Go look online. There are countless threads of people who tried to install Spore on their PC from the disc that they bought and couldn’t. You put the disc in the computer, but it stops you from playing the game. In order to play Spore entirely offline, you must first authenticate the game once by connecting to the EA server they set up specifically for that task. Once you authenticate the game you do not need to do that ever again. But if you cannot connect to the server in the first place you can’t play the game. And that’s why there are so many threads of people trying to find a work around because it happened. Look it up yourself.


They released spore years later through various digital stores and that may be what you’re thinking of. If you bought the original physical release of the game at launch you are shit out of luck.

That isn’t the point- it shouldn’t happen to begin with. if you buy a physical copy of a game full price you gave the company your money. They never should require you to connect to a server (which they shut off years later) for the privilege of playing the game you already spent your money on. it isn’t even a “live service” based argument. That’s the opposite of a service. They are purposefully making the usability of their product worse. And part of it is them limiting your ability to install it on multiple machines. It tracks how many machines you used the code on as well. You bought the game. If you replace your computer once or twice or you reinstall the system or get a new hard drive why should that mean you need to buy a second copy? and even if they let you install it on as many machines as you like, if the server goes down you can’t play it anyway. no one should have to download workarounds to use the product they bought. That’s just the company going out of its way to make things less user friendly.


And I only brought the issue up because while it’s only one game this sort of thing has probably happened to hundreds or thousands of games and it’s wasteful. Just leads to more trash in the landfill. But if that means the company gets you to buy the same game a second time and they get even more profits I suppose that is all they care about. What is the law supposed to be written to counteract devs doing that? How would these laws work with games that get Ship of Theseus'd into completely different games over their 10-20 year lifespans like WoW or Guild Wars? WoW is still online so you wouldn't be able to host classic servers, right? Or are devs forced to release each expansion as they become obsolete? What about games that don't have clearly delineated expansions but frequent patches, like PoE or EVE? Do they have to release their game for free every time they release a patch?
