I'm really hoping it's good because my son is a big donkey kong fan. Nintendo is making it as their first non-launch title for a new console so they definitely believe in it somewhat and Nintendo is typically pretty good only releasing high quality stuff for their big mascots so that gives me confidence but I guess we'll see in like a month

Besides the shitty redesign, I bet it will be just like TotK and MKWorld, people are gonna posts video clips of DK's overly expressive animations as "Soul", doing skips, wacky things with the destructive environments (bet someone is gonna make either 3d models, a 8bit sprite of Mario or dicks) or movement tech to make the game look "sick" but the general consensus will be that the game is either empty, gives too many main collectables for doing nothing or has its own korok seeds.

Agreed. Maybe a hot take but Nintendo never really "got" Rare era DK but still kept using the design anyway. You had that whole stretch from Gamecube era up until or maybe even past DKCR where DK's whole brand identity was just Monkey, Jungle, and Fruit. I don't 100% love Retro's take on DKC in terms of artstyle but it's a hell of a lot better than the soulless action figure Nintendo kept putting in spinoffs. I think the only exception is Smash 4/Ultimate to some degree, but that's because Sakurai and his team are just insanely good.
It's honestly part of why I'm okay with the redesign and new attitude, I'd rather Nintendo go in their own direction even if it's not my favorite then soullessly copying the recognizable parts of Rare era without having any idea why it worked like they've been doing for the last 20 years.

I was initially interested after watching the trailer, but after seeing all of the Treehouse footage it lost me
you can tell it's from the Odyssey team because it rewards you for doing basically anything and even has the unskippable animation every time you get a banana (moon)
there's zero level design or really any kind of game design at all, since the solution to everything is to just smash around the level with no thought

How fun the punching through everything gimmick will be remains to be seen, but the movement for sure looks really fun. Running and jumping as dk while punching the shit out of enemies and the environment souns like it'll be fun. As long as there isn't too much running around in big empty levels.

I've seen a few channels who went to a preview event and wasn't feeling this game specifically. I already know what I don't like about it. They pretty much already showed the extent of the game. You punch everything then pick up and throw specific rocks at things you can't punch. It's not an open world game but you can already see how unrewarding collecting the gold bananas are going to be if you're just breaking everything and here you go here's your trophy.

There's a button for clapping which just is echolocation for things in walls.
