It's a low volume product with zero advertising. These things will never sell as well as regular handhelds that are a net loss until almost the end of a generation. Deck wasn't sold at a loss, the Aerith SoC was dirt cheap to Valve.
>>712967002Nintendo is genuinely just as bad, (if not worse if we're going to get into the Wii of starting the trend of manufacturers bricking your hardware for modding) if not worse as the other major platforms.

So let me get this straight; valve basically singlehandedly revitalizes the handheld pc market with the steamdeck which causes other companies to put out their own handhelds. Then valve puts out steamos for people to install on those other handhelds, essentially turning those non valve handhelds into steamdecks?
>>712968085I mean it was less that, more Gabe had Valve make a handheld so he could play some MMO with his son.
It more so just happened to be a great product since it could be subsidized by having Steam as a way of generating post sale revenue and they weren't actively looking to exploit a niche and deliver a good product unlike the other handheld pcs that kind of sort of existed but mostly not really.
>>712968085SteamOS doesn't turn anything into a DECK.

The way the prefix folders are laid out is a fucking pain in the ass, they shit up your memory with endless copies of the same thing and dont delete properly when you remove them from steam, the save file locations are hyper obscure and a gigantic pain in the ass to recover if you swap memory and dont want to clone your entire system. The updates are buggy, I currently have a weird issue where my bluetooth headphones turn on the system every time i switch them on and they blast my volume at 100%, multiple OS updates in the past have broken various settings that i had to dig into linux bullshit to fix. Every new game requires some amount of tinkering with graphics to hit the performance to graphical fidelity sweet spot.
I have also had to sent 2 of them back to get replaced for retarded issues. you're the one you doesnt know what youre talking about because you either dont even own one or you're such a basic bitch you've done nothing but play stardew valley on it.
It didn't sell like shit it's still selling. It's even sold out right now. Valve can sell the steamdeck for ever if they want.

The Steam Deck wasn't sold because advertising it outside of it's ecosystem would be a waste of time. Most people that use Steam are likely to use the Steam Deck if they experience instances where they are not at a regular PC, and want to play video games comfortably. It's used as a tool of convenience and of minimal setup, not an entire console experience, with the added utility of being a PC, and people who saw the power of a Handheld PC saw it as a very strong substitute for what they used before, especially since they were already on PC, and on Steam.

It's like if Nintendo changed how their software worked at a core level because of the GameGear.
>>712956701 (OP)The real answer is that you can only buy it from Steam. It isn't sold at your nearest shartmart.
>>712960703Literally why would anyone care?
It's the functionally the same hardware, running the same software, with the same compatibility. What reason on fucking earth would I have to care that X model sold slightly more than Y model?
Are they gonna stop making steam games now? Is my huge, two decade old steam library suddenly gonna stop working because Asus is selling the handheld that runs steam (and probably SteamOS) rather than Valve? No, faggot, I'm gonna keep playing my games. I'll pick up a new model to replace my Steam Deck eventually, and I'd like it to be a new Valve model because I think their hardware does various shit better than the clones, but it's not the end of the world if it has to be something else.
The modern consolenigger brain is completely incapable of thinking of anything in any way beyond sales numbers and cannot understand that in a proper ecosystem rather than a closed garden shithole, it doesn't matter who's selling the platform. If the Switch 2 doesn't sell enough it becomes a worthless paperweight. If the Steam Deck doesn't sell it still plays the vast majority of games ever made and the majority of new games in the immediate future.
>>712971952Oh is that why it's constantly out of stock on Komodo?

Didn't this thing sell 4 million? For a Linux machine sold specifically for PC enthusiasts, that's a lot I think, especially when it's only available through Steam itself. Parents will buy Switch systems for their kids, adults will buy for themselves, but those kids probably won't care for the Deck. So I consider it a success for what it is. Sales haven't stopped either, if anything they've probably gone up a bit since the Switch 2 controversies.
>>712956701 (OP)People don't want to spend more then 300$ to get into PC gaming.
That's why I'll never understand why valve doesn't just make a 300$ steam machine.
It failed because we were still making decent games back then. Now its all about emulation.
>>712975157the deck is already too weak for ps4 graphics at $550
a $300 steam machine would barely reach ps3 levels of graphics

>>712960703What cope? Nobody will care, it's all PC. The only cope will continue to be from console fanboys as they realize PC is eroding their toxic tech illiterate bubble.
The obsession Nintendo fanbabies have with sales because they have absolutely nothing else to try and gloat about, despite Nintendo just using those sales to screw them as hard as possible, is beyond sad. The Deck could sell a single unit and it would still get vastly more games, features, support and be infinitely more consumer friendly than anything the cancer of modern Nintendo puts out. Nintendo fanboys know this and it's why they screech their little asses off over it.

>>712975919The Deck had an all black aesthetic and all of the things I mentioned, and then the Switch 2 comes out and instead of having its tried and true pastel colors it's just an all black "gamer" console. Seethe retard lol.
>>712975919The switch 2 copied far more from the deck while the deck copied nothing from the switch. Handheld PCs existed before the switch. Valve outright admitted they didn't think about the switch/nintendo at all.
>>712976159I think this is a lie. It's pretty blatant that the Switch inspired it to a degree, this is obvious from quick resume being a priority before launch. The Switch 2 went all out on trying to prove it's "as good" as an umpc while being worse in many ways.
>>712975004What do you mean compatibility?
>>712976357Games like Persona 5, Elden Ring, etc. lack 16:10 so your options are to play it with black bars or use the stretched option in windowed mode. This is okay for some games but for others it cuts off UI elements, so a double edged sword. Wouldn't be an issue if they just shipped it with a 16:9 screen, it probably would have been cheaper too.
>>712976319>this is obvious from quick resume being a priority before launchValve has no reason whatsoever to lie about this. You don't have to be inspired by the switch to recognize a basic, vital feature for good portability. Valve was attempting to resolve the many blunders of pc handhelds up until that point. That was one of them. Same with things like trackpads, which others still don't seem to want to adopt for some baffling reason.

>>712976357You're either stuck with black bars or a stretched image
>>712956701 (OP)It's not a console
It has an extremely niche target group, consoletards won't buy it, the people who can appreciate an open format handheld Linux computer already own a powerful PC. The market for PC games on the go is limited, no kid will ask their mom for a Deck for Christmas, it can't run the anticheat to play Fortnite and Roblox
>>712956701 (OP)i have a steam deck, i didn't pay for it as i got given it by a friend, but here are my issues:
1) the controller layout on it feels weird
2) the sticks aren't very good; the surface makes it awkward to have your thumb on top of the stick, but the sharp edges make it uncomfortable to push it from the edges too
3) launchers are fucking hell to deal with for compatibility
4) unreliable control options make indie games hit or miss; if it has no controller support it's probably not going to be a very good time
5) the deck is too underpowered for most 9th gen games, in fact it struggles with a lot of 8th gen games (even final fantasy 15 struggles on it a bit)
6) it's not quite powerful enough for reliable emulation; even switch emulation isn't that good on it
i really like the deck in theory but the practical barriers make it feel like you have to specially select which games you want to play on deck versus an actual pc.
i think my favourite use for steam deck has been streaming my ps5 to it, which overcomes most of the above qualms and problems, but kind of defeats the purpose of having a steam deck with access to my steam library
>>712976986Which is fine for me. As long as mine works.
>>712976986It's not a niche device and it's not just for large steam libraries, it's anyone who likes actual video games, full stop. People thinking otherwise is due to its lack of marketing. If it had the marketing, physical presence, and global rollout that consoles get it could easily supplant xbox at minimum at this point. The reason it doesn't sell like a console is because valve isn't in that business, their main goal with the deck isn't to become a hardware manufacturer, its to push linux and competition and then get steamos onto everyone else's hardware. They literally can't even keep up with demand as is. The moment other pc handhelds are good enough and loaded up with steamos is the moment they stop making steam decks.
I like how the main argument against the Deck is that it can't play masterpieces such as Dragon Age Veilguard and Last Of Us 2 at 60 fps.

>>712977405not really, the problem is it's a fucking minefield trying to install games

or let's say you want to play Two Point Hospital, a nu Theme Hospital. well, good luck, because the pc port doesn't support controllers natively, making any attempt to map the controls a fucking hellscape.
the trouble is, it can't do *anything* reliably. you can't get a steamdeck and go 'cool i'm gonna play all the indie games i want' because they might not even support controllers. that's the serious downside to the steamdeck.
>>712977438Screencap this, Steam Deck 2 will be their last Steam Deck given Moore's Law is dead. Will the Switch 2 be Nintendo's last Switch? Will there not be a Switch 3? Is there even a point to the Switch 3 after the Switch 2 given that it wouldn't be much of a jump?
>>712977559>or let's say you want to play Two Point Hospital, a nu Theme Hospital. well, good luck, because the pc port doesn't support controllers natively, making any attempt to map the controls a fucking hellscape.that's what the community layouts are for though, i remember playing it on deck just fine.

Valve is waiting for the tech to advance to get a handheld with a competitive price that can run GTA6 because it will be a game played for decades.

>>712975081Let's clear up some misconceptions about the Steam Deck.
>it barely outsold the n-gage/wii u! Now compare the Deck to other PC handhelds and you realise it dominates the (very niche) market. Why are tendiesnoys crying about sales when the Gamecube exists and got mogged by the PS2 at the time? Are they just hypocrites? Also, Valve clearly sees the Steam Deck as a live experiment. Sales are second to SteamOS and Proton (the main products).
>but it's weak! Handhelds are always behind home hardware. Steam Deck = 1050ti with a Steam Controller bolted on. Also the Legion and Ally exist and you can install SteamOS on them if you really need to play post-2020 AAA, and if you want to avoid raping your battery, Moonlight exists. You do own a PC right?
>but you don't own games! You don't have spend money on Steam. You can install DRM-FREE software from GoG/itch.io/DLsite/torrents.
>but physical!Locked down proprietary cartridges are just as bad as software DRM.
>but Nintendo games! Obviously Nintendo hardware is going to be backed by their IP - the only unique selling point. I don't expect to ever run Mario Kart World on the Steam Deck, ever. But you know what I will play? Everything else. Even Deck Verified alone mogs the eShop, and don't get me started on PC exclusives that you can play with the minute it takes to set a Proton version. Emudeck completely mogs NSO, and you don't have to pay a subscription for it.
>but the resolution! 800p is fine with 7.4 inches. Higher resolutions will strangle the battery, which is bad for a portable.
>but Switch 2 Cyberpunk!Stuttery 30-40fps on 5 year old game. Cool.
>but Linux! Valve fixed it with Proton. Fuck Windows 11 and Epic Games.
>you're a jeet shilling! The Steam Deck is LITERALLY SOLD IN FIRST WORLD NATIONS ONLY. Meanwhile jeets line up for Switch 2 as we speak.
Are there any more arguments? Or can we all agree the Steam Deck is based and the final solution to the console problem?

because using a steamdeck to play games is like having a second job. you have to do a whole lot of research, know the exact settings and become an expert at what to use to optimize steamdeck. >>712992445wish there was just a place i could mail mine in to have all this shit done I'm too old to fuck with taking it all apart
>>712992536Portable=/=able to fit in your pocket, faggot.
>>712992641Yeah I'm still scared to do the shell swap but that clear purple is sexo. The other stuff seems pretty easy. Fuck ribbon cables though.
>>712992631and when consoles do it they force you to get new hardware lmao
really shows what your ulterior motives are, bootlicker
>>712992956>hurr durr so its new hardware in both cases>except that consoles are way cheaper hurrrlol
>>712993108except that you have to do hell of a lot more to earn a ban in one game on pc than a blanket online ban on a console
What are the chances we don't ever see a Deck 2?
>>712993238your toy os really doesn't like being tinkered with, it's spyware all the way down that constantly checks whether you did anything naughty to it
meanwhile on pc you can have anything you fucking want
>>712993362>I stealgot it
I'm not a thief, so not a problem for me, no-ownership clown
>>712993335zero
the whole point of pushing the deck and proton is to be a giant fuck you to microsoft
valve needs a big launch that puts linux on the map for normies
>>712993335Hard to tell, deck 3 is never ever though I think. There's the whole smoke about a steam console attempt 2.0 as well but there hasn't been much on that front either. I do understand and agree with Valve that an incremental 10-15% bump just does not make sense for these, the deck 2 needs to be a legitimate step up. Maybe ARM/Nvidia and DLSS is the only way to make that happen idk.
>>712993415>no ownershipyou just admitted that nintendo spies on you
>>712993461normie: SteamOS, that sounds interesting
30 minutes later
normie: wtf Fortnite doesn't work, all my games don't work properly, they crash and SteamOS asked me for a fucking pronoun, FUCKING PRONOUNS
normies: fuck this SteamOS, fuck Steam, we go Epic Store now
>>712993335Low. Valve seems pretty enthusiastic about the Deck. I'd rather they release the Steam Controller 2 first desu.
>>712993571nice fanfic
you think that if normies got wind that fortnite doesn't work because timmy specifically hates it they would be blaming valve
did you forget the helldivers 2 drama?
>>712993571Has anyone ever told you that you're not funny?
>>712993721>yes, and then in my mind normies told Fortnite to fuck itself and went full on playing Counter-Shitted, which is full of cheaters>and it crashed every hour
>>712993935ah, yes, the handhelds, well known for people playing compslop on them
maybe leave your house for once
>>712992683have you actually held a steamdeck bro?
>>712993750SteamOS is not funny, it's Loonix with a Valve sticker on it, and it collapses all by itself
>>712994023>it fits in my pocketyeah, but you are 500 lbs, and other people use backpacks that are the size of your trousers
>>712994062I'm not wasting my time roleplaying with you, I'm just telling you that you're not funny.
>>712994187>yeah, stick it into my ass, yeahdisgusting
>>712994023would you rather carry a laptop around
>>712993571Despite being a faggot, you do have a point about Linux having a learning/adjustment curve that is a nonstarter for many casual gamers
>>712993461True. I guess I was worried that they'd focus on software, on SteamOS, and porting that to handhelds and PCs
>>712993473I'm likewise glad. Chasing incremental upgrades is retarded on a handheld. Just accept some games aren't going to run and play the plethora of games that do in the meantime
>>712956701 (OP)carved a niche nobody out there was willing to, and humiliated microsoft in the process
you can measure its success by how the whole industry followed suit
>b-but muh switch!it competes with it as much as any pc does with consoles
>>712994337I would rather carry a 3DS around, which is nice and small and actually portable and games actually work.
>>712994363>learninglmao
>let's google this game>wtf, no one worked on fixing it>well let's try another game>this one says that i must enter a personal pronoun and then enter these kernel parameters>fuck it crashed
>>712994382just use your phone at that rate
it can emulate everything up to the switch

>>712994023>>712994382Have you? My Deck is portable and games work fine.
>>712994847Last time I traveled an airport security guard recognized and got excited about it.

no romhacks, barebones emulation at the mercy of nintendo, shit performance you can't upgrade from
>>712957440>Valve/Gabe: we arenโt like the other companies who are essentially like the government tee hee weโre so cool>also Valve: hires Indians like theyโre the government or any other corporation Is someone gonna expose these lolbert cocksuckers one day or will I have to do it
>>712975871>wow you're so autistic for wanting a portable handheld this is exactly the problem with modern handhelds, they panded to retards like you that never leave the house and wanna be LE COMFY XD in bed instead of sleeping
>>712995478I'm not shilling anything; I'm trying to discuss the deck
You've been unwilling to actually argue the cons of it, and instead are just saying retarded falsehoods and wasting your time. Although, I doubt you do much with it anyway
>>712995874Is saying steal wrong your big gimmick?
>>712995769I don't understand the pocket autism. I'm not a 3rd grader who plays games in public. I just put my 'eck in its case and put that in a backpack or something.
>>712996036>I can't cheat!!!
>>712956701 (OP)It's an enthusiast device tied to purchasing on the steam store and also has varying performance issues with newer games. Unless the Steamdeck is sold at a Walmart/BestBuy/Target/Gamestop ect then it will never reach the masses.
>>712996187>having more options is cheatingi accept your concession
>>712996183>I play near my bedwhat's the purpose of the shiteck then?

>>712996060Are these movies actually any good? The 3D ones look like shit.
>>712996276Quote the wrong post? But to answer your question, some games are just comfier on a smaller screen (2d, low poly games, etc).
>>712996276Other than using it on a long flight to Greece and when I stay with family for the holidays, I exclusively use it at home, either in bed, on the couch or in the backyard
>>712996183Only time I play vidya when out of house is at a hotel room when out of state for business trip or visiting relatives. Playing it in public past the age of 17 is embarrassing. Hell even in HS its bordering on that.
