Omg this, so much this. I'm sure its even more frustrating when you're working for one of the biggest companies in the world. Layoffs on this scale are always ridiculous and cruel but even more insane given how much money they have and how much they were willing to sling on acquisitions. They have the money to keep them, no excuse.

Xbox used to be a money losing side-project for Microsoft that could afford to lose a few billion each year just in case they ever hit it really big.
Then Xbox bought Activision for 68 billion dollars and MS decided that losses were no longer acceptable, when spending at this scale you're either profitable or you don't get to exist.
They looked at the numbers and saw that the entire old Xbox division was wildly unprofitable while the new Activision side was wildly profitable. Candy Crush alone makes more profit in a year than Xbox ever did. So they're shutting down the old Xbox in favor of just making Call of Duty and Diablo instead.

They could've just exited the hardware & gamepass business right after getting those studios & became a publisher, would've saved a ton of money. Instead they're going to do everything within their power to maximize their losses making retarded decisions that will obviously fail then ultimately end up becoming just a publisher anyway.

That didn't happen until microsoft made the kinect & abandoned their core audience forever. 360 was absolutely dominating the ps3 until they gave up & the ps3 only became decent when it copied all the features of the xbox years after the fact.

I'm a fan for several reasons:
One: because I use Linux.
Two: the Steam platform is the best, hands down, in terms of features and prices (because you can get cheap keys on third party sites).
Three: My account is over two decades (21 years) old, and I own several hundreds of games, so I have a vested interest in the store continuing to do well and thrive.

That said, Valve isn't without their issues. I like their laissez faire attitude a lot but they're somehow extra tough on Japanese/anime hentai games and even stuff like Key to Home (which has no porn) and Dungeon Travelers. I think their double standards are bigoted and racist.
The same attitude applies to their games which means shit like Deadlock is just dead now because people decide what they want to work on and I'm guessing everyone wants to be involved in HL3.
Also I was there during the paid mods thing and that was an absolute clusterfuck; they should've started with free mods first and then implemented a system to support devs.

There is no fucking way they are surviving their tenure at Microsoft for much longer without at least some severe layoffs, even though Grounded is apparently a golden goose (Or at least the first one was)

Microsoft is clearly playing this as coldly as possible and the industry is extremely volatile. It's a matter of when, not if.

Microsoft are way bigger kikes than EA at this point.

GP was built on the idea it will estabilish itself as the "Netflix of Gaming" which means it will be so desired you can not sell any gaming hardware without it. Just like how you can't sell any media playing device without Netflix. So Sony, Nintendo, Steam all would have been forced t adopt it and pay a cut to MS while their own stores would lose sales. So Game Pass was built to be give extreme value and operate on a loss for many years in the hope when it will become the definitive subscription they can jack up the price freely.
Now that it didn't happen - because other platforms resisted it and only makes sense for the Xbox userbase - they already made it a way worse deal than before, though it still worth it for Xbox users. Too bad it is unsustainable and the investors want their money now so the Xbox platform will die with it.

XBOX "Next Gen"
-Prebuilt PC
-Option to play as Xbox or PC mode
-24GB VRAM
-Somehow will cost $500
When you launch Steam, you don't pay the online toll pass for Xbox. When Microsoft builds this, it costs over a thousand dollars. The closest OEM prebuilt with 24GB VRAM cost $2000. So the master plan is to build $2000 XboxPC hybrids, then sell at $500, so that people can pirate games, play Steam games, and don't pay Xbox Live Gold sub. Third world believes this.

Why are you bringing up studios that died due to EA's mismanagement and greed 20 years ago in a thread about Microsoft's hiring (and firing) practices today?
Westwood and Bullfrog died because they made niche as fuck games that didn't sell as well as EA wanted.
These studios are dying because they're making shitty games that didn't sell as well as Microsoft wanted.
Completely different studios making completely different kinds of games under completely different market conditions with completely different publishers.

As I said Game Pass is only really makes sense for Xbox users, or you could say console users where you are forced to use the built in store and bend the knee to the pricing of the platform owner.
This is why MS never discloses actual subscriber numbers, especially not the PC side. The main problem with GP IMO you need to blindly eat up what you get from it. Sure you get day 1 games but most of them are mediocre. And this is what kills it outside the ecosystem.

Yeah, I believe there was a big internal push to make owned studios collaborate and having the capture rig would've benefitted more groups. Coalition handles UE5 implementation and optimize support for a bunch of other studios for example, that's why they aren't making any fucking games

The real question is will Microsoft keep them because of Forza Tech or will they gut them and put what remains in Playground games. The problem with Turn 10 is that they're no longer needed when Microsoft is no longer competing with Sony. Forza Motorsports only existed because of Grand Turismo, with Forza Horizon surpassing the main series, why bother making any new mainline games?

Incredible how Microsoft could allocate a billion dollars (a fraction of their yearly revenue) to their game division and genuinely revitalize the entire industry by subsidizing AA-level studios into pumping out a nice amount of games over the years but instead they buy studios and then shut them down because they are not releasing guaranteed-profits slop and/or bog them down with internal procedures and corporate demands, all the while only investing in vidya because they really want to make profits despite already making fuck-hueg profits from their other businesses. Corporate greed can't comprehend a creative medium like vidya, just like how casuals can't comprehend that a corporation could suck without SJWs or jews at the helm.

It doesn't matter if the PS3 outsold the 360 in the end, the 360 was ultimately the major console of the generation which is why Wii60 was something very common. It also got objectively better versions of games as a whole with very few exceptions compared to the PS3 and it took forever for the PS3 to get anything worth a damn at all. Literal years.

Yes, after Microsoft started delving into the Kinect and flushed their brand down the toilet in the last year or two the PS3 started to get a leg up on it, but it was absolutely the Wii60 generation for many people. The PS3 was an afterthought until around Uncharted 2's release.

180 dollars a year is cheaper than buying just 3-4 new releases a year, especially considering looking 80 dollar price tags.
I'd rather pay more and have my game on Steam, but game pass is still a good deal if you don't plan on replaying any games later... Even then, that game will probably be on sale somewhere by the time you want to play it again.

Yes, in 2019, Microsoft started forcing their developers to start making extremely woke video games, if they make an attractive female character, they must make her look less attractive and make her physically as strong as a male. They were trying to force this on third parties as well in 2024, but third parties weren't having it

XBox has basically been a failure since Peter Moore got the boot (only time XBox really did anything). It was mismanaged but once they spent almost 70 billion to buy Activision, all eyes have been on them. Now their results actually matter and they have nothing to show for it. They're trimming the fat now to look more profitable but most likely the whole thing will be killed except MAYBE Activision due to the entire market declining and XBox never really being viable anyway

It was an XBox franchise till the PS4. Haven't seen the sales but it seems to be on the downswing. It was declining when Activision was independent but the double whammy of the market declining overall and the merger taking forever kind of killed it. I also suspect it may have something to do with millennials getting older and zoomers preferring Fortnite over COD. Might explain all the goofy skins we see in COD now.

Xbox fags be like
>Yeah we got our ass whopped in the typical console market
>BUUUT we're gonna kick the living shit out of Nintendo and Valve in the portable handheld market
>And we're allowing you to install Steam on our upcoming prebuilt PC Xbox
>So even though we're not getting money from online subscriptions anymore, Valve won't share 30% Steam revenue from games sold on there, our platform will be subsidized by magical aliens
>It'll just work
I still don't understand how Microsoft plans to build and sell next gen prebuilt machines that will be above 16GB VRAM for under 1000 dollars. The cost of a modern day GPU that's 4K capable and scalable with headroom for Raytracing and AI upscaling aren't cheap, VRAM is something AMD and NVIDIA do not want to give away even at 300 dollars. I know Xbox fags are the literal retards of /v/, so work with me here. Imagine you're building a gaming PC for a friend, you even build it for free, and you give it away for free. Your friend buys games on Steam and you make money off this either. OEMs selling gaming laptops and ASUS selling Rog Ally don't do this, lol, they make a profit on the expensive hardware.

Fucking Xboners are the dumbest people in gaming right next to their cult leader /r/Xbox Phil Spencer. Like I understand you're emotionally attached to Xbox but come on dude, gotta call it what it is. I don't see that digital store lasting long either with the way costs are going. Upkeep isn't free in the corporate world. Third worlders think those servers maintain themselves.

360 was better for the first two years, but even by 2008, PS3 was already mogging it in terms of library. PS3 was way better hardware, full BC out the box, blu-ray player, way better hardware, free online, tons of amazing exclusives.

360 was just coasting off PS3's blunder early on with pricing, as the latter half of the gen, its library was absolutely dire and Kinect floundered. I bought a 360 in 2005 and enjoyed it, but got the PS3 MGS4 bundle in 2008 and never looked back

Yes and no. Not really a Playstation victory in the traditional sense. It's not like was Sony was operating a cutthroat generation against Nintendo and Xbox, if anything Playstation has been on auto-pilot relying on 3rd party exclusivity. Nintendo didn't kill Xbox either since they don't even acknowledge Xbox exists. So it was Phil Spencer walking to work one day and saying they're going third party and sawed off his entire hardware division legs.

A big chunk of this is because the normal feedback loop of the gaming press got completely separated from actual gamer purchases, gamer interest, and became entwined with advocacy people like SBI to the point where they're gaslighting the companies.

It's why so many articles were celebrating a "return to form" on on some of the biggest turds ever, and part of why the fami and steam charts got so much more attention. Because the press was flat out lying about the reception and success of a bunch of these products.

The gaming press, and the industry groups and even forbes, bloomberg, and the like are telling them that this is great stuff, blue water markets. And they dive in to billions of dollars of committment and are cratering.

These guys will get hit with layoffs because they can lead in some areas while some are needed for help in development of games

The rest won't be touched because Microsoft already dealt with them. The rest fit Microsoft's multiplat strategy. Microsoft will keep Game Pass going for now until the fail to defeat Valve and the PlayStation dies then they'll go full publisher.

>PS3 was already mogging it in terms of library
No, it wasn't, because the majority of its library was worse than on the 360. It had more exclusives, sure, but come on now.
>PS3 was way better hardware
Except in practice it accomplished nothing and the performance was almost always worse. Like 99% of multiplats were objectively better on 360 by a considerable margin even when they were Japanese-developed. Things like NieR were better on the 360 because it had a native save menu, faster loading, better performance, and I know there were a few other things. Asura's Wrath on PS3 had screen tearing so severe it was impossible not to ignore. Dragon's Dogma on 360 had worse AA while PS3 had massive screentearing but better AA (Might have been the opposite).
Major western titles like RDR1 had not only better performance but actually had grass on the ground.

If you were buying anything but exclusives on the PS3 you were objectively having a worse experience across the board. Even things like The Orange Box were missing updates the 360 had, so you had things like walking through walls and cloaked backstabs in TF2 on PS3 whereas on 360 those were patched.
>full BC out the box

Xbox prebuilt PC OEM
>No way for Microsoft to make money from online subscription paywall
>When you buy a game on Steam, Microsoft doesn't get the 30% baseline royalty cut (EpicGameStore Timmy is BIG mad about this forever)
>By having a Windows PC mode and Steam compatibility, it will need to be an actual modern day competitive and PC parts are expensive (4K, a lot of VRAM)
>This will compete with Valve, OEM, Nintendo, Sony at the same time
The PS5 and Series X have 16GB VRAM unified, the next generation will be 24-32. Going to 24 on the conservative end, a 24GB GPU today costs 1000 dollars. How many PC parts are left to build the PC Xbox hybrid and how much is Microsoft going to sell at at loss, without a subsidize model.

Since the console itself is supposedly backwards compatible with Xbox One/Series, it will have more than 16GB VRAM. Our GPU selection therefore will be 2027 and I want everyone to think about how long we've been on 8GB VRAM cards as the baseline. 10 years. Consider how stingy AMD/NVIDIA are with VRAM and what deals Microsoft/Sony will get going forward. Although for Sony they probably don't have to worry a lot for the PS6 specs, since Xbox isn't a competitor anymore they don't have to chase high end power to compete with Nintendo.

It's so weird to talk about this because in theory Xbox could do something with their 50+ game studios and their trillion dollars of liquidity, but they just went third party after buying Activision and are slow walking their exit to become a PC OEM third party with a boutique Xbox ultra vinyl niche business.

I guess i should have been more detailed. Xbox WAS a way to get you into the ecosystem, but like the other anon said
>>714107303 when you are spending this much you cannot just be a side project (and yes to a company as large as ms, xbox might as well be a side project). So i guess they are just gonna let it wither and be done with it. The wildcard here is Steam. Steam is doing like a reverse xbox, they know they can't rely on MS , because eventually MS wants more people to only download from MS store (couple of years back i remember rumors about Windows making it harder to install things not from the ms store), the issue here is that Valve wants people using Linux because they know MS might start cutting them out at any moment.

Microsoft has a lot of redundant series that were made to fight the PlayStation, they have to trim the fat and keep what others don't make. Small studios though, those are definitely getting the ax since Microsoft only needed them for early days Game Pass.

man imagine an alternate timeline where Xbox actually got its shit together.

>Release Xbox one
>Very offline friendly, no DRM crisis
>Manufacturing moves to the USA
>Really good launch lineup
>Halo 5 revolutionizes FPS games
>Halo infinite actually lives up to the title and has everything from past Halo games and more. Open world is pure kino. And the story is heartfelt
>Gears is also awesome again, revolutionizes TPS.
>Forza doesn't have dogshit microtransactions and is a really fun racing game with tons of unlockables
>Purchase all the companies they purchased, become a powerhouse
>Xbox literally makes every year since 2013 similar to how Nintendo made 2017 but this time for the west
>Really cool blizzard spinoffs get made
>Bring banjo back in a huge way, is the Mario of xbox. Mainline and spinoffs that rival Mario
>We would be on elder scrolls 8 by now
>Fallout 5 is pure kino and easily BTFOS new vegas
>Some of the sexiest characters in gaming.
>TLDR: Absolute powerhouse in western gaming and actually American first.

Man what a shit timeline we're in.

Doom already did that, Halo offers nothing anymore but a singleplayer campaign which is probably why Microsoft is keeping Halo and Master Chief alive, we'll see on multiplayer. That became too much like COD and Microsoft owns COD now so why should they continue with Halo's multiplayer when that's not even popular, same with Gears of War.

I heavily believe all the studios on UE5 are getting the Halo Studios treatment. Teams get gutted and will mainly lead and create over develop. Third parties will develop the entire games along with temps. Most of Microsoft's games will be outsourced, Microsoft's own next gen console will most likely be the last one they make themselves like Sony's PS6.

Nope.
The problem with those companies is that they are full-on western companies. Even Sony took the western pill and is now facing western consequences.

It turns out you can't run a successful industry by investing full-on into jewish money tricks to make your stock look strong and healthy. At some point, you have to make games people like and the west genuinely, 100% hates video games and the people who play and buy them.

HD. You can trace the decline of the industry by the adoption of HD graphics. it necessitates gigantic budgets and dev times, smaller teams get left in the dust. Those who'd have otherwise been small-time devs flood the indie scene, which produces a tidal wave of shovelware. Fast forward a few years, all of a sudden games cost millions to make but their value is debased to <$0.99. Only way out is to make a more expensive game and charge more, which makes the problem worse, and necessitates even bigger, more expensive games. Forever. Until it all collapses because nobody spends on anything but the same few F2P titles anymore.

The Initiative is a weird one. They were formed specifically to be Microsoft's answer to Naughty Dog or Crystal Dynamics - basically making the Xbox division the sorts of big AAA moviegames that Sony had so much success with. M$ were obviously putting a lot of money into them since they started immediately recruiting staff with big name studio CVs like Insomniac, Sony Santa Monica, Rockstar, Blizzard and the original Kojima Productions. Then they proceeded to do nothing for years, have huge personnel turnover and then get dumped on to a mediocre-looking Perfect Dark reboot that has to be finished by of all studios, Crystal Dynamics, after M$ decide to close the studio.

Would love to know the behind the scenes shit that went on there.

It's what's going to happen to Sony's portfolio as well.
The entire triple-A economic model has outpaced itself miles beyond being able to sustain itself. 'The big two' are only now starting to realize that their race against each other to consolidate studios has only served to tied the noose around their neck. So they panic: "Get rid of it!" "Shut it down!" etc.

We are on the eve of an absolute bloodletting.

Meanwhile, GabeN is probably laughing his ass off - as Steam is thriving with indies and A / double-A titles that remain profitable and sell well enough to keep their studios and publishers afloat. He wins by having done nothing. Again.

Shareholders started applying the infinite growth meme to video games. Also we're still feeling the after effects of COVID when developers/publishers started massively overhiring, thinking that the spike in people buying games/DLC thanks to being stuck at home would somehow persist on even after we were past the worst of the pandemic.

The industry is condensing and fixing itself. This will either make or break Microsoft and Sony depending on their decisions going forward. My guess for Microsoft is prioritizing series that makes them money that offer something different that doesn't compete with their other studios while outsourcing a lot. Sony's Japan branch will gut their American branch and make more studios like Asobi returning to their roots. Both will be publishers offering something different and unique. Nintendo and Valve will benefit from this greatly.

I wouldn't say it's just HD, it's more of the lack of dev tool progress, chasing retarded tech, and also I blame the Internet way more for things like DLC and shit existing, which I think ruined gaming way harder. HD wouldn't be so bad if the industry just stuck with it for a little bit longer. And I think we had some very kino games by the end of the 360Wii Generation. I think it's moreso 8th that still needed some time to cook.

2007 killed the industry for the worst, 2020 killed the industry for the better. We went AAA after 2007, now we're going A and AA after 2020. The good news about this is Microsoft's and Sony's ambitions will be locked down as publishers never growing to that level again.

Everyone points to the Xbone reveal as the beginning of the end for the Xbox brand, but it started earlier than that. Really the first big crack that began to show was with Don Mattrick trying to chase the Wii's success with the original Kinect. Look at the games Microsoft were funding pre and post-2010.

I'd say Peter Moore could've saved them had he stuck around but the RRoD was on his watch, so who really knows.

My guess is what this anon says. There's probably a massive schism in Microsoft Corpos between soulless suits that want nothing to do with videogames and consoles because they got their own sectors gutted when Microsoft pushed to get into vidya VS Souless suits that only get into vidya because it's profitable and
shut down everything that doesn't print money for them or prints money for someone that's not them. Zero sum game and all that. There's probably a lot of Microsoft corpos that are salivating at the idea of Xbone wounding so they can kill it off for good. They buy and kill companies that work so they don't have competition, it wouldnt be a stretch to think that doesn't happen between subsectors of Megacorporations

>Sony however is in a very weird limbo state as their hardware is the only thing people seem to want but if that's the case you may as well be making budget PCs without the Playstation branding.

Add to that, the legal case against them running in the Netherlands.
Where the Dutch are trying their own bid at Epic-vs-Apple and forcing Sony to open up the PlayStation platform to third party storefronts and sideloading.
Thing is-- they're in the EU and have the Digital Markets Act on their side for it. All it takes is the EU Commission catching wind of the hub-bub, looking at the case brief and deciding to use their privilege to - despite PlayStation maybe not reaching all required thresholds - mark the platform and PSN as a gatekeeper regardless.

And then Sony is basically cooked.
They either open up PlayStation, or can bugger off out of Europe.
Europe is basically 50%~60% of their install base, so they can't afford to lose that. (Nor can they afford to give it to PC or Nintendo.)
So they're stuck. They'll have to open up the platform.

At which point, as the PS5 basically runs on a modified BSD, Valve is probably going to jump in and bring Steam and Proton to PlayStation and is going to utterly ream Sony's ass -- basically swallowing the platform and taking it from them - whole.

The fat man wins.

The fact that Americans abandoned Sony after the PS2 for the Xbox 360 was incredibly based. It made Sony become fiercly competitive in the American market, and that still shows today.
Meanwhile here in Europe, everyone will drag themselves through burning hot coals and fields of broken glass to get the latest playstation with the latest fifa, no matter the cost. They know we're brand loyal so they use us to subsidize the American market which is more volatile and can abandon them at any time.

You're assuming there's a plan. Microsoft is a colossus of thousands of people, which moves with all the speed and dexterity of a crippled panda bear. There is no plan, only today's decisions and tomorrow's rationalizations about why they were good. Every big company is like this btw.

I guess it's no surprise that the PlayStation brand is such a big deal in Europe considering how much emphasis they put on advertising at football games. Watch any Champions League match and like a third of the ads you'll see are for PlayStation stuff.

>Nobody gave a shit about performance like that
Bayonetta was literally unplayable on PS3, yes they did. It was a well known fact the PS3 versions of multiplats were terrible back then because I literally lived through that period and ignored PS3 versions for that very reason despite being an idort.

Eurogamer had the Digital Foundry guys before they founded Digital Foundry doing comparisons all the time.
https://www.eurogamer.net/digitalfoundry-red-dead-redemption-face-off
TheSixthAxis directly covered the RDR1 thing.
https://www.thesixthaxis.com/2010/05/20/read-red-redemption-ps3-vs-360/

In general there was no reason to buy a PS3 version of a multiplat unless Sony was moneyhatting content like Bamham's Joker DLC, Assassin's Creed's random DLC here and there, or the Dead Space DLC, but even then the 360 versions had constant advantages like the better version of Bamham, the AC games performing worse on the PS3 and the DLC being inconsequential at best, and Dead Space on PS3 being the worst version for a long time. Tons of EA games were piss poor on the PS3. This isn't even getting into the fact that by default the expectation with any PS3 multiplat was frame drops, muddy visuals, and no AA. Every single time.

360 also had random third-party exclusives like Bioshock, Mass Effect, Star Ocean 4, and Alone in the Dark as simple examples that PS3 didn't get until years after the fact. Even when they got ported to PS3 they were typically worse. Bioshock for example was not only at a lower resolution but ran worse despite that.

Funny you mention Bayo's PS3 port since Shu Yoshida was furious about that for years afterwards, feeling like Sega and Platinum had stooged them. Kamiya said Platinum pitched Bayo 2 to "all the big publishers", so I'd wager Sony was one of them and I could see it falling apart over that.

HD development cracked the back of most companies. Every PC developer outside of Blizzard, Valve, Paradox and Stardock, collapsed or switched to making console games, like Bethesda.
>I mean video game companies in general were doing well in that gen
You were young at the time and are applying survivor bias. Valve and Nintendo were doing well enough, so they survived and you think about them today. Taito, Looking Glass and ones that were left behind are largely forgotten.

Because steam is the best platform. It's really that simple. nobody cares about valve's actual games except nostalgiafags, they don't really make games anymore.
imagine if Nintendo announced tomorrow that online would be free from now on, including dedicated servers; plus they're adding an overhauled review system, and you can refund any game for any reason if you don't like it after 2 hours. And all their games will have seasonal sales up to 90% off. And you can now run them on custom hardware, including handhelds and PCs. And they'll certify the games work on that hardware, also they coded their own controller compatibility layer to make sure you can use whatever controller you want, and they'll certify that works too. And they're adding a game overlay that works on every title, retroactively. And cloud saves. Oh, and you can turn all this off if you don't want it. And they did all that for free and on top of this, they force devs to lower regional prices across the board.
Imagine the absolute tidal wave of good PR they'd get. Yeah valve already has that by default. Then they get called a monopoly and everyone's baffled they're getting left in the dust, lol

If they buy the studios they get their IP, which they can use to automatically generate AI content later on. In the future MS leadership imagines, original human ideas that existed pre-LLMs are like oil, a limited resource that has to be cornered for later exploitation. Hoarding IP and datasets is what all big tech companies are after now.
