Unless you are hell bent on playing them in release order, you can probably watch summaries of SB, Ruin, and HW2 in order to skip straight to SotM.
SB has some story, and Ruin had some story. HW2 barely had a story. SB has a lot of flaws. Ruin is pretty good imo, seemed like they learned their mistakes from SB. SotM seems like they improved from Ruin as well (so far from what I've seen). HW2 is cool but you basically skip it imo. It may be relevant in the next game but not too relevant for SotM. Ruins DLC I think has the most relevance for SotM.

FNAF was only freaky when it was a condensed short story without the secret underground facilities and megaplex malls. It worked extremely well as a simple murder story in a run down shady kids pizzeria that was more spiritual rather than magical and scifi

It was popular when it first released. In fact, someone on /v/ gave me a heads up about it coming out.
The first week or two were fantastic. Lots of OC art, the GET READ FOR FREDDY memes, etc. Then when Markipilier made a video about it, leading to the threads being full of hate and trolls. By FNAF 2 the horny posters took over and FNAF was treated as furry crap by most of /v/.
At some point during SL and FFPS there was a mod that would instantly send FNAF threads to /trash/ and then fill said thread up with porn. They were so weird. I am glad that mod seems to be gone for good.
Around HW and SB the hate died down and its now more accepted on here again.

I do really like them now overall. They actually listened to feedback and improved their games. Their vision of FNAF is more family friendly than Scott's, but I'm okay with that as long as they keep making good games going forward.

My theory based on not finishing the game yet:
We know Fiona dies in the books and I'm not sure if she's dead in the game yet, but at some point when she's 'gone' (either dead or at Fall Fest, I can't tell) he realizes he can't be a single parent. This is part of why he makes the Mimic as a 'babysitter', but in Security Breach there's the family of Servobots that make me think there's something else going on. I'm not saying the Mimic is Fiona but it could have picked up on Edwin's desire for a family after her and David's passing and kept that as a 'core' trait hence why it reappears when its mimicking Afton in SB and creating the family of bots.

M1 is the first one and seemingly the one that becomes the Fiona Mimic. I presume after being uploaded into the F10 N4 computer the Endo was reused for M2 which was the one that become fucked up and evil.

It seems Foxy was a creation of Edwin for the studios automated TV show creation software. Probably just one of many established pirate characters they had for it (Roxy, the plush he made for David, etc.) Chica seems to have been a Fazbear or MCM spin off company, or a rival absorbed by one of the companies at some point that MCM did the design work on. All of MCM's properties are owned by Fazbear now so they probably wanted to take the more popular characters and set up an established restaurant to run alongside Fredbear's (which lines up with existing lore on when the gang was created). This also applies to Roxy, Helpy, the STAFF Bots, Springlocks, and a shit load of other things.

Henry was already working on animatronics with Edwin and William just usurped and sabotaged him once he started losing it. Henry was one of the lead engineers at MCM according to one of the mail things. William still built the Funtimes himself, too.
