The rail grind/wall jumps are definitely helpful but they are hard to pull off every time, they also don't give you that much of a lead and if you get knocked down it's a hard punish. They also require good positioning so sometimes you won't be able to do them constantly. Some other paths don't give you an advantage at all other than be outside of the pack.

There's still item spam that can fuck up people who learn these optimal routes as an equalizer. Go look at Mario Tennis Aces where they went full-on sweaty palms tryhard fighting game autism with its mechanics, the skill ceiling is extremely unwelcoming to newcomers. If we're sticking to kart racers, the equivalent would be CTR Nitro Fueled where I used to be one of said tryhards.

When not on a boost panel or using a Mushroom Charge Tricking is slower than normal driving, so it gets used more often for certain Shroom cuts, landing on rails that cut down on time, and to mitigate airtime when driving off of ramps. Each of the new mechanics has a give-and-take that tries to not completely shift the game's balance in their favor over standard driving, even if they're still heavily encouraged depending on the track.

The real tracks in this game are really solid, but what sucks is that regular cups and online push intermissions way too hard. Like instead of actually completing 3 laps of each course, we have to do 3 laps of the first course, long straight lines inbetween courses, then 1 lap for remaining courses in each cup. And everyone picks random solely because its the only way to race 3 laps on a course.

RE4 is not a RE game either, yet here we are.

mk has always felt, and feels even more now, like a collection of little moment-to-moment techs with on-off switches
you can't fail partially, you either do the thing or don't, it really is like speedrunning
proper racing is more incremental, interconnected, and has more pronounced risk-reward game. a little better line here will result in a snowball effect that will improve the rest of your lap, but the faster you go the easier it is to fail. racing sets you up for failure, but that failure only comes from your own hubris and nobody else's.
there are other games with moment-to-moment "advanced techs" that are nevertheless racing. for example, f-zero gx's mts (kind of a drifting tech) plays well with its speed retention systems- if you have more speed over cruise, your mts becomes faster but harder to control, and if your mts is faster, you carry more speed out of the corner and into the next straight, so you create a feedback loop of speed that will eventually lead you to running out of skill if you persist with your desire to go faster.

that all is before we consider powerups and rng actively sabotaging racing. there are racing games that have the exact same sets of powerups that still function perfectly well as natural rubberbanding, but don't take away from racing, for example blur's fixed powerup locations and "blue shell" that you can pass onto the next guy in line with skillful driving and still considerable speed loss, or wipeout's more situational but more powerful powerups and an extra risk-reward loop with an interconnected powerup-health-roll boost system.

I can't even expect the developers to make a 'good' mario kart really.
They've made games that are simply perfection before. 64, Double Dash and 8 all are my favorites, DS is cool too, but I don't like d pad controls for most 3D games though it doesn't keep it from being one of the best. I'll probably end up owning and enjoying it one day, but I kind of wish I was actually excited to play it.

huh. That actually looks pretty sick. Mario Kart's problem was that after the n64 or double dash I think, it lacked any kind of significant skill expression. If you were in last you'd get an item that would catapult you into 5th place, and if you were in 1st place you get only bananas and other shit items, never the fun or strong ones, and you get to eat blue shells until RNG dumps you into the middle of the pack. It was very much a party game not a racing game. Totally random who would win, assuming everyone was of roughly equivalent skill levels.

I have a switch 2 with MKW installed but I haven't actually played it yet. Now I kind of want to.

Like either items matter, and no matter how good you play you can fucked with three items in a row no matter what you do, or items don't matter and it's just whoever time trials the best and pulls out in front the farthest can't be targeted anymore.
Either way, the kart or the racing get in each others way. A great game to never get serious about, like many nintendo games.

I don't know if Splatoon 3 even has *that* many more players, but it has global matchmaking which means I could be playing at 3-4am and still get matches with only 30 second of waiting times. how the fuck are you mad at this clip? rail grinding is difficult, any hop to the right can send you into a pit if not timed correctly and guarantee you last place. It's way more strict than you'd think, anyone who plays knows this. You don't magically glue to a railing if you hover over it alot of the time.

the real issue with this game is sand bagging, i guess 24 players made it even stronger to just do nothing the whole race and stay in last to farm good items. It's really sad to see so many do that
