In the best possible outcome, it would be a regulation ensuring online games have an option to specifically allow player created private servers.
In the worse possible outcome, it'd probably be something like an online game must be functional past its lifespan, which means literally nothing since opening the game and being stuck on a title screen would be technically "functional".
>>713664435There was an old MMO I bought back in the day called Auto Assault. I don't even think it was that good but I bought it used like a year before the servers closed. I played it some, put it down, and by the time I wanted to go back to it, it was gone. Some people did some work to get a private server up but it never seems to have completed. Now, it was a subscription-based MMO, so this initiative wouldn't cover it, and I can live with that - I got what I paid for and just didn't have the option to renew the subscription later. But kids today are gonna have that experience with more games, even ones they bought up front. I'm sure there are physical copies of games that don't work any more still out there on shelves in pawn shops and used goods stores. Why subject people to that kind of disappointment?
For a better example, Tribes 2 - it was no subscription, pay up front, multiplayer but had private server hosting. But it had a central authentication server, and when that went down, you couldn't log back in. The game only survives today because unlike Auto Assault, bypassing that central server was easy - you still have at least a few hundred people playing it regularly because of that. They were told to stop playing one of the best FPSes of all time and said fuck off.
It's hard to measure how many players a dead game would still have if it had been left playable. People move on because they have to, not because they want to.

The reason why so many devs get uppity when a game breaks the mold and finds success is because every lecture and GDC talk pushes conformity. Going against that is taken as a statement against the industry, and thus the egos/intelligence of the people working there. You cannot present any idea to upper management or even fucking professors without the edges being sanded down to a nub.
There is no reason for competent developers to work in games. Good programmers, artists, producers, musicians, etc. can all make vastly more money for fewer hours outside the industry. The brain drain problem is legitimate and the only major publisher not suffering from it is Nintendo (I am not joking).
The industry collapse isn't a coming inevitability, it's already happening and will only continue to get worse. Companies are hemorrhaging money and talent in biblical proportions. It's not going to be a complete reset like the 80s, but it is going to keep getting worse.
Gaming is a tiny fucking industry, and HR is its all-seeing eye. For some reason the white chicks that decide to work in games are on a level of crazy 10x that of anywhere else. God help you if you piss one of them off.

It's the clueless MBAs.
It's the narcissistic women.
It's the weak men who let their blue haired girlfriends pressure them into destroying the product.
Though if the aforementioned thread does exist, it's not even directly within the industry itself. It's the socialist apparatus that gives institutional investors a seemingly bottomless supply of money with which to control the leadership of game companies along with applying direct and indirect pressure on those who refuse to join the machine. But that's also not something that can be destroyed by tugging on one single thread.

>>713669231Im not talking about Thor playing a character, he is just that retarded and thin skinned. However DSP seems so cartoonishly stupid, bad at games, ebegs constantly in ways that make absolutely no sense and essentially makes a living from being a lolcow that there is a non-zero percent chance that he is actually playing a character like Caseoh or Bill Jensen. There is also the fact that apparently in ye olden days he actually was decent at street fighter tournaments and acted like a normal person.
>>713668989Yes they did, multiple times over multiple threads over multiple Youtube videos and streams.
He even got the concept of MMOs being made into single player games wrong as his own example as that is exactly what he said you couldn't do with FF14 and yet FF14 is doing just that making their story, dungeons and raids singleplayer to future proof it when it is taken offline.
Using FF14 as an example of an MMO was his choice as well and he couldn't even get that right. He doesn't know his asshole from his elbow.

It really is all about control. Companies don't want competition from older (arguably better) products so they sunset them to force paying customers to buy the new product. It's the same thing with how certain physical technology will have obsolescence baked into the hardware.
>>713669456I thought you would've known by now that game development companies pay for reviews, which means shilling here and on "news" websites. "News" websites also spend money on shills. /v/ is infected with shills, and it's why Hiroshimoot got rid of IP counts. /v/ regularly called out shills because the IP counter wouldn't go up, and companies were refusing to pay for the servers' upkeep until their "advertising campaigns" (shilling) were implemented in a way that's difficult, if not impossible, to keep track of by non-4chan mods and devs. So, the IP counter went away. Now you don't know how many people in this thread are genuine, and who's a paid "narrative framer".

>>713669327Fair. Gamedev really is a different world from standard dev work, it's hard to go from the mindset of everything having to be scalable, resilient and maintainable to essentially hard-coding a user experience. I'm just lucky I get enough leeway as site reliability to push for my opinions of not enforcing opinions in our codebases, I couldn't imagine being a codemonkey for a AAA studio where you get no agency or input. So Thor argues that you should never do placeholders ever since that might happen again. He offers no solution for what to put instead of the placeholder graphics. Actually I think he even suggested that in this case the loading screen placeholder should have been a black screen. So I guess don't have graphics when testing your games.

>>713669759HR
I have seen a company grow from around 50 to 400+ while i was in it, and it starts the moment you hire women in finance/legal/HR
One day you hang around with 5 people discussing how a game will look, bouncing ideas, planning shit, then another day some cunt in HR introduces a manager above you that will make things "flow better now that we have more people", then that manager will introduce another one under her that will "pass messages better", and that one will hire one under her, soon you are 3 steps removed from any decisions making. Blink and miss it.
And the more those women are ( who never have any game dev experience, they dont play games, they hate you and your field ), the worse things get.
Seen that company bubble images where management grows until a company project collapses? Basically thats what happens.
I have seen companies go public, and in reality it usually affects nothing as stock is either too split for majority voting option ever to gather, or is controlled by studio founders.
>>713670535That is some incredibly retarded logic. Just because some placeholder art got left in by accident doesn't then justify the refusal to usage of it entirely. That's throwing the baby out with the bath water.

4. Person A has 15 seconds for concluding statement.
5. Question is asked to Person B, etc.

>>713664435Atlus killed Shin Megami Tensei Imagine and SUED fans trying to revive it
I have played for years now, and still currently do, these two games that were killed by their initial developers, EA and Microsoft, these games being Age of Empires Online and Battleforge, both incredible co-op RTS games.
The previous developer teams actually provided the fans with toolkits to revive these games. These games didn't die because people lost interest. They didn't make these billion dollar companies enough revenue, so they outright just killed them.
Even as fan revival projects, they are getting thousands of players and have been expanded on by the fans with tons of new content.
>>713670780Everyone got refunds, would make it fine according to stop killing games rules.
>>713669776I think it would do some game developers good to truly spend some time learning engineering concepts. I'll be real, ideally, I'd prefer writing scalable, maintainable code, but there's been more than once I've thrown some truly vile shit out onto prod because the most important thing is always going to be speed when you work for users. The one thing I wish I could go back and redo though? It's where I began, I didn't know really where to start and I was the only one other than my manager on the team at that point.
Had I been a bit more knowledgeable about things, it would have saved me time, pain, and difficulty in the future, because where you start is going to be the backbone of everything.
Not everything needs to be planned out so meticulously, but some longer planning and software flow design will pay off a lot.
