My LGS doesn't even run Magic events anymore. They used to run prerelease but the owner recently mentioned that with Spiderman, he just can't take on the risk of running prereleases and having them fail.

A healthy, sustainable juggernaut of high-brand-loyalty market value has been sacrificed at the altar of Amazon quickbux and FOMO scam artistry.
It would be tragic, if it was not intentional and motivated by rapacious greed.

I don't know about D&D but Wizards employees are not allowed to participate in sanctioned Magic events, which means they don't walk into a store and have any idea what the fuck is going on. set draft is mostly dead. cube is on mtgo half the year, but there are only six or so standard draftable sets per year and they are only worth drafting for the first week. now they are exporting this concept to arena (which is not mtg but reminds us of it) to erode draft even further. there are also the structural changes to set design with the bonus sheet and massive changes to the design skeleton that make set mechanics and thematic identity irrelevant.

the point is to make all magic the same regardless of the format so you can never escape and imagine a better way to play

i am trying to build a cube and i want the rakdos theme to be life-drain aggro. my vision for it is a combination of effects/payoffs concerning
- paying life
- dealing direct damage
- draining life
- preventing life gain

I haven't picked out many cards yet but I was looking at a couple like Skullcrack. In my search I couldn't really find a BR gold card that can serve as a "signpost" for this theme. Can anyone help me out?

Picrel is along the lines I'm looking for but it doesn't really work as a signpost unless the *entire format* has Start Your Engines in it, which I'm not really into.

Because there are more factor than just removal vs threats. Wraths can potentially deal with multiple threats, but you'll probably have to take some risk and lose life to make the most of them. A bounce spell is card disadvantage, but can help provide enough tempo to kill your opponent before it matters. Certain decks like vivi cauldron are hard to cleanly deal with through any one piece of removal, and require other tactics. Pic related is one of the most busted cards printed in recent history and all it does is help dig for cards.

I've had really tense matches in Magic that have come down to bluffing and resource management but now shit is just wondering if they have it every turn. What kind of decision making is there when the other guy just plays a red 1 drop and attacks and can have it go big mode at instant speed, then plays another one if you remove it? It uses to be that you could strategically take damage but now half of all meta decks blow you out in 1 turn.

guys, after seeing the horrifying set announcements for the next couple years I decided I have to move to a cube of sorts for my own sanity. I have this pile of cards I love all ready but it's not really balanced yet so I wanted to ask:
is it reasonable to built a cube in such a way that each booster has 2 commons of each color, 1 colorless, 3 uncs and 1 r/m of any color? I have heard that cube boosters are usually 100% random in color but I want to kinda make sure every color is feasible every draft. good idea? is there already a better solution?

In theory you can keep your cube in multiple stacks and give N cards from each stack per pack, nothing unreasonable here except maybe a headache sorting the lot after each game night. Yeah Firebending is definitely gonna be the most impactful of the four across formats, the ability for pump spells to turn into Rituals is just too much value for SOMETHING to not get stupid. Airbending seems the least useful imo since the flat 2 cost makes it a worse flicker for your own stuff, the best use case looks to be airbending opponent's cards for tempo gain which is often just worse than bouncing them to hand. The pseudo board wipe that airbends all your opponent's shit will be good for voltron commander decks.

I play mono-white auras as my go to deck in historic and pioneer for exactly this reason. It actually got a decent upgrade with Spiderman via Skyward Spider, with sheltered by ghosts it gets Ward 4+flying which is functionally hexproof. Lightpaws and Kor Spirit Dancer are both pretty retarded value, Sram/Firion is worse but I still run a few copies.
