What I'm doing right now is worse than this. Since, even when being invisible/offline, it shows playtime increase, and those with a keen eye can still see me playing games. If I turn my PC fully offline, it'll help that, but the playtime will return when you come back online, so it's a temp stopgap (plus annoying to have no internet)

Someone added me on steam the other day and I was confused, until I scoped the account and saw that they had hundreds of friends so I declined them. No idea who you are man, but I don't need you. I also barely play online games anymore so I had no idea how he would've met me.

I think an issue is that many of these people don't have IRL friends or at least a close friend group similar to my Internet one. I found it easy to have respect for other people online (anonymous shitflinging aside) due to having IRL friends in school and I have cultivated friendships in my community. While I have distanced myself from all my highschool friendships (a combination of miserable assholes that won't make changes, druggies, and some who have just amicably grown apart) I still have a couple friends who I get together with weekly/biweekly (who I initially met about a yearyear and a half after I moved to my current city) as well as coworkers I get along with and periodically go to social events for. The people in my friend group (myself included) aren't perfect by any means, but mutual respect, compatible personalities, and willingness to both engage with each other AND give space goes a long way to smooth the rough edges over. My IRL friend group includes A BAP-subscribing right wing guy and a neoliberal "certified fact-checker" who has attended all the local no kings protests. We have arguments, mock each other at times, but at the end we still have the mutual respect not to badger each other endlessly about it.
