I maintain that Gou was actually good. It was Sotsu being 95% recap with a DBZ fight at the end that killed the series. If they had condensed the repeated arcs in Gou and had the second half of it be the Satoko POV stuff they could have dedicated the entirety of Sotsu to having the Rika/Satoko conflict play out in a meaningful way. Honestly if Ryukishi wants to keep writing Higurashi shit he should just do things separate from the main cast and rehashing 1983 for an eternity since all that needed to be said was said and every new iteration is just a mockery of the original. There's a chapter from the Higurashi anthology Kataribanashi from at least a decade back that takes place in Hinamizawa during 1945 from the perspective of an American pilot who's stranded there with broken legs. It was a pretty neat read even though it was only 1 chapter and really makes me wish we could see more Hinamizawa/Onigafuchi without it being centered on the same people every time.

Hanyuu is still described as "part of Eua" in Sotsu, they just never elaborate on what that means. Just like when R07 dropped his original idea of addressing why Hanyuu could easily have solved the original mystery and never did, she always seems to be protected from his character breaking decisions unlike other characters.

In Mei, in one of the few stories with actual R07 script, he did write a story that actually explained everything, but it's standalone and you could easily interpret it as only relevant to that story.

Basically, Eua and Hanyuu are the same person playing both roles. She's omnipotent and omniscient so she can play both roles at once. It's also something she does to avoid the boredom disease from her near omniscience.

Like I said though, the way the story is set up in Mei you could regard it as completely standalone and you aren't forced to see Hanyuu as a complete lie outside of it, but then the story explains the ruins in the sea of fragments are a reflection of the boredom disease in Eua's heart... which would mean it's relevant to Gou/Sotsu. And you see those ruins even in Hanyuu's space there.

The anime also had two scenes hinting at this they just go nowhere. Hanyuu messes up her first person pronoun when talking with Rika at the start of Gou. And later on Rika calls her out on never saying auau anymore.

There's also how R07 in an interview about Sotsu's finale said the whole Eua vs Hanyuu final battle was a farce, just Eua putting on a show for her exit.

The problem with the kids is that they ruined all pairings and also they wanted to set that up as a good ending of sorts, so their backgrounds are all boring compared to the OG Higurashi cast's traumas that play directly into the conflict.

Oni is just a mess structurally. It feels more like a long flashback sequence than an actual proper standalone story.

Nope, Eua makes one comment about it being amusing that Satoko decides to lock Rika just as Takano gives up, but that's the closest it comes to connecting them at all.

Also, R07 has written a couple of side-stories post-Sotsu (a Reading Drama, Gou/Sotsu Another Ending, now Explosive sales of Doujinshin in Hinamizawa) and all just outright have Satoko = Lambda without anything Takano related.

Mei also outright said a witch wasn't involved with the enemy side of the original Higurashi at all, and had Takano making a pact with a witch AFTER the OG Higurashi, with it actually being related to Mei's plot. Those stories weren't R07 written scripts though, so I dunno if that's just the Mei writers take on it or if it's R07's actual explanation for their connection.

She has a good dynamic with K1 which ironically causes Meakashi to happen in part (Jealousy over Mion, Guilt over falling for someone else other than Satoshi, feeling powerless as Shion when she's rightfully Mion) and had Masturibayashi not made it so that Satoshi is alive the whole time in the clinic I think it would have been a legitimate pairing.
