There were Pandaren in Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos.

They wanted more of the furry audience, plus the chink audience (especially the chink furry audience). You can tell that this is true because they kept adding almost exclusively furfag races to the game.

I still don't get the backlash. MoP ended up having some of the best lore and worldbuilding in the franchise's history and the Pandaren fit in perfectly instead of the meme race they originated as.
