Between races, if the tracks are adjacent, then instead of doing 3, or whatever the given number of laps for the track is, you instead drive between the two tracks, and then do one, usually partial lap of the track for the entire race. These are known as intermission tracks. The track selection following a race is heavily weighted towards adjacent tracks, and there's no way to to check what's adjacent to you before you pick it, you just have to know.

Up until now, the way out was Random. Picking Random would set you on a random track, that you do 3 laps of.
Now, Random just puts your vote to one of the tracks presented to vote, which are heavily weighted towards adjacent tracks, thus meaning an intermission track.

Intermission tracks are mostly disliked because they are straight lines, with few features. Think if every track was Mt Wario, except instead of Mt Wario, it was like. GameCube Luigi circuit, unfolded into a straight line, stapled to itself 3 times.

Intermissions don't work outside of Knockout Tour, there is no incentive or reason to be in the front on these kind of tracks because it's impossible to hold a lead just because they lack options to let you pull ahead. There's another online mode called knock out tour, which is the intermission tracks. but you get to do multiple of them back to back to back in the same race without a waiting/loading screen break. It's a lot more fluid in working like that.
Whereas the regular online races, you do 1 straight line section then go back to the menu screen for 2minutes to pick another track. It just ruins the flow compare to knock out tour.

CTGP is dying out and barely fills rooms anymore because Bean is such a giga-autist when it comes to this kind of thing. Retro Rewind is much better since it doesn't have draconian DRM and actually has players.

I actually like the open world and think it is well designed with a lot of interesting features to explore that you would never see playing the game normally. However, the intermissions don't do a good job of showing it off and many of them start to feel too similar while also preventing you from getting a good feel for the main courses. The structure of free roam also doesn't do anything to help push the player to explore since the reward is trivial and there is no guidance other than the number of ? panels remaining. It is really frustrating that Nintendo is trying to push it in a way that is only going to turn people off rather than putting in the last bit of effort that might make people actually appreciate the massive amount of effort they already put into the world design. I can only imagine how annoyed the people who designed and created the world are when the people directing the game are pushing players away from the work they put in.

It seems like Nintendo doesn't just want to dictate who is allowed to play their games but also HOW they are played.
Apparently they're really proud of those intermission segments so they couldn't stand the fact that most people still prefer the classic 3 lap track design.
They force this shit down your throats even though the open world and in between segments proved to be mostly boring to the players.

When 80-90% of the players pic random to get the classic 3 lap track then that should be more than enough of a message but instead Nintendo just doubles down because the intermission system is supposed to be the main focus of the game. They're like an autistic rage tard in denial after the main selling point of their game flopped.

I have never won an actual race by sitting in the back. I only manage to win by hanging in the top 10, but that is risky because its so easy to get mario karted in this game.
You get punished way harder by getting mario karted in 3 lap races. THAT is where bagging is most effective because there is less time to come back.
If you're in the final section of a normal race and you're in 18-24 then you're fucked unless there is a massive pileup.
