i've just realised i do know what the workaround is. for chinese work visas there are different categories of person. professionals, entrepreneurs, experts, that kind of thing. because i work for my own company, and when i went to china i was there to work at a university, at their invitation, i was in some kind of higher classification. this also means i was exempt from some of the requirements.
