Got this for the switch a while ago and started playing recently. It's fine so far I guess if not a little too star treky. Does it get any better or more exciting? I never hear /v/ talk about this series oddly enough. I've even seen threads about wild arms but not this.

How is the series? What are your favorite games?

I liked first departure, it's a good game but the overworld map is a bit too big with too much distance between areas imo

2>1>5>4>3, haven't played enough of 6 yet to determine where I'd put it

I'm also interested in the sequel but I don't know if I should pirate it or buy it on the switch 2. I seem to prefer to play games in handheld mode or else I never finish them.

I get what you're saying but at the same time it's different. If I wanted to play another snes looking jrpg there's tons of them. The new style adds something different. The originals still exist. But yeah the sprites on the right are way too pixelated.

I dunno about that, but the art's definitely better
all the PSP version was was a slightly easier port of the PS1 game with meh character portraits and ugly item portraits that replaced the kino low poly 3d items

The PSP version added that stupid 3 hit combo to basic attacks, which made some characters like Dias better, but made characters like Claude much worse. The 3 hit combo stops the Eternal Sphere's gimmick from working.
It also changed some physics so Air Slash spam wasn't as powerful.

fair, I never really used claude as soon as I got enough characters to push him out
which usually meant as soon as I got celine, ashton, and probably welch or precis

it's really comfy, halfway in you can craft broken weapons to carry the whole game, there's some super fucked up optional boss you have to level up your skills to summon it, if you can beat it you don't really need to continue on, it's harder than anything in late game.

The series has this weird vibe to me, where it's really cool concepts that aren't executed well at all. And the most popular entry in the series, 2 is the worst one because it's mostly uninteresting.

Star Ocean 4 is a poster child of the ugly duckling, because it's got more unique executions and concepts and just interesting design decisions compared to the others in the series.

And what's weird, is even though I leave each Star Ocean feeling disappointed or lackluster, I keep wanting to come back and I can't pinpoint why I keep coming back.

If anyone's going to hear about an entry in the series, it's going to be 2 or the most recent. Ask most people who played ps1 rpgs and SO2 has a higher chance of being mentioned than anyone talking about Star Ocean 3 in ps2 rpgs.

I'm not even talking about opinions, I've not even played 3, I just know popular consensus.

that's probably because 2 got a remake very recently and because people are starting to realize that 2 was, in fact, the highest point of the series after almost 30 years

/v/ talks about it sometimes, but there's a few anons who get really, really fucking asspained about last hope and start shitting and pissing all over the threads, so it discourages conversation.
>>713399031
It fills a tech-fantasy niche of which there is very, very fucking little around. The only other options are either Phantasy Star, or a handful of short indie rpgs that try to sorta go there but not very well.

Not a JRPG, but what about Wizardry 8/Might & Magic 6/7/8? Otherwise, yeah, science fantasy is non-existent for new shit.

2 is really good. I beat it on Switch and had a blast the entire time. It blew my mind when I finished and it said I had completed ending 1 of 100. I didn't even know I could get other characters. I had weapons for people that couldn't equip them.

I played as the girl and my only complaint was that the battles become super easy once you get the blonde haired guy and just control him the entire time in battles. The battle system is still really fun and I like seeing monsters on the overworld. It really feels like the game was over developed and you could ignore 50% of the stuff in the menus. You can play a song so it makes your crafting more reliable and it only activates while the song is playing. Who came up with this idea? It's cool but it's so over the top.

As a kid, this game would have taken over my life with how much it has to offer. As an adult though, I just get through the menus as fast as possible and pump up my physical attack damage.

Alright faggots, I'm not a big JRPG, should I actually give the first two games a shot? I know the 2nd game has a remake but I wanna start with 1 maybe. Should I just skip that? I still have to play Suikoden, Lunar, Finish Chrono Trigger, and play FF6. Feel like if I play all the good JRPGs then all the above average stuff like Lost Oddyssy and the rest will just be shit.

Do I play a translation ROM of the SNES version or all the remakes of the PSP version? Or just the PSP version?

Which one has nappy time? I remember a friend telling me this game series was dogshit and he showed me a video of nappy time.

If you're not really into JRPGs, I would skip the first one, yes. That way if second story doesn't grab you, you won't be missing anything from the franchise really.
If you enjoy it, you can always go back and play the 1st afterwards.

if you really wanna get into it, play the original ps1 2
they remade 1 in 2's image for psp then remastered 2 as well, and the modern release of first departure R is a remaster of the PSP remake so if you like 2 for PS1(or PSP I guess) you'll like 1 for PSP(or switch or whatever it's on)

the rest of the series is a mixed bag
