Donkey Kong Bananza Previews

>When it was first announced as a post-launch title for Switch 2, there was something of a tempered enthusiasm for Donkey Kong Bananza. Sure, it’s great to see other characters from Nintendo’s portfolio get a big new release, but without a mainline Super Mario or Zelda, the lineup felt lacking. But it’s now clear that Bananza isn’t meant to be some kind of stopgap until the next killer app; it’s a full-on spiritual successor to both Super Mario Odyssey and the DK games of old that aims to elevate the franchise back to the upper echelon of video game royalty.

I just don't really understand why the game looks so muddy if the performance is also bad.

The fact that Nintendo gave 3 areas to explore (monkey level we already know, the giraffe area and the ostrich jungle) makes me think therr will be more than 8 "kingdoms"

The only issue I’m seeing from the gameplay is that the Bananza powers charge back way too quickly.

In almost every clip of the game I’ve seen, the player has been able to entirely recharge their Bananza while it’s active. Given how powerful they are, I can see it breaking a lot of the platforming and destruction challenges. I really feel like the Bananzas should be tools you need to use at strategic times

Nintendo is trying to move DK into the proper mainstream in its lineup. This is pretty ballsy since DK, while popular, is still the relatively niche, much more difficult platformer compared to their flagships. Interesting that they'd sell the console on a relatively untapped IP.

I enjoyed the demo quite a bit. I have more hope for the level design now that I've seen some guardrails applied to the Go Anywhere Break Anything elements.

Not entirely sold on the skill tree stuff but it seems like you can get the game changing abilities like double jumping pretty early

I feel the opposite. I don't want to be pigeon hold into where I should be using it because if I don't save it up from "this" point in the level, I can't use it in "that" point of the level. Better to make it feel like you should be spamming it and let the player decide if they need it or not. You should always want the player to feel like they have control, even if it makes them into an invincible wrecking machine. Even then, stupid usage looks to work against you, since someone almost died to punching stickers when in an enclosed space thanks to the extra reach.

DK has always had the potential to be a big IP. Tropical Freeze just came out at a very bad time and since Retro had to move to Metroid there wasn't a team that could make new games for the monkey.

There are only 2 things holding back my excitement:

In this game it’s a race to the core and you butt heads against Void Co. I have a feeling there is a true final boss, cause the whole thing of “get any wish granted at the core” just reeks of final boss stuff. Whether or not K Rool is involved is TBD.

I for one am glad we're living in an era where new Switch 2 games don't leak a week before release. Unfortunately Metroid Prime 4 will leak early on account of it being a Switch game, but for Switch 2 only games that's not gonna be an issue anymore.
