I really like the facial mocap in Control. A lot of people seemed to find them weird and uncanny, but I found them very expressive. Lots of subtlety and detail. To the extent that when I saw Jesse's actor performing live action in Quantum Break, it was like seeing a game character come to life, the resemblance and accuracy was remarkable. Right down to the asymmetry, the little involuntary tics, the way each muscle twitches, everything. Not every character in the game looks this good but a lot do.

Why would I play any other way? It honestly shocks me when I'm just driving around and see someone put up a ladder or climbing spike or whatever when you don't need to ever use those tools. Are there people that seriously use the floating carriers for example? Fucking why?

By the time you even get stuff like that you already have the trike at least, and the truck, so why would anyone ever use floating carriers? For a walking sim as people always call death stranding, 90% of my time is spent driving around a truck. The only disadvantage (so far) is having to hop out of the truck to collect stuff, a minor annoyance considering the amount of time it saves me driving a ton of stuff around at once vs. having to drive back and forth.

I played the directors cut of the original so I'm not sure if it was different in the base game, but no you can drive the truck anywhere.

Now, in death stranding 2 it is a little more difficult to drive the truck around, but still possible to even climb up rock walls and steep slopes with it, but there are some limitations I've noticed so far compared to the original. In the original game I could literally drive up all the mountains in the game in the truck, even if it slowed you down a bit going up a steep hill it still had the torque to get up very difficult terrain and I ended up just taking it everywhere. But some slopes in death stranding 2 have sand which impedes you getting up, and when it's raining you can't get up steep slopes at all in the truck as you will just slide down. Maybe later in the game though there will be more advanced ones but I'm still pretty early on in the game. I'm still using the truck for everything as it's just convenient.

You didn't even try? I was driving it around everywhere in DS1, like everywhere, even in the snowy mountains where you think you wouldn't be able to drive it up to. For example that one guy who lived up at the very top of the mountains on a cliff and was probably the most difficult guy to find, the first porter or prepper whatever he was called you could drive the truck up there if you knew the route to take.

The truck was actually better than the trike because like you said, you hit a rock in the trike and it just bounces back, the truck can just plow right over most of the rocks in DS1 just slowing down a bit.

Also, the easiest way to build out the roads in general is to use the truck anyways, load it up with all the supplies you need to build them and just drive around completing them in one trip. That's what I've been doing right now in DS2 and I've already built most of the roads on the west side of the map doing this.

The way I played was to just drive to a bunker, get all the orders I didn't do yet (except the timed ones) and just load them all in the truck, drive to the nearest bunker, get all their orders load them all in the truck to the point I would have like 20+ orders in the truck at once and just drive around from bunker to bunker delivering them with no damage. It was kind of stupid but it was the most efficient way to play the game.

It goes beyond what tool you choose. There are lots of variables ranging from what route you will be taking, how many deliveries you choose to do at once, whether you pick stuff on the way or not, and so on.

Obviously the statement that no two people have ever played the same is very hyperbolic, but it is definitely a game with a lot of variance. And I think it contrasts with MGSV, which IN THEORY there's supposed to be a lot of variance in how people play, but in practice everyone plays the same. Meanwhile DS doesn't look like it has that much variety but in practice it does.

You can see your own footsteps so the game keeps track of them. I assume it uploads them to the server you belong to and if enough people have footsteps there it starts generating a small dirt path that gets bigger as more people take the same route.

I finished DS2 not to long ago but honestly I'm really underwhelmed. This is coming from someone who absolutely loved DS1 btw. I really expected more on the story side of things, yet it was so hard to get immersed at all because the desolate feeling from DS1 is gone and it gets so bizarrely goofy at times in a really jarring way. Its a fucking comedy most of the time.

Gameplay wise it's really neat, I love the coffin boards and other small additions, but I do feel like things like the DHV actually take away from the atmosphere of the game in favour of convenience. Something about the game feels off to me in a way and I can't really grasp what it is exactly that has me not really loving the game like I did DS1.

Maybe if the plot hadn't been about Sam's daughter dying and him going through grief I could have swallowed the shift in tone but arguably I think the game should've reflected his mental state a lot more. Dude was actually going schizo and hallucinating, yet the game is fucking comedic in places where it just didn't need to be. (Take the Charlie reveal... what the fuck was that about?)

And honestly it's less about the atmosphere change for me, but more that the entire plot feels underwritten and not very engaging at all. Change isn't bad but things CAN be changed to be worse, and I think DS2 is an example of that. Tonally DS2 is just bad, confusing, and completely at odds with itself.

I think it has Rambo 1 to Rambo 3 syndrome desu, DS1 is very uncompromising about being a walking SIM where combat is to be avoided at all costs. DS2 straight up encourages you to take out bandit camps, I've got like 8 different guns and I'm only like 10 hours into the game. In this same timespan in DS1 you'd still be stuck with the bola gun.

Yeah, but DS2 really does make it even easier to shit on bandits by making every gun chambered in nonlethal rubber bullets as default. In DS1, guns were explicitly lethal and clearing out a bandit camp with lethal force meant you also had to do corpse cleanup. I thought that was super neat, but its clear DS2 wants combat to be less harsh.

DS isn't really about meaningful storytelling as much as it is about immersing the player in its idiosyncratic world (just like MGS) with super high def graphics and celebrities. Which is most big movies so who cares. But basically, Kojimbo can make it as dumb as he fucking wants (and he sure did) as long as he makes the dumb shit look good. Like giving Tommy Wiseau a billion dollars and arming him with competent designers and some editors.

I went exploring off the network to look at scenery with just a bunch of ladders and ropes no weapons. I really felt like i was in the middle of nowhere. Theres no fast travel and no way to get more gear. I rappelled down the side of a cliff and walked along a big lake into where a mountain meets the ground in this huge flat area. (Bottom of pic related) I came across a big tentacle mosnter in it and it inevitably killed me ehen all i had to shoot it with was yhe bola gun and i blew i fuck huge crater into the landscape when i died. I then wandered back to the ship back on the network and felt like i came home after a big adventure.

I was also stoned and this was the only time being stoned didnt make the game annoying and hard to play. The weirdness of it all made everything kinda unbelievable.
