It really isn't.
The by far biggest reason is unironically that Digimon, broadly, no matter all the exceptions, are too smart.

The key to Pokemon's success is in large part people's love for animals and pets. And an animal being intelligent can be cute, fun, cool, or overall awesome. But when your pet is as intelligent as a human person it starts to become creepy to treat them as pets and they lose out a lot of their "animal qualities" in the process. And this makes them less appealing to most people.
Granted that it makes them more appealing to some and potentially a lot more appealing to others. But most people prefer the pet-pokemon over the person-digimon.


And clearly they recognize this on the creative side too considering how even pokemon that are theoretically super smart, they still act like dumb animals in practise anyway.

I always felt like most of the "canon" Digivolution lines made sense, and that anything that turns mechanical also made sense since Digimon are just inherently tied to devices and and machines, what with being digital. Even something like Patamon at least has wings before it becomes Angemon and part of the story with it is that it's an unassuming, underwhelming creature that has a hidden potential tied to it. It's okay if the evolution isn't just turtle to bigger turtle to bigger turtle with cannons.

The reason she calls it GaruruGreymon is actually an incredibly obscure reference to Omegamon's first appearance in the WonderSwan game Digimon Adventure: Anode Tamer (and its second version Cathode Tamer released 5 weeks later) as an event-distribution Digimon ala Mew in Pokémon. This game came out in December 1999, about 3 months before Our War Game was in theaters, with the event planned as a promotion for the movie (Diablomon also appeared in said game, and even Apocalymon). This movie is better than Our War Game, not to say that OWG is bad in any way. But that first movie is something you can show ANYONE, they don't need any background information. You can watch it in Japanese without knowing subtitles and you will still 100% understand what's happening. The empowering concept of children having an extremely powerful pet monster is something universal, something that anyone who has ever been a child can feel an emotional attachment to. The use of Bolero as a way to emphasize escalation and evolution is inspired, and there's a lot of symbolism and subtext present if you've read any of Hosoda's interviews.

Our War Game, by comparison, is meant to play out like a summer blockbuster and has what Hosoda calls a "miracle ending" that's just thrown in there because it vibes with the feeling of the movie. It was even meant to be a road trip movie early on, while the original movie was supposed to be a story about Taichi's father and his friends having fun and rampaging with Digimon through the city during the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. I love OWG, but it's not something that everyone will get something out of, especially since you need 50+ episodes and a movie of background information to really get what's happening. It's less of a universal concept, but it's still really cool.

Pokemon has worse monster collection RPGs, they're only good if you like PVP combat or solely the actual act of collecting monsters to fill out a checklist. Any time Pokemon makes a more complex creature design, people say it's overdone or "looks like digimon". I have heard this complaint among casual players since Gen 4, specifically when they added god level mons. People just want Pokemon to be a simpler game.

My only issue with digimon games has always been the more open ended evolution paths including a bunch of weird gimmick versions of existing digimon.

Digimon didn't succeed because it strayed from what made it appealing whereas Pokemon kept refining itself. After Adventure and World 1, the idea of being lost in the digital world with your monster buddy was basically abandoned. Tamers was a slight exception due to Chiaki Konaka's writing, but 02 and Frontier just felt nothing like the Digimon people started with. The games became generic turn-based JRPGs, which is the complete opposite of what they should've been. And after that who really cares.

The parts of Digimon that are focused on the mystery and weirdness of the digital world are the absolute best, but the franchise doesn't really capitalize on that. To a degree the same thing is true of Pokemon but if you play a Pokemon game or watch the anime you know exactly what you're getting.

Digimon never took off because the games sucked. All they had to do was copy the pokemon format, but even the digimon games that resembled pokemon's format still made digivolving a fucking labyrinth of shit that doesn't make any sense.

Pokemon was basically Shin Megami Tensei for children.
Neither was truly original but Digimon was fighting an uphill battle against the market leader that was tamagotchi, whereas Pokemon was the mainstream version of a niche idea backed by a massive corporation.

Is not labyrinthine evolution requirements at all. The most convoluted it gets is needing to DNA digivolve/fuse to get some Digimon first before going further down a different tree.

The only thing I dont like about Digimon is that my favourites are never the higher tiers so I can never use them for the entire game like I can my Pokemon.

Even if they pushed for competing on the gameboy they still would've lost, every kid in the 90's and early 00's wanted a gameboy packaged with pokemon or legend of zelda and they got custom colour schemes and decals to show off to the other kids because they were nintendo brands.
