honestly I'm not sure. As somebody who has played a ton of romhacks they all have similar problems. It all stems from the fact that pokemon's combat only really shines when you have to go through a gauntlet if similarly powered teams, but the moment to moment gameplay isn't all that great in facilitating that. It's sort of uncanny how stadium is essence of that idea but you can't just slap that onto the main games. You probably need separate styles for trainer battles and wild battles, have the regular trainers be more gimmicky, and radically alter how leveling works but that's just me throwing shit at a wall
