It seems like this topic comes up in most of the gay furry threads these days.

Here's the whole story on that matter. I brought up the idea in the Snoot discord, looking for at least an artist and a decent programmer to help me out. It started out pretty good, actually. I explained the premise of the story, Duke's underrepresented background and the thematic and lifestyle contrasts that make him interesting as a character.
Yuri and Nerd were actively interested when I explained that it was a story about a journalist in a whirlwind romance with a gay male prostitute from a low class rural background.
They were even speculating about various bad endings that could come out of the situation, and made some suggestions for things Duke should do and say. It didn't seem like it was in bad faith.

But as soon as I explained that Duke was homeless and consigned to poverty and prostitution because he ran away from home after having his loneliness and naivete taken advantage of by a man who used a church as a front for his abuse of many kids, not just Duke. It turned into mockery.

The point of the story is supposed to be that people don't become untouchable just because they got dealt a few bad hands in life, and that hardship and your mistakes don't have to define you. But they couldn't get past the fact that I dared to touch on that subject at all.

I had already explained that no such thing is the case in the story, and Duke turned to the church and his abuser for relief from the feelings he already had, as an outlet. It's showing that he was vulnerable because of his circumstances. Nothing changed, it's just that he jumped on an unhealthy outlet for his natural feelings because there were no other options for him, living in a very conservative place in the middle of nowhere. He was exploited because of what he already was. He wasn't exploited by being molded into being a different kind of person.

I think that's a theme that's worth touching on. There are too many gay furry games about angst over being unaccepted by family and society at large, because they don't understand you. There aren't many about being distrusted with a character's own feelings and their own agency over their life because of something that was done to them. About everyone acting like those feelings are the product of the harm rather than what made them vulnerable in the first place.
