The new rage in the tech landscape is "creating an ecosystem"
Windows 8 was a failed attempt at trying this forgetting a laptop isn't a fucking tablet ruined it along with other compatability problems.
A successful version of this is Apple, their iPhone and products and how hard it is to leave once they lock you in, and can start fucking with the developers and making unreasonable demands to have access to their users.
Steam is kinda this in a way, but not cause they are trying to be an ecosystem, they just suck the least out of all the digital game store fronts.
Gabe has rightfully identified the threat from windows and after a failed attempt with the "steam machine" which had 0 pricing or quality control, they realized they had to build the hardware AND software themselves.
However, keep in mind steam is very excited to work with Lenovo Legion Go (which did build a straight up toe to toe competitor to the steam deck)
Lenovo takes on the building of the machines, and steam gets to spread SteamOS . Win win
They also have started creating compatability certifications for certain partners to run steamOS on their hardware.
If steam were trying to sell units of a console, you think they would be giving it away the secret sauce for free?
The units matter only in the sense that they need an active install base.
Other than that, they could care less if you buy an official deck that they lose money on, or but a Lenovo Legion with steam OS installed.
They don't even think about Nintendo.
They are competing with Microsoft to end the reign of their Monopoly and prevent a walled garden or end of life support issues (like when they had to kill windows 7 support) not sell the most digital doo dad boxes.
