The change was made in 2011 with the blu ray and is now the standard version. It was one of the last things George Lucas did before selling Star Wars to Disney. Luckily, I still have the original trilogy on DVD as well as the original, non-special edition VHS tapes that I bought at a record store about fifteen years ago, but I used to always watch Return of the Jedi whenever I saw it playing on TV or somewhere else, and now if I see that it's playing I just ignore it because it's really painful seeing the way that scene was destroyed.
