Is this your first gacha game? Yes, you can theoretically "beat the game" using F2P units, just like in most of these gambling simulators. But it's just like that Wizardry mobile game where you're HIGHLY expected to pay and roll for the special characters because eventually the new content is going to cockblock you from succeeding unless you're getting the ultra meta overpowered rolls. You can beat an opponent using objectively better weapons that are purchased with real money with a shitty f2p starter weapon in a p2w online game.
Just because a f2p player can beat a player that's buying an advantage doesn't mean that p2w doesn't exist in that game.
Similarily in a singleplayer game, even if you beat all the content for free, just being able to buy power makes a game p2w.

This is the original definition of p2w, and maybe that's changed over the years since paying to progress and buy items has become so ubiquitous in games nowadays. That's how I've always seen it, I've kind of given up on p2w in singleplayers at this point though. Baton passes function differently, navigators work differently, the way you build teams is different, etc. Imo it's fun, but I would caution against following the "this is literally just P5 but with gacha tacked on" narrative. Play it and see how you like it.

I will say that the endgame/super hard content is where having meta builds and getting either good pulls or paying irl money starts to become a bit more necessary. The satisfaction of beating difficult optional content just isn't the same as the single player SMT games where you can build teams on your terms, this is gacha so team building isn't on your terms, it's on the gacha system's. If you need a character and you just never pull them, there's not much you can do other than pay money or maybe get a free handout once in a blue moon and hopefully get them then. tl;dr fun game, don't expect copypaste the same thing as P5, don't expect not to feel cucked on the gacha mechanics if you're planning on engaging with the super difficult endgame. Lloyd and Rean interacting was somewhat fine it was when the fucking Sky cast turned up and it was nothing but OH MY COULD IT BE THE LEGENDARY X I'VE HEARD SO MUCH ABOUT YOUR REPUTATION.
