I'm playing Xenoblade 2 and man the english subtitles don't match up most of the time.
They even went as far to change almost everyone's names.
What the fuck is wrong with these people?

The XC2 localization isn't butchered at all. They've changed a couple of things that make very little difference. The only two that even come to mind are Sheba's "harem"(JP) is now an "entourage"(EN) and Tora's H2H in Garfont is about "blushy-crushy"(EN) instead of "moe"(JP).

it should be, but mention this topic to any english fan and all you'll get is people blindly defending every change and then proceeding to insult the japanese version by calling it generic anime and saying the changes 'add identity'. at least when lurking on other sites i read shit like that all the time lmao. the utter disrepect the original xenoblade japanese versions get is insane

Okay so I'm new to the Xenoblade series so I lack a lot of context. I've been giving this site a quick glance and... what?

So I got into an argument with another anon about the whole JRPG "kill god" trope. And I argued that it doesn't apply to XC2 because Rex isn't enemies with Klaus. They actually reach an understanding. And that if anything, the true enemy of the game is Malos who'd be akin to Lucifer. Reading that apparently Christian symbolism was always a thing...I was right?!? It was supposed to be that way? Why the hell did they change it? What even was the point?

For the most part the localisation is pretty damn thoughtful. They changed some names but the name changes are almost exclusively for the sake of keeping the meaning the JP text had.

Like, Homura doesn't mean shit to anyone in the West. You have to be a really sweaty Weeb to know what Homura means without looking it up. So, Pyra, it's a nice fantasy name and keeps the meaning.

Hikari goes to Mythra as a similar logic. This one's actually a bit more clever since it ALSO references not just Light but the Zeus mythos, which ties in to the change from "Heavenly Holy Grail" to "Aegis."

Why did they change them from "Heavenly Holy Grail" to "Aegis"? Well, firstly because when JP cribs mythology from the West they're often extremely on the nose and "Heavenly Holy Grail" is about as on the nose as you can get. Like, come on, tell me the localisation is bad and explain to me why Homura and Hikari being referred to as the Holy Grail (I guess there's multiple now) gives you ANY meaning at all. It's utter nonsense, the Grail is a magical cup used to restore Britain, it's got absolutely fuckall to do with anything that happens in game.

Aegis is a far better mythos, ties them to the Zeus mythos, which gives us a name for Hikari that clearly refers to light in English (since again, only the sweatiest of Weebs know what Hikari means without looking it up), AND it fits perfectly with their actual role in the story, and their character journey. You'll sometimes see people call Pyra and Mythra Homura and Hikari, but I've never, ever, ever, ever seen anyone try force the concept of calling them The Holy Grail. Because it's fucking stupid.

Same logic with the 4 Mythical beasts. We simply don't have that in English, there's no equivalent to the 4 beasts. So instead, they made each one a culture's mythical beast and tied them to their own stories/lands. Dromarch being Welsh being Gormotti.

The XBC2 translation is done with care, I respect it a lot.

I understand people will just greentext and ignore this because "Hurr durrr" but, while there's a few things I think were toned down unnecessarily (eg. Gramps worrying Pyra was gonna whore herself out), the only things I can think of that were outright removed was the stuff about Tora creeping on Poppi.

Everything else is a localisation that's had some real thought put into it and can be justified.

I'm not really a fan of changing names, I would'a been fine with Homura, Hikari, Niyah, Kagatsuchi, etc. But, this isn't like when they change the names in a FE game and just make completely random thoughtless changes (Harold gets changed to Arthur because why not), the changes are logical and almost universally make the game read better for English speakers.

Like, I'll go to the fucking mat defending the choice to tone down the names of the Islands to make them not incredibly, stupidly, obnoxiously on the nose references to the 7 Deadly Sins/Heavenly Virtues. Firstly because it's the same classic "way too on the nose" stuff, where you have an island literally called Pride and another called Charity, but secondly because the way they're allocated doesn't make any fucking sense.

Gormotti is Gluttony? In what way? Nobody in the whole place is gluttonous. It's ridiculous. Surely "Gluttony" would be the goddamn Titan that eats everything? But apparently that one's Envy somehow. This is Persona5 levels of "We just assigned these things randomly".

Either way, point is the references are still there, Gormotti -> Gluttony. Leftheria -> Charity. Indol -> Indolance, etcetc. It's all still there. It's just not blatantly punching you in the face.

In short: Name changes are lame. But the XBC2 localisation is good. It's really good and extremely well done. It's Capcom Ace Attorney levels of well done.

The game is anime/otaku/weeb as fuck and the localizers get extremely embarassed to be associated with those creepy otaku weirdos, and so in their infinite wisdom thought they're doing the players a favor by making the game as un-anime as possible. And judging from the responses of people even on this very site (a site founded by a weeb to talk about weebshit, fucker even moved to Japan), they were right to do so.

I think all translators must eventually grow to hate their audience. Think about it, there is SOME amount of localization needed to avoid having some cringe shit where you're calling everyone -kun -chan engrish loanword here, but people don't agree on where the line is. Eventually you've got to wonder, if these people are so passionate about Japanese, why haven't they learned it yet? And you realize it's because they're morons. Sub-100 IQs who can't learn it at all, or midwits who learn a tiny bit and suddenly think they know everything. Anyone actually intelligent enough to learn Japanese no longer interacts with you since they just play the JP language original, so you're left talking to retards as your main audience. Grim stuff. Not to excuse translators who butcher things, but I think any translator, no matter how 'based' or smart, would eventually grow to hate their audience of retards.

I can understand like 70% of the Jap, but this is only enough to get the gist. Essentially I knew in the left side she was acting chuuni like something like "Dog mode switched on!". I asked Claude to fully translate:
-------
Looking at the Japanese text in the image:

Top panel: "ใญใ‡ใญใ‡ ใ‚ธใƒผใ‚ฏใ‚ฆ? ใƒใƒŠใ‚‚ใฃใจ็”˜ใˆใฆใ„ใ„ใ‚ใญ?"
This roughly translates to: "Hey, hey, Zieg? Can Hana act more spoiled/clingy?"

Bottom panel: "ใƒใƒŠใฎ็ง˜ใ‚ใ‚‰ใ‚ŒใŸ่ƒฝๅŠ› ็ฃ้จŽๅฃซ็Šฌใƒใƒผใ‚ธใƒงใƒณใงใ™ใ‚‚"
This translates to: "Hana's hidden ability - Beast Knight Dog Version"

You're right that she's speaking in first person, referring to herself as "Hana" (ใƒใƒŠ). The meme is funny because instead of translating the actual Japanese dialogue about her wanting to act spoiled and revealing her "dog mode" transformation ability, the translator just went with literal dog sounds - "Woof woof? Grrr... Woof woof wooooof?" and "Woof woof woof woof Dog Mode woof."

It's a classic example of lazy localization where they completely gave up on the actual meaning and just made the character bark like a dog!
-----
Note, Claude wrote that dismissive last line, not me. Though he probably went by the title of the image.

You can drop -san completely, you can often drop formal -kun and -sama, but you absolutely cannot drop affectionate -kun and -chan. It's like the difference between a character in a Western work being on first name vs last name basis, except the "close friends" tier in Japan is actually subdivided into two tiers: [First name + affectionate honorific] and even closer [First name only].

"Holy grail" was localized as "aegis"

When the origin of the name was revealed in torna, guess what the object was that malos/pyra were named after (hint: not a shield). Pope was changed to praeter which is confusing, God was changed to architect (this fits more with klaus's actual role but that characters shouldn't know that), and im sure there's more.

Changing the name Byakko, a white tiger, to Dromarch, a wolf, doesn't keep the meaning, it just makes the name more confusing to the small amount of people that know where the name Dromarch comes from.

"Holy Grail" does a better job of conveying that the characters are important divine artifacts than "Aegis"

Also, I find it funny how Xenoblade 2 localization defenders will say, "changing Homura to Pyra is good because it makes the meaning more obvious" but then also say, "changing the Titan names is good because the original names were too obvious"
