Self-inserting and projecting your gender onto the Undertale humans was pretty much always the case. You were supposed to choose the name you liked best for "the fallen human" (usually yours), play the game thinking you were a self-insert, and then get double whammied by the fact that not only were you never actually playing as the human you named at the start, and that the human you named was also a fucked up kid who died way before Frisk ever entered the picture, and their only mentions paint a very clear picture of someone who isn't a self-insert.
Even in Genocide, Chara's less of a self-insert and instead more of a meta commentary on completionists, but the intent was very much to make Chara feel like a parallel of you all the same.
But tranny revisionism got mad at this simple meta setup, and now you're literally Hitler if you try to project a gender onto Frisk or Chara.
