But as a piece of propaganda against warfare, it’s specious, providing one more link in an endless chain of generic macho self-deceptions on the subject. The principal achievement of Saving Private Ryan is to extend that sort of self-deception into the 90s — with patriotic and patriarchal slop ladled on top of it, but none of the strengths or virtues of Kubrick’s movie.
