Actually an interesting question. I want to say no. But a lot of the fanaticism around it comes from the real kpop band they have singing the songs, bring out all their stans.
I think it would have done the same numbers on vod when it eventually released regardless. But also it doesn't really feel like a cinema film. It looks and is written like a long episode of a random kids cartoon.
And I think a lot of its appeal is that you can watch it like a sitcom episode. Ie turn your brain off slop - that doesn't really translate to the cinema experience. But it still sold out all its cinema showings months after it's vod release anyway

1. KPDH is not Marvel or Disneyslop like Mulan or Shang Chi, that's why it is actually popular in SK and Japan on streaming in contrast to that shit.

If you've followed these threads closely you'd know that KPDH is not filled with that type of retardation; the story is firmly rooted in accurate depictions of Korean/Confucian mythology and ethics and set in Kroea (only one of the characters is overseas Korean); which would appeal to Asians. It might not for the Chinese per se given they and their government do not care for K-pop as much, but it's definitely huge in SEA and Korea/Japan/Taiwan and would've made a lot of money there.

the genius of this movie is that they combined that trope with them also being badass fighters who are relatable to a wider audience

It would depend on how much Sony spent on marketing. Netflix spent almost zero on marketing and actual Kpop idols just organically started doing covers and talking about it giving them free publicity. If it was in a theater there wouldn't have been a organic reaction but plenty of people would've have found it and given it a sleeper hit like Elemental.

The mistake wasn't giving the movie to Netflix, the mistake was giving Netflix rights to all future sequels and merch rights forever. They could've hedged on the first movie but they should've had a clause where if there is a sequel they can renegotiate so they could have a share of profits. Instead the only clause they gave themselves was that Netflix can't take this IP to another animation studio/
