As opposed to who, politicians? Business "leaders"? Inbred chinless aristofaggots? The reason our democracy doesn't work isn't the fault of the people, it's the fault of the twats in charge who won't do what the people tell them to. Look at the UK - consistent, cross-party majorities and supermajorities in opinion polls for nationalising transport and utilities, taxing the rich, controlling immigration, rent controls, reigning in the banks, an efficient and strong *defensive* military that doesn't go adventuring abroad for the fucking oil companies, being as green as we can without turning into a nation of sackcloth-clad hippies living in fucking yurts, proper long-term mitigation like flood defences, seawalls etc etc.
Basically every policy that would make life better for 99% of people has broad support(and also, crucially, mostly also has low levels of outright opposition, ie most of the people who aren't outright in favour either don't know or don't care, meaning implementing those policies won't negatively impact social cohesion). Not one mainstream political party will even pretend to coming close to hypothetically considering the mere possibility of eventually at some future point implementing any of them. How is that the population's fucking fault? We don't own the newspapers and corporations the politicans are in thrall to.
