I know, and that would have worked, especially if they really played up him being a glory hound and clearly kind of larping the Hero whenever a situation came up, but most of that was put to the wayside. Viconia got the humiliation ritual, Sarevok become Bhaal's little devoted bitch (which isn't what he was in BG1), and Jaheira and Minsc could be appearances and allies but not companions. For Durge, I find Shadowheart parallels them really nicely. I'm not a fan of true blank slates in RPGs because they almost never come anywhere close to real table top. I like a decently well defined character and then being given numerous options that the character I'm roleplaying as would reasonably make.

Resisting or giving in as Durge is far more narratively interesting than just imagining shit for my Tav as he does generic Racial/class options. I wish the game had more instances where it forced your hand in regard to your urges so that you could then pick narration dialogue for you to choose if you regretted it or enjoyed it.

The fact that so much of the Origin character is just default Tav instead of being stuff specifically that Shadowheart, or Gale, or Lae'zel would reasonably say was quite disappointing. I'd really like Larian to go all out for Origins in their next game, they felt pushed to the Wayside in BG3.

Reminder that Icewind Dale 2 will never get an Enhanced Edition because the source code was lost long ago, and there's no way it'd make enough money to justify spending to try to recreate it without that.

If you were trying to start with Tav, I personally find Durge a lot better for keeping myself engaged with the story. Roleplaying into his bloodthirsty nature while still trying to be a good guy leads to a lot of comedic situations. Indulging them as a villain adds a lot of spice to an evil run.

I just realized there is never a point where we see Shadowheart with her hair down, even during or after romance scenes. That's kind of a rip off. Seeing a chick who usually has a braid with her hair down is the best part.

Voice acting and mo-cap is amazing but the story is so bad. As soon as you hit act 3 the tension nose dives and you get pulled in 6 different directions. It's bad for an RPG for your PC to be thinking

Origins don't seem to have much unique content either. My first game was as Dark Urge, who had numerous unique scenes in each chapter, but now that I'm playing as Gayle, there's hardly anything. Chapter 1 gave me a cat at the camp and a small amount of distinct dialogue for the Elminster encounter where he tells you to kill yourself, but this still plays out in the same way with no special origin options, and with player-Gayle being less able to communicate his distress and anger, because he is mute, and also because he is abstracted from his own existence in that player-character way. In Chapter 2 so far, there's been nothing related to my origin.
