Perfectly paced, self contained story. Great cast and script. Great music, looked like a billion dollars. Didn't need to tie together a hundred different unrelated lore elements like the lesser sequels. Very tonally consistent unlike the sequels which vacillated wildly between being darker than the original while also sillier. Jack felt eccentric while still feeling like a believable person. He is a cartoon character even in the second movie that so many claim is the best one. Davey Jones is great but he belongs in his own movie with his own story. There were just too many supernatural elements in the sequels to the extent they all kind of cheapened each other. The first one is the only one that actually feels like a movie focused on pirates. The curse was mysterious and we only got zombies in like 3 scenes and only one of them was longer than a few seconds. Rant ended.

I sort of liked the one where Depp goes to pirate-purgatory. Creative, if stoned af.

It's as simple as they gave a shit. They wanted to make an amazing pirate movie and cared about how the ships looked, how the pirates looked, how the script flowed, etc. They didn't start from the perspective of soulless corporate IP humping like most blockbusters and even the latter two pirates films did

Honestly I think one of the big reasons why the sequels were so mediocre was that Curse of the Black Pearl was actually intended to be a one-off film, its success led the Disney higher-ups to demand more films, and the writers and producers had to improvise.

I still have no idea how Disney made such a great action/adventure film one time and then never again
