Sticking to humanoid greatly simplifies making game assets if you have a lot of gear, since you can reuse most of the work. Especially since playable characters are usually expected to have a higher level of polish. Something like an optional playable centaur race is a shitload of additional art and animation work that will likely not benefit a small percentage of players. They have a hard enough time just offering short races.

Its not exactly the same different body shapes, but I like how in Pillars of Eternity the "Godlike" race couldn't actually wear any type of helmet because they had big horns. I feel like they could just do something similar with weird races. Stuff like snake people, Driders and Centaur could not be able to equip pants, for example.
Also I feel like considering the fact that most fantasy games already have enemies you can fight that aren't bipedal Humanoids, they could just transfer some animations over to a player race. If they already put in the effort to animate horses, just cut of the horse head, put a legless Human on top, tweek it a little and boom, you got a playable centaur race.

It’s still harder than you’re thinking. In part because playable characters also usually need animations for a lot more situations than monsters. Plus that’s still a lot more work than just disallowing hats. The places where you’re most likely to have exotic races are in games where they just don’t show gear aside from maybe weapons. Old jrpgs for example. I guess Tyranny is a more recent example since Kills-in-Shadow just doesn’t get to wear anything.

It would be a dream game to be honest. Being able to make/RP a character from primitive to civilized races, and play from the tiniest species like fairies to 9-foot ogres.

But I think it mostly has to do with bodymorphing all the armors with all the different bodytypes and sizes. That's why a lot of RPGs are better off how they were in old school MMOs/RPGs, where the armor are PNG templates over the body, or don't go so overall complex adding 500 different varieties of armor shit/visuals.

I think a lot of people miss out on this. Worldbuilding is important, but it's equally important to understand that sometimes shorthand is good and that you don't need to make everything completely original. People who try their best to not make something which reeks of Tolkien inevitably shackles them to his works anyway because they're specifically and deliberately trying to avoid imitating him.

Outside of something like Rockstar, budgets are finite so spending all that time for non-humanoid races perhaps means a great many fewer enemies animated or some such. It's because everyone already knows what these fantasy races are, and so the worldbuilding is already done for you in the form of player expectation. This can be especially important if the player can select from multiple races for their character, because that way they immediately know what they're getting into with each race without having to read some lengthy lore blurb about your original races.
