2’s English dub is the worst. X’s sounds fine, but it’s heavily localized with script changes.
1 was really good for being done in 2011. 3 used the same voice director too (Mark Healy).
Monolith doesn’t have the tech to do lip flap sync per language (look at FF7 Rebirth’s), so JP is way more consistent.

I have a shitload of little issues with XB2, i was thoroughly annoyed with it when i was playing it 3 years ago. Dogshit ui, absolutely abhorrent field skill system, weird pacing where they jammed several filler arcs to pad the runtime, boring as fuck side quests.
But none of this matters because the game genuinely had a fantastic atmosphere, surprisingly good story, vibrant world and fun characters/music, and that's what i still remember about it. Honestly, I remember more things about 2 than about 3.

I consider replaying it, but i wonder if there are some quality of life mods to improve the experience. Wouldn't mind to just turn off field skill requirements because they can go to hell with the menuing.

Game is great, funny heartwarming story where for once MC is not out to kill god but actually thanks him for everything, he literally saves the universe and gets an harem of 10/10s as a reward, it's an amazing game only held down by the Switch shitty hardware.

I finally got around to 3 after the shitstorm blew over and its the sort of experience that was better and somehow a lot worse than I expected. Every interesting idea is marred by two baffling ones and I think its less filler as it is systematic bloat that arises from having 6 man party as the core. The narrative has to constantly devote time to them, the combat has to be thinned to spread your impact for them, the accessories have to be split up for them, and it all culminates in more stuff that seems great at first, but quickly dilutes instead of enhances. Which would be fine if it wasn't fundamentally broken - even with the level-down mod, I was almost capped out of every resource by chapter 3 and still had dozens of side quests waiting.
And then, of course, you get the JRPG final act effect which always tends to trivialize the events that precede it and while Xeno games are no different, 3 intentionally undercuts a lot more than I think people tolerated. Which, again, would have been a lot more palatable if they reached it in 1/2 of the amount of time and for this reason, I honestly would recommend switching on Easy and skipping past the enemies the moment you hit the burn out. Because chances are, there'll be 30+ hours left in the game when you get it and I still think it's relatively satisfying to finish it. Or at least, the game gives you so many rollercoaster of emotions (going from the best evolution of the combat with grounded characters in an interesting world, to hating how much art and combo spam on the spongey enemies while your drab characters get monologed by another goofy ass villain) that you kind of want to see it through.
Also, I pray you know some basic JP because the subs are an absolute travesty at points.

I would say it was a combination of the Internet purity club deciding it didn't pass their ethics standards, the "gacha" aspect of collecting blades, and the complexity of the battle system that almost required a guide to learn to use. No, people hated it because it was a big step down from the original in terms of story and also a step down from X in terms of gameplay.
The combat in 2 takes ages to open up and it bombards you with a million of unskippable, boring text-only tutorials.

Level design is a regression; they dropped the full open world from X in favor of segmented areas like in the first game, which was that way due to the Wii's limitations. There are more than 2 titans now, yet they all feel incredibly small compared to the Bionis or the Mechonis.
Field Skills are stupid and I can't believe that such a mechanic passed QA. Only reason these exist is to justify the gacha.

The gacha mechanics are annoying and could've been done away with.
The game already randomizes your save file at the beginning to artificially increase the likelihood of pulling different sets of Blades in the gacha. If you want to keep variety in playthroughs, just make it so you encounter different quests to unlock different Blades depending the random number generated by your save. Do away with common Blades entirely.

That's without getting into the battle harem story, the inconsistent and almost schizophrenic art style, terrible localization, cringe humor, etc.

It's just a weak and rushed entry in the series, but contrarians on /v/ will defend it only because it is the first Xenoblade they played and because it puts boobies front and center.

I really love the game and don’t really have any issues with the designs (beyond the clashing art styles from the guest artists), but I can understand people having problems with the gacha system, field skills, tutorials, and performance.

The first chunk of the game is a slog and made me drop it when I first played. The other 3 games are much more consistent, which is probably why they have better reputations.

A lot of the game feels like they were unsure of how to communicate the game’s core (both in the narrative and gameplay sense) at the outset, resulting in the first four chapters feeling quite random. The gameplay is basically kneecapped for the first 15 hours.

Chapter 1 is a solid introduction, while 2 is a meandering lull in the action. 3 starts tapping into the emotional core of the game, while 4 turns that on its head and dips even further than 2. The game pretty quickly finds its narrative footing after that, but for someone without the patience to deal with it, it really can be confusing.

I don’t think I was really sold on the story until I made it to leftheria.

The Klaus reveal in 2 was lightning in a bottle. It was just straightforward enough to not be confusing to newcomers, while at the same time connects to 1 substantially in a way that can satisfy fans.

Given 3’s premise, it would have been difficult to work that sort of thing in without pulling an autism dump (as seen in Future Redeemed). 3 reveals enough information for the story to work for new fans, but definitely needed the DLC to make sense for those paying attention to the overarching narrative.

Why? It's apparent that Pyra fits with the theme of the game being to not give up. Pyra has given up. Even as the Aegis, she's given up hope. Rex doesn't know it but the only reason Pyra wants to go to Elysium is to beg her father for permission to die. Malos would jerk off to the idea if he knew because she validates his worldview. Alrest is dying and she contributed to that. She's scorched whole Titans and the hundreds, possibly thousands, of people on them off the face of the Earth. Her body count would make the biggest warlords blush. And what was it even for? Nothing changed. After 500 years, humans are just as bloodthirsty as they were before. The Architect restarted all of life and it changed nothing. All of the powers that be have no choice but to admit that people are just like this and that it's better to just let the end happen. Addam's dream and the Architect's dream will never come true.

Xenoblade 2 is full of anime bullshit but the kicker with Pyra is that she rarely joins in of her own volition. Because from where she stands, she doesn't deserve to be happy. Why would a murderer like her deserve anything positive in life? But that's not what Pyra is. She's not a weapon that exists to atomize shit, she's allowed to be happy and actually enjoy things that the world has to offer. And when she does and Rex asks her if she loves this world, she's able to agree. Which then allows her to return to her truest form. Anyone who fucked up in life can find value in Pyra's story, why is that a bad thing?

Also, yet again, your dishonesty is showing because during that fight where Pyra was captured, Jin was just better. Mythra tried to use all of her power to stop Jin and nothing worked. Siren didn't work. Foresight didn't work. So Pyra had to bail Rex out. That's not Pyra's fault and yet again reinforces how it's Pyra who ends up having to carry the emotional load for Rex and Mythra until Rex becomes strong enough to do it himself.
