My space game will not have ftl, just the ability to distort time perception where biologically immortal characters slow down their thought processes to make it feel like 1 billion years was a couple minutes
And it's a core gameplay aspect to use the mouse wheel to adjust time perception according to the situation
"Muh realism" faggotry must be some kind of attention deficit diagnosis.
>You want to tell a story that involves aliens but have not modeled an accurate representation of their DNA analog and published a paper on your theory?
>Yea, maybe Sci-Fi isn't for you sweetie
They usually do, even if it's junk science or non-sense.
Mass Effect's is funny because it doesn't make any sense in a junk science way, mass effect field makes a giant ship have almost no mass and that allows the ship to jump faster than the speed of light like the biggest issue is the mass of an object. I think somewhere it says that the object is given negative mass, but that would still not allow the object to move faster.
Star Trek supposes the ability to break off from regular space time and keep normal matter in bubble and that they essentially phase into a different plane of existence where you can move faster than the speed of light and then return to regular space. That also handwaves time dilation.
I personal only care if they make up something, even if it's like 'some magical element or thing' allows the FTL travel, we obviously haven't cracked practical faster than light travel so I don't expect some computer geek to crack it so their game makes sense

>>712726187 (OP)Its always handwaved for one reason. We're going to figure it out. Its a foregone conclusion we'll figure out a way to do it. >>712726517Not alot of games use the "break off some space and make it go fast" explanation. I can't think of one, the Alcubierre drive is based on star trek but using actual physics to make it theoretically work but star trek's travel is different since they suppose the existence of "sub-space", which we haven't seen any evidence of.

Energy is not equivalent to mass. Spacetime doesn't exist, time exists because the universe has a spin, like all particles do. This spin is due to photons, which also have a spin, which come from Let There Be Light, which proves genesis is literal. Quantum mechanics is slowly proving that everything is not relative, culturally relative, but that everything is unified under God. This was proved in the double slit experiment. The Schrodinger Equation proves that we have eternal souls, free energy is real, and that we live in a firmament. Reminder that all of physics is built on partial differential equations, which intentionally remove confounding variables to delete God from the integral. I'll be schizo here.
Humanity used to be able to travel faster than light, without the need for external technology. Notice how technology is advancing, humans are degrading with it. Look at how weak and dumb and technology reliant zoomies and gen alphas are and how they fail to grasp the most basic of tasks.
Even in the relatively young vidya industry we use lost technology as a meme, where older games were made with greater, now lost knowledge leading to superior products.
And the further we go back in time, the less reliant humans were on tech to live a fulfilling creative life, and stronger the spiritual connection was between the individual and the universe.
The bodies and spirits of our grandparents are greater than ours. They actually know more than us and can actually manipulate the fabric of world way more easily than us with just their bare hands.
Then suppose we look back even further with this pattern in mind. Just take a look at the architecture and art of old.
I feel like history classes are lying to us, and medieval people were more advanced than us, thanks to the individual's soul being strong. Ancient civilizations were even more advanced than medieval ones. And we come to the stone age, with so called cavemen. They were in peak physical and spiritual condition, at one with all of creation, and I firmly believe they were not only able to travel as souls faster than light, but create galaxies and dream beautiful worlds into reality. That is the truth about cavemen without technology. They didn't need it, and it actively sabotages us as a species since its inception. Discard technology, strengthen your souls, anons, and conquer the stars with your will and spirit alone.
Welcome to Soulpunk.
>>712726187 (OP)they are too low IQ to make a space game without FTL
i posted it in another thread, but a space game would be limited by speed of light travel, and travel between star systems would be like ~5-10 years, similar to how medieval people traveled between Rome, Baghdad and China (like Marco Polo)
of course to make a story like this you need to have a general broad knowledge of science and history
all FTL travel (including wormholes) would break causality and would result in "time travel" occurring (since time runs differently for various observers and in various locations)

>>712728641Because of relativity. From the perspective of something travelling at the speed of light, the transportation will be instantaneous, you never "travel" you simply teleport (but everything else appears to have aged). From something travelling at almost the speed of light (99.9999999%), anything going 100% of the speed of light will not appear to be going a few meters/second faster, it will appear to be going infinitely faster. It is not that it is actually going much faster from the perspective of a stationary 3rd party observer but the perceptions of time are distorted for those at relativistic speeds. It requires exponentially more energy to go from 99 to 99.9 and 99.99, and infinite energy (IE impossible) for anything with mass to go 100%

>>712728778The proof is the gospels, have you never read the Bible despite calling yourself a christian? Jesus always needs to explain to his apostles what he means by his allegories because they never understand them. He predicts that one of his apostles will denounce him in front of the romans because he fears being associated with Jesus. A bunch of times his apostles completely misjudge Jesus' reaction towards an approaching believer who asks something of him. Then there's that story where just before being taken prisoner he goes on top of the mountain to pray to God for the last time and he tells his apostles that came with him to wait for him and stay awake and 2 separate times he catches them falling asleep and disregarding his wishes.
The Bible as we know it was written by men and then compiled and greenlit by a roman council. If God went through all this trouble to incarnate as a human and spread his word, you'd think he would have made sure that that word was written down first hand by Jesus himself and not some Shakespeare bad quarto type of second hand account.
>>712729269Because that gives authors creative freedom at designing planets, biomes and life forms. With solar empire you are restricted to domed or underground cities because everywhere outside of Earth you have highly hostile environment. Nearby clusters are mostly investigated and even if, that still leave little freedom. With interstellar or even intergalactic (because why the fuck not, at this point you can go nuts unless you put restrictions on yourself like 30ly jump limit in Battletech) you can go full balls to the wall crazy. Only problem comes from most authors lacking sense of scale but at the end of the day, it's still an excuse to write a story.

Off-world stuff will probably be done exclusively by robots, since information can travel faster than physical matter will ever be capable of. Just deploy ships to distant plants packed with robots and material, detect them land 100 years from now, then have them build whatever structures are necessary to not only perform their primary objective (mine, etc.) but also begin construction on another facility, which will allow them to construct yet another rocket with robots. >>712731065NTA, but time dilation smells like bullshit to me, too. The only "proof" we have for it is that clocks run at different speeds when in orbit compared to identical ones on the ground. They say this is because gravity and speed make the time around the clocks literally move at different speeds, but they have no way to control for the possibility that lower gravity just makes the clock operate differently in some mechanical way. The measurement of time being different doesn't mean the flow of time experienced is different. If a clock is running fast, you fix or replace the clock, you don't assume time around you is literally moving faster, unless that clock is running fast on a satellite in orbit, in which case it definitely proves time dilation!
>>712731297I just did. And this is just one of countless of examples. Again, READ THE BIBLE, fake christian. At the very least read the fucking Gospels if you want to continue to larp as a christian on the internet, they're short enough that even an illiterate zoomer like yourself should be able to finish them.
Explain how 40k's explanation ISN'T enough.
>>712728641Because the speed of light is not just a random arbitrary speed limit, and accelerating to relativistic speeds brings out more effects than just "travelling fast".
People often talk about time dilation, but only ever from a very detached perspective. Even considering only time dilation it would highly affect you when travelling at relativistic speeds, in particular when you're observing another object's motion. Applying this simplification to that post's example: the light is "actually" only travelling 0.01% faster than you. But your time is accelerated, so you see that light travelling much, much faster. So much faster that, to you, it's travelling at the speed of light.
The full answer is obviously more complicated. Time dilation isn't just some random effect. Really when travelling at those speeds, the rest of spacetime is effectively compressed from your perspective. The speed of light is, in reality, the speed at which the entire universe is compressed to a single point in both space and time. That would take infinite energy to do, and thus you fundamentally cannot achieve that speed. The idea of travelling faster than the speed of light is therefore impossible at a level so fundamental that the idea of just "going faster" literally just does not make sense. The only reason we can even cognize the idea of moving faster than the speed of light is that our idea of motion and acceleration is actually very arbitrary and detached from reality, and only works at small scales.

>>712726187 (OP)That's literally why the genre is called Science Fiction. It doesn't adhere to reality, but has interesting takes on possibilities. The common explanation for travelling faster than light is to "skip" to other locations in space by some means.
You ever watched any 60s-70s cartoons and their hilariously misinformed takes on things like physics, radio waves, radiation or magnetism? Despite the misunderstandings, there was a lot of creativity around whatever understanding they had.
Like, ponder the possibility of "moving freely during a time-stop". You can move freely as though time flowed normally, but what does the stopped flow of time actually mean for interacting with such a world?
You would hear nothing, for there's no movement in the atmosphere to reach your ears.
You would see nothing, as photons are not moving to reach your eyes. If you did see anything, you might be seeing things exactly as they'd stopped, regardless of your interaction with the stopped world.
You might destroy everything you touch, because on relative time scale your mass would be exerting an extreme amount of force in any collisions, at least upon the flow of time resuming.
The other thing about Science Fiction is that it's informed by our current understanding of physics, or at least the writer's own understanding.
Sci-Fi works have served as inspirations for figuring things out, that influence the development of new technologies and deeper understandings of physics.
If something is discovered that does in fact happen, is scientifically sound, and violates the laws of physics, this means that the known laws were not fully formed and become revised and refined. The Standard Model of Particle Physics has been amended over decades with new discoveries, such as the confirmation of the Higgs Boson in 2012-2013.

the sci fi setting that I made up doesn't have ftl, spaceships take thousands of years to move between systems and are all big self sufficient hulks, then they take thousands of years to terraform and colonise planets, leaving systems largely isolated from each other, regions of the galaxy are controlled by different empires and factions but "control" is used rather loosely since it can take a million years for a message to go through the entire empire, so a central power responding quickly responding to anything is basically impossible, people would also live a lot longer though, living 500-1000 years would be pretty normal, and you could be put in cryosleep, where you could also spend thousands of years, it would take a long time for anything to happen but people would also be alive for a long time so it sort of balances out, it would still mean though that systems are basically all self governing and can't really rely on help coming from the outside if something dramatic happens

In contrast, an inertial observer in the same region of spacetime would observe no temperature.
In layman's terms, if you understand how hawking radiation is emitted from an event horizon, then you can image how traveling at light speed forms an event horizon behind you, which will be emitting radiation while you travel at light speed and release that shit in a massive blast if you stop.

>>712731430Atomic clocks aren't mechanical clocks, they measure the extremely reliable frequency of atoms with extreme precision, enabling accurate timekeeping at the nanosecond scale and beyond. Their accuracy is not based on mechanical calibration, it's based on the known and unchanging physical properties of these atoms. This is such an accurate way to measure time that our definition of a second is based on it.
These clocks are used for extremely precise time measurements on things like GPS satellites which need to maintain the most accurate positional data possible at all times. Being in orbit, these satellites experience Earth's gravity less intensely than objects on Earth's surface do, which due to gravity's effect on space-time as described by relativity means that objects on the ground experience events more quickly than objects in orbit.
These relativistic effects create a discrepancy not in the extremely accurate measurements but in the extremely reliable physical process being measured, amounting to an error on the order of a few microseconds per day. This is completely insignificant from a human perspective, but for the extremely precise mechanics of orbital communication which requires accuracy within nanoseconds, the effects of time dilation would cause the complete failure of all satellite and orbital networks within hours or days if not constantly corrected and accounted for.
The "atomic clocks in orbit" example is most common because it has some direct relevance to our daily lives that rely on satellites, but relativity and time dilation has been repeatedly confirmed by experiments and observations on Earth too.

Do you assume that means the temperature just shot up to 150 degrees, or do you question the accuracy of the thermometer in that environment? This is what I'm trying to get at. I don't see any reason to believe time itself is moving differently because they haven't proven that the measurement tool is impervious to altered environmental conditions.

You're focusing on one test of one set of conditions, but in reality this has been repeatedly proven countless times over the past century by thousands of different tests which consistently find the same expected results predicted by relativity. This is not an incredible systematic mechanical failure that nobody ever thought of before you, it is an observed phenomenon in the laws of physics that was explained by Albert Einstein over a hundred years ago.

>>712726187 (OP)Independence War had the best FTL lore. For long distances you had Lagrange Points you need a special drive to enter and you had to maintain a minimum speed to trigger it. Then you could zip around the solar system with a Linear Displacement System that allowed you to travel at light speed without relativistic effects. And their idea for inertial dampeners was releasing high speed subatomic particles when you shut off the drive.
