass. And a lot of monk players...don't.
Most classes if you brain off and ignore most of their toolkit to just nova out dealing damage, they'll perform... adequately. Bard can't do shit for damage, but anyone with a second brain cell realizes it's for support so instead they nobrain buff/healbot and still perform adequately.
But Monk has no brain-off mode, you get like one and a half rounds of passable damage then get bodied, which is why the prevailing community opinion was that monk was bad and kind of a joke. If you want to play monk, you need real competency in threat assessment, when to dodge, when to retreat, when to hang back and throw shit, when to chase down, when to skirmish vs when to double down and flurry, when to opportunity attack vs when to save deflect up, etc. Every button, every resource, every square of movement needs to be considered. It's not big brain 5D chess, but you NEED a comprehensive knowledge of the full martial tactical fundamentals.
They made it slightly easier in 24 with the changes to Stun. You can't waste them nearly so easily. And deflect soaking melee damage too helped with the tough calls about positioning and overcommittal. But it's still unforgiving to idiots.

If they're going off skill floor, then Warlock should be Low not High.
It's prevailing reputation is that if you just grab armor of shadows and everything that adds damage to EB or Hex, and then hellish rebuke every time the reaction triggers in a boss fight, you do swimmingly, the class is literally playable by a flowchart.
Also, monk did have one other community reputation, it was STUN TOO GOOD STUN OP PLEASE NERF STUN MONK BROKEN THEY CAN HIT 4 TIMES IN A TURN. Typically the same ones who say something similar every time a rogue crits. How there's all these alleged reddit greentexts about monks stunning bosses when there's usually only like a 40% chance to fail the save max and bosses have 3 leg res to burn through is anyone's guess.

I basically almost never give stun immunity to enemies, it's dick design to tell the monks to eat shit because they are basically useless without the stunning strike.
>>96914804
When the monk shits out 5 attacks per round, eventually something will stick and even if it's just to burn the legendary resistance that's even better, because this enables the party casters to inflict even worse effects sooner.

Have you tried having more than one creature in the combat so the monk can use their mobility instead of sitting in front of a single enemy? There's plenty of other options they can use ki for other than stunning strike and flurry of blows
