Underrated dogshit aspect: The way unlockables are set up. You can unlock fucking everything in like a day.
Coins for vehicles were fine for 8 where you didn't have free-roam and like three different items that make a shitton of coins. In this one you can get 3000 coins to unlock ALL the vehicles insanely easily.
The regular characters are just beating the fucking cups. No challenge. There's nothing for Knockout Tour either.
The NPC characters are just fucking stupid, you just have to get lucky and hope you get transformed into the right thing the 1/100 chance that anyone even gets a fucking Kamek at all. Insane that even in online races where there's like 5 Bullet Bills firing off at any given time, you still rarely ever see anyone get a Kamek. And yeah you can just farm them yourself in Vs. Races, but that's FUCKING BORING THAT'S THE PROBLEM.
Character costumes are just finding different foods in free roam and switching characters and seeing if it unlocks a costume or not. That's also just boring grinding.

There's nothing for Knockout. Nothing for time trials. No actual characters unlocked for doing anything in free roam, just useless fucking small shitty stickers. 400 MISSIONS AND ALL YOU GET IS STICKERS. That is what makes this Mario Kart unique so I get that they want to show this off as much as possible BUT I don't think it belongs into the regular online races. The standard should be just 3 regular laps of a track. After all Knockout tour still has all the inbetween stuff if you really want it.
The intermissions just suck compared to the actual tracks.
Grand Prix mode also should just have a toggle for it.

The open world is only cool as a concept because in execution it's fucking terrible. You get a greater sense of awe of the world from Knockout Tour and Grand Prix (with its shitty intermission races) than you do in Free Roam because the game doesn't reward you for shit for exploring and doing its million random "challenges" that ranges from a joke to insanely jank as if they didn't playtest their own challenges involving trick jumps.
All they had to do was make the random NPC characters be part of the challenges and unlocked through that as well as the costumes instead of being Kamek RNG and food boosters. Putting in 500 stickers as your reward for exploring is even more retarded than the Korok seeds in BotW/TotK. But this has been a serious issue with Nintendo's approach to "open" world 3D collectathons since forever; excessive unnecessary shit with no real reward for it other than to pad the game with SOMETHING.

I like the intermission roads, they remind me of the more straightforward design of MK64's tracks. There's still stuff to do on them, such as off-road areas you can get to with mushrooms to get airborn or skip a bit of stuff, and a ton of non-player traffic and enemies to avoid, and ramps to go onto to get airborne to avoid attacks from other players.

The game would be much less special without these in-between courses.Seeing the big named course that you're heading towards up ahead in the distance gives the game a much more immersive feeling. And it feels so cool to It feels so cool to see the environment ramp up towards all the different locales, especially the more gorgeous looking ones like Starview Peak. Exactly people who haven't played the game don't know how the game is setup. Grandprix and Knockout Tour have interconnected race track variation. While versus mode has the traditional 3 lap non-interconnected race track variation.

The game is trying to promote the open world aspect hence the emphasis on interconnected tracks. The effect is the campaign races feel like "straight lines" even though you're getting the same amount curves and loops you would normally get because each race course is broken into sections to form a singular race.

There are race tracks whose interconnected "section" is literally all curves and loops like Boo Cinema or Great Block Ruins. Others are straight lines with multiple trick and hidden routes with different levels of elevation embedded into it. That you wouldn't notice if you just stick to the main track itself like Peach Beach going into Dino Dino Jungle.

I think World only has about one “good” track in each of the cups, so 8 good tracks out of 32 total. The rest are ok to bad. Dandelion Depths is the most forgettable track in history and Koopa Koopa Beach is just a discount Baby Park at the moment. So they save time by using NPC enemies, but had to make the animations for them doing tricks so that costed time.
