Nintendo's obsession with open world is insane. I get the impression that someone at Nintendo has a strong resentment against this new (now old) wave of playground games. They saw extremely amateurish things like Minecraft, and then absolutely atrocious things like Roblox, suddenly outrank all their games and make more money than all Nintendo franchises combined, and that messed with someone's head there. I even remember seeing Miyamoto saying that they were sorry they weren't the ones who released Minecraft because they were experimenting with similar things or something like that (I don't remember exactly where I read that).
It's worth remembering that Nintendo has been testing a Roblox clone for who knows how long now. They're shooting in all directions, with all their franchises becoming open-world playgrounds, as well as new franchises trying to reproduce exactly what these sandboxes are doing.

It's the Red Faction stuff, where you can take off pieces of the geomitry and throw it around or punch yourself into little caves through the ground.
It would be cool if it was Red Faction as a platformer with Donkey Kong, but they instead use this mechanic like Minecraft, so you have to find different kinds of terrain to "dig" and waste time in the game just trying to dig through it. A bit like how Minecraft starts you with wood, and then you build some tools to go into Caves, with a pickaxe to dig through stone. But in DK it's just a bit different but it's still just kind of "minecraft" without the Creative Mode, so it feels creative but it's inside of a Mario formula, so it feels like uncreative slop instead.

I love how people keep blaming TotK for issues that were already just as big in BotW. TotK obviously took a page from Roblox, but it's all the same. ToTK and Switch 1 arrived just in time before they had any genuine competition with freemium games like this. Fortnite and Genshin gacha clones didn't exist yet, Roblox didn't see its popularity surge until the late 2010's, and Minecraft was sort of in a dry spell with older kids, teens and generations at the time.
Also Zelda isn't very popular with kids anymore, it's more of a teen and adult franchise these days, as much as Nintendo willingly denies it. The only kids I know who're into Zelda, only got into Zelda thanks to a parent, older sibling or relative. But then again I don't know many kids, so maybe I'm wrong in that regard.
Either way, if Nintendo wants to capture a newer generation of gamers with their weaponized nostalgia, they need to swallow their pride and go freemium-multiplat with some of their multiplayer titles and projects eventually. Especially in this rough economic climate. Sorry but it's just the truth.
