disc rot is a serious problem. In 2014 I spent over a year archiving old magazine CDs & DVDs from the 90s to early 2000s. I also went through home-burnt CDs. Of the 200 or so professionally printed CD/DVDs about 5 were completely unreadable, around 20 were damaged and only partially extractable as zip dumps and the rest were slowly on their way out, as reading speed got really bad. The home made CDs from the late 90s+ had a much higher failure rate. I've been slowly uploading that stuff to the Internet Archive. If I were to check on those old CDs again today, there would be at least 30% unreadable. Honestly, archiving old media is the most thankless shit anyone can do, sometimes I wonder why I even bother. All you ever do is give material to some future zoomer (or whatever comes after) shithead, so he can make videos for free monies.

My gf works for an archiving service and richfags pay to have their media collections digitized. Whatever they digitize also gets uploaded to online archives, mainly the internet archive. There's a lot of really obscure shit. Records and film reels from the 30's. Most recently they were digitizing a collection of film from a parks service and it was hours and hours and videos of trail repair.

I love being a collectorchad and never falling for the digital jew like a lot of poorfags who can't afford the shelf space or the home to accommodate it so they cope with
>l-le disc rot
>m-muh housefire!
One is easily solved by simply ripping your retail blu-ray discs onto new discs that last longer like M-Discs and the other problem is solved by simply not being an idiot or if you can afford it paying for 3rd party cloud storage

Although if we're being honest disc rot is usually overblown by morons who take poor care of them and keep their discs in damp basements/attics or leave them open to direct sunlight which heats up the discs inside the case over time and melts the glue or shit like that. They never tell you it was their fault either so you shouldn't trust anyone online who claims disc rot is an issue least of all on 4chan where anons lie and troll constantly

For some reason i clicked a video on youtube where some crackhead looking guy was upset because birds had got into his retro gaming room and destroyed fucking everything, these things do happen. that said, the likelihood seems higher than someone with a lot of time on their hands finds something they dislike about your favourite film and make it their life's mission to get it deleted from existence.

I've never met a movie collector before. Everyone I know just uses streaming. It's so weird too because I'll go over to someone's house and the TV has motion smoothing, they say "I just watch whatever" and they don't even know what a torrent is. Suppose you have a huge media archive in the future, will people even be sentient enough to know or care at that point?

I don't care if streaming takes down a movie/series, I don't like it but I understand it. I just pay for a service to "watch" content, it's not mine they can take it away, fair enough. Now then what really gets me, for games on PC (and consoles soon) you """buy a game""", each game individually, for your chosen platform. They can take your shit away at any time they goddamn please for any reason. Even for non-DRM unless you physically have it saved on a drive if it goes down cause the company implodes or whatever it's all over. Digital games are a nightmare from the future.

disk rot happens to SEALED MOVIES.

it's the factory. it's the manufacturing process

That is true I remember not long ago it was discovered that any BD manufactured in the US by Warner Bros. between 2006-2009 are prone to disc rot because they were made poorly. This doesn't concern every single manufacturer though and is just very unfortunate. You shouldn't buy physical media in the US anyway because they closed down all the plants and moved production over to Mexico where they have no quality control so you get scratched discs all the time. In the EU the pressing plant is in Germany and they have standards they follow. The real issue is corpos having to do that shit to save money because the market for physical media is miniscule today compared to 15 years ago and Sony has also stopped producing blu-ray discs altogether, even as Hollywood is regretting they bet it all on streaming that they see no profit from compared to the days of rentals.

However, even sealed discs can still suffer from improper storage. I bought a sealed US Wii game from 2007 a few years ago and it has spots all over the disc. I could/can still use it just fine though and it hasn't deteriorated either so it might not be actual disc rot but if it isn't then I don't know what it could be since they aren't scratches.
