Guild wars 2 is probably the closest thing to an MMO that feels like an actual MMO.
As it makes all content in it relevant so you will find people anywhere in the open world meaning you wont be shoehorned in to playing only the latest content.

FFXIV is mostly a Story focused JRPG at this point. And wow makes it a habit to make you only play new relevant content.

If you want the pure classic wow hit, play Hardcore Classic. Reputations matter again, people are all working together because death means hundreds of hours lost. If your character dies, you can free transfer them off to the non-hardcore PvE realm so it's not quite as hardcore as Diablo can be.

Combat is fun on tanks and melee DPS
Crafting and gathering is kind of pointless. Crafted gear isn't ever best in slot because square enix is too casual focused to encourage players to participate in 100% of the content
Most of the cool rare items are rewards for the game's achievements rather grinding item drops so having cool shit is matter of actually having to earn it rather then just getting lucky

Started GW2 after dropping it a decade ago. Doing events and having random people join, or being in a full on zerg fest made me realize how much I miss MMOs.

However the story FUCKING SUCKS. Granted I've only doing Core, LWS1+2, and am halfway through HoT. The transition from LWS2 to HoT was the only moment that impressed me so far. I do enjoy the justoposition of them forcing diverse characters trying to be progressive, while every female human still has the 2007 standard of being built like a fucking brick shithouse with bolted on tits and asscrack hanging out.

I completely phased FFXIV out of my brain after Dawntrail, Square literally burned all their goodwill. Ive never seen a company turbofuck its reputation as fast as they have, Blizzard too but WoW is in the worst state its in as well and apparently Classic is damn near dead. Really the only good MMOs on the horizon are Maplestory Classic (Little to no info until October), Blue Protocol (Now getting a CHink release first which will kill that game 2x over it is like they learned nothing), Chrono Odyssey (Gookshit this will be garbage, high chance it will not be good). Only thing I can think of that looks good is Aion 2 and thats because Aion 1 release in 2007 was extremely fun for a few months. Otherwise I don't think there is anything that grabs any attention, the 10+ year old games are not the answer as they all have their problems. FFXIV lost a lot of their playerbase, so you won't hear about it much outside of some shill threads on this board.

Dude it gets worse. I don't know if you're still playing, but the Mamool Ja tribe quests right now are about growing food. In one of the main quests the Sharlayan chick helping them asks if they've ever tried letting sunlight in. The lizard says yeah, they've tried forever, and it's not possible. You go to Heritage Found and they realize that lamps exist. The Sharlayan asks Bakool Ja Ja's dad if he can make a magic sunlamp. He casually says "oh yeah I can do that, go get me this easily available material for the invocation", and you make sunlamps that allow them to actually grow food. It's fucking ludicrous. He already knew how to make a sun lamp and they just never did it.

OSRS is the best ongoing mmo, private servers for other mmos like Ultima Outlands, Turdle wow, City of Sneedos. FFxi horizons. There is no reason to play any asian mmos unless they are private servers like MH:Frontier and Dragons Dogma Online. Capcom Online studio really cooked a whole lot

My take-away is that all MMOs have the following designations:
1) Bad games
2) Badly managed
3) Bad playerbase
And other than maybe a handful of private servers, there's fuck all dodging that.

Thank you guys for your recommendations and ideas anyway :( I got crippled recently and it makes socialising hard, but I'd rather not socialise than be forced to interact with people that behave like total assholes then go crying to the GMs if you tell them to fuck off.

Retail FFXI is actually pretty good and way more populated than people assume.

You can literally just Youtube FFXIV's story up until the Endwalker expansions main story. Skip the now shit gameplay. The story is the only thing worth a damn in that game.

Forked Tower's queue system would be fine if mechanics were personal responsibility like in Delubrum Reginae. Hell, even having some phantom job hard requirements would be fine since people could just adjust.
But requiring party coordination, having limited resses and a restrictive timer is retarded, they should've at most kept one of those aspects if they wanted people to pug it. Forked Tower is probably going to become very easy since this type of content always has wacky scaling as people max out everything, but I doubt it will become puggable, if only due to the various bodychecks, interrupts rotation and so on.

XIV is good if you want no RPG-like mechanics and are fine with the boss just shooting circles/squares on the ground

I switched to FFXI a few years back and have been enjoying it much more ever since
Despite the age, it's still very in depth and there's a metric fuckton to do with individual pieces of content being quite unique
Not really an MMO until the endgame though, unfortunately
Basically if you think you like looking up wikis on where to go and what to gear, you'll love it
I still have tons of fun looking up gearsets for XYZ reasons, figuring out how to get certain pieces of said sets, and then trying to go and get them from whatever monster or dungeon or questline or whatever that drops them
Very comfy adventure feel even if its mostly solo (for retail at least, don't know about the private servers)

OC could be the best content in the world if it just had randomized dungeons throughout it that need teams of 4, and when you get in you talk amongst each other to figure out which phantom jobs each guy will use to deal with the dungeon based on a preview at the start or whatever

I think it’s the least concerning plot point, this was covered by talking about “Aetherial signatures” because of the blue meteorites messing with the ecosystem. And a tribe of religious lizard people wouldn’t know which plants would work, most of which were figured out and imported by Sharlayan which is part of the current tribal quests.
