This. Mario Kart on the snes is kino but it's hard as shit. It takes time to learn the controls it nobody has that attention span now. Back in the day people did and it was insanely fun. Easily the most challenging Mario kart game. Rainbow Road on the hardest difficulty is a real gamer challenge...as is like donut plains 3 or whatever the last one is called

Mario Kart on SNES is good, it's the only one where drifting is organic, you have the physics of the game, and you can try to use drifting to gain time (not always guaranteed), and that's it. Starting with the N64, drifting stopped being something based purely on physics and became a feature guided by the developers to allow you to gain speed artificially. You are no longer drifting occasionally to take tighter corners more quickly, but to gain a boost. Like all mechanics with a poor foundation, it started to become a problem later on, with snaking making drifting a constant feature on the track, where players using the Double Dash train, for example, would spend entire races drifting even on straights, and Nintendo had to start tinkering with it too much to try to fix a problem it had created itself.
