I just got laid off from my USA tech job,with a severance into March. I'm 32 and have ~$1.6M, so if the US is going to suffer stagflation and just general turmoil for a bit, I think I'm going to hide out in SEA and just wait for it all to blow over.

I'm already out here in SEA and have been living in Asia for a while, but haven't been able to be on a proper day scheduled and I haven't based long term in a non-capital. I was focused on banging mainly filipinas for the first half my stay, then did a sampler of a few countries.

Now, I have the urge to settle in and go deeper on another place.

I would like somewhere with:
*1-2bd housing where the power does not go out. Good desk, comfy bed, moto parking, no egregious bugs, strong AC, easy delivery dropoff for goods/food. Basically, I want non-philippines housing w/a work station lol.

* Easy to go on a relaxing motorcycle ride in and outside of town. I'm currently on a 3 week road trip in Indonesia and it is so relaxing to just carve some corners out in Lombok and Sumbawa.

* Tasty, healthy food

* Nice-to-have if I can enjoy a blunt (basically just thailand).

* Also nice if something like a language school or local place with english taught classes is around or even a full blown university with interesting english-taught programs. I might even full on attend somewhere like Hokkaido university or somewhere in taiwan after taking some time fully off from work/formal study.

* Clean, fun gym/exercise around. I do enjoy basketball, volleyball (at my recreational level), and muay thai when they are around. Bicycle riding can also be fun when you don't have to mix with traffic. Surfing is neat, but I understand how rare it is. Even rarer to get it with a decent logistics setup. bali you have to ride a moto in and overall worse than philippines where I lived 3min walk from surfing for a while.

* Getting a local cutie to live with is also on mind. or even a western one if you'd base in a "nomad" hub where they pass by.

So what is it anons? Share your favorite low key SEA bases and lifestyles for riding out stagflation for a few years while leveling up.


I'll perhaps spark off the discussion by saying that Indonesia has some potential. A lesser known place like Sumbawa Besar with 64,000 people would have some quaint charm, but isn't the ultimate base in this country surely. indonesia does let you live here long term if you buy a property at least worth a certain threshold

Personally, I’d be very happy to fart around and lie low in many places in NE Thailand for a little while; among my favorite towns is the Mekong riverside border town of Nong Khai, but it’s pretty small and certainly won’t check all of your boxes. They have a university, originally a satellite campus of the enormous Khon Kaen University a couple of hours to its south, but since spun off as an independent school, but I don’t know if they’ve got any English-medium programs. KKU has a couple of master’s programs for international students that conducted in English. Khon Kaen is IMO an underrated city, but it’s pretty big and semi-shambolic, and a long way from either mountains or the coast, so it gets too hot in April. I worked there for a couple of years and love the place, but it’s not a tourist destination and never will be.

Another Lao border town with a lot of charm is Nakhon Phanom, but Nong Khai is better-connected and probably has more English speakers assuming you don’t speak Thai or Lao.

A final Isaan option might be Mahasarakham, which also has a large university, but it is a rural hinterland compared to Khon Kaen, which isn’t exactly the height of sophistication by Thai standards already.

Outside of the Northeast, I worked in the small Northern city of Lamphun briefly, and it also has a lot to recommend it—it’s slowly turning into a suburb of Chiang Mai, but it’s not Chiang Mai and shares few of its problems, while remaining within easy commuting distance of the city if you want to smell digital nomads.

Gyms and stuff to do can be found in any population center anywhere in Thailand.

My filipina gf and I did a long extended visa run from bangkok here and....so many russians.

Did we have some nice experiences? yes: playing basketball near monarchy apartment, eating USA style pulled pork sandwiches that are available all over, riding to the mountain pass.

The My Anh nomads/expats behave like animals and the place is teeeeeming with russians unfortunately. This contrasts with the otherwise fairly sleepy town, outside of some 24 hour coffee shops. I could see how I'd probably like Da Nang more when it was pre-war and also less discovered.

I'm also not sure the local women really mess with foreign guys in any appreciable amount.

I'm in a similar position to you. Early retired. I've lived worked in 5 SEA countries and visited all of them. I'm currently in Indonesia too but the place that ticks all the boxes is Thailand. Sometimes I explore some remote parts of SEA looking for the grass that's greener but Thailand is the most comfy. You might want to check out Udon Thani (city). Just $30 flights from BKK, so you're still connected. It's like a mini BKK. And most of the foreigners are old as shit so it will improve your tinder matches. Lots of good food.

Phitsanulok is a traffic-ridden dump. Chiang Rai has become part of the Chiang Mai - Pai circuit for tourists in northern Thailand. The city is a sprawl hell, but the countryside and mountains beyond is really beautiful.
Nan is kinda traffic-ridden as well, but it's nice enough. The river park could use some improvement. Bicycling and fitness culture is big there; most properties offer guests the use of a bicycle. If you have a motorbike, exploring the mountains of Nan would be a lot of fun.

1.6M in the USA can take you extremely far if you plan right, not to mention tech jobs if you're willing to move can also be found basically anywhere. Many tech jobs are moving to the midwest to escape the hell of unstable mega cities and take advantage of lower cost of living areas. I relocated to SD recently, 90k tech job 6 mo in office then only required to keep residence within the state for tax/legal purposes. No income tax, my apartment is like 650/mo for a nice balcony view and 1br, utilities are cheap, food is good, and I can filter out most the trailer trash making 2x the household income here.

By all means go be a doomer in SEA about the USA, just know you're passing up a lot of investments.

There is no worse hell than booking a long term stay somewhere only to have electricity not included and it ends up practically doubling the rent. Happens all the time in Philippines due to electric costs being so ungodly high. Some places in SEA specifically program the AC's start and stop times, limit the cooling to 25C, and so on. Not that I really like it all that cold, I usually have places at 80F but do like to turn it down when I sleep.
