Perfect Dark Reboot primary developer was Santa Monica-based The Initiative. Publicly announced in 2020, but was in development since roughly 2018. California is a very costly state to make games in and this is where Microsoft built up the studio and marketed them as "AAAA". 4 A's. In addition they got Tomb Raider developer Crystal Dynamics to assist in the production of Perfect Dark reboot. After 7 years, multiple delays, the only part of the game that was public was a carefully constructed vertical slice. Who knows if it actually looked like that on actual Xbox Series S hardware.

Vertical slice are like elevator pitches you give to get a game made. A semi playable proof of concept that you can pull it off. And that's all they had after 7 years. With an assist studio of veteran game developers from Crystal Dynamics. The estimated cost is not above Concord, but well within that ballpark figure. At minimum Microsoft Game Studios must've sunk 200-250 million dollars into the Joanna Dark Perfect Dark failed reboot. CHUDS have blood on their hands, developers from Resetera and Reddit are crying on BlueCry as we speak.

>“We’re not in the business of out-consoling Sony or out-consoling Nintendo. There isn’t really a great solution or win for us. I know that will upset a ton of people, but it’s just the truth of the matter. When you’re third place in the console marketplace and the top two players are as strong as they are and, in certain cases, have very discrete focus on doing deals and other things make being on Xbox hard as a team - that’s on us, not on anybody else - ....But we’re not in a position - and I see out there, I see commentary, that if you just build great games everything would turn around. It’s just not true that if we go off and build great games, all of the sudden you’re going to see console shares shift in some dramatic way. We lost the worst generation to lose in the Xbox One generation when everybody built their digital library of games....
>I see a lot of pundits out there that kinda want to go back to the time when we all had cartridges and discs and every new generation was a clean slate and you could switch the whole share. That’s just not the world that we are in today. There’s no world where Starfield is an 11/10 and people start selling their PS5s. That’s not gonna happen.”

After Fable 3 released there was another Fable game for the Kinect. Then Microsoft closed the entire studio. The Fable reboot project has been in pre-productop->development for a period of at least 6-7 years with nothing to show for it, not even 5 minutes of gameplay. When Witcher 3 was announced we got gameplay, we don't even have the tutorial town of Fable reboot in any gameplay slice.

Fable Xbox Series reboot has been unceremoniously delayed from 2025 to undetermined 2026. Reaching closer to a full decade of game development, keep that in the back of your head should they ever show a real gameplay debut.

"This idea that if we just focused more on great games on our console, that somehow we're going to win the console race, I think doesn't relate to the reality of most people. Perfect Dark reboot has been delayed like 3 times already, I know it was supposed to come out last year. And then it's not shipping out this year either, lol.
