Self-inserting and projecting your gender onto the Undertale humans was pretty much always the case. I'd argue Mario Galaxy 2 was when it started getting soulless. While it was a good game, it was a still a rehash that removed a lot of the things that made Galaxy 1 interesting so it was kinda the end of the line of the Mario franchise IMO. And yes i don't think Odyssey was all that good either. It felt hollow, never had the urge to replay it after i beat it.
